| Over the Rhine | Everybody Has A Story... | Press Archive index
. . . Alternative Press, Cleveland OH by Chris Nickson OVER THE RHINE Straight outta Cincinnati, Over the Rhine came fighting that eternal sophomore jinx. The bad news, is that they don't win. The good news is that they come close. Patience, their debut, was a lovely, gauzy offering, placing them between Cowboy Junkies and All About Eve, and sounding, well, not very American. This album has several moments like that-- "Should," "Falling (Death of a Tree)"-- enough to keep you interested and hopeful. Unfortunately, they've discovered the Lead Guitar and the Guitar Solo, which tends to be the kiss of death for most bands. They don't overuse it, to their credit, but the fact that it's there at all, in an attempt to widen their sound, I'm sure, is disconcerting, and transforms them from something very special into something rather generically "alternative". |
