Paperback Journal by Roy S OVER THE RHINE My favorite unknown band since I saw them open up for Adrian Belew in '92, this is Over the Rhine's second major label release, and their third overall. Similar to the Sundays (minus the post-production polish), this disc will sit nicely in your collection nestled between the Cowboy Junkies and pre-Green REM. Lyrics on this offering, as with' Til We Have Faces (1990) and Patience (1993) before it, could almost be mistaken for the poetic drek you (hopefully) shredded after leaving high school - but these words ring true without any sense of cliche in Karin Bergquist's rich voice. Though I find their first IRS release a little better and prefer their first release overall, Eve is a solid effort from a band to watch. |
