Over The Rhine 1:15 - 2:10

tomorrow afternoon, OtR will be walking onstage @ the legendary "newport folk festival," (arguably) most famous and prestigious ongoing festival in the history of music. afterall, it's the place bob dylan was booed off the stage 43 years ago for “going electric.”

best of luck, break a leg or whatever the appropriate wish would be. i sure wish i was there (as keith is).

there is one helluva line up this year. and obviously from looking at the line up, much has changed there in the 43 years since bob was booed.

Legendary venue, indeed, but the *legend* of BD being booed off the stage is simply legend & not true
Newport 65
Scorcese's No Direction Home docu laid out the facts - in the film there were some...many, in fact, booing, but quite a few in the audience were diggin' the electric stuff.
Now, when Oliver Stone does a Dylan film the facts may change a bit...........

i know, i've got the dylan/newport '65 dvd (thanks kent and sue!). but the electric set was a shocker to the audience, the boos were pretty significant and he did leave the stage after a couple of songs tho. and yeah, he did return and do an acoustic song after things calmed down. but why let the truth get in the way of of a great story, huh? wink.gif

(and was it exactly what he was hoping for? yeah, i think so. he actually seemed to be enjoying the response a bit. afterall, such are the stories of which legends are made. 40+ years later, we're still talking about it.)

Ohio representin' @ 1:15.

Hawaii representin' @ 2:30.

The Joe's Pub shows in New York last April... Jake Shimabukuro played there the night before OtR's dates.
Now they're *this close* playing at the same place at almost the same time.
'Tis a sign, my friends, 'tis a sign....

Our states are submitting to A Force beyond reason, Karin & Linford. Pay attention to this, you must.

I didn't get to see Jake Shimabukuro's performance since Gillian Welch and David Rawlings were playing a fabulous set at the same time, but he did join the Levon Helm band (along with Gillian & David) for their encore and played a killer ukelele solo on The Weight. I'm sure Karin had a big smile on her face for that song!

Levon and his unreal 11-piece band were the high point of the festival for me, but Over the Rhine also did an inspired set this afternoon and were obviously very happy to be playing at Newport. The crowd was modest but very enthusiastic, and I think they made quite a few new fans! Nice to talk to Karin, Jake and Juicy before the show.

The set list (in Linford's by now familiar shorthand):

Waste
Born
Trouble
Roll
Trumpet
Kiddin'
Ohio
B.P.D.
Tom
President

A spokesperson for WFUV said all the festival's performances will be archived on NPR. smile.gif

Two shows tomorrow at The Living Room in NYC!

*sigh*
Trust me, you're not the only one (tho' the reasons are a bit more convoluted than I'll go into here).
Ah well...

I'm transcribing a post my pal Adriana made to the Cowboy Junkies board early this morning, below. She got some nice photos of the OtR show.

I've uploaded photos from the festival. Here's the flickr link:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/10027293@N02/...57606532960237/

Here are the acts I caught:

Saturday -

Cowboy Junkies (opening act for the main stage!) - only a few photos. I got the "ok" nod to enter the photographers' lane for the first song (Miles From Our Home) and took a few quick shots with my little Canon. They closed the lane right after that, so I was lucky to get these. I stayed up front for the whole show and loved every minute of it. It was my only CJ show this year.

Richie Havens - no photos, sorry. I stayed and enjoyed the timeless wonder for a few songs, but having just seen him in 2006 I wanted to catch a few other acts, especially...

Jakob Dylan - only one distant zoomed-up photo. Really nice show (though the bass was too boomy at this stage), and I thought it was great that he played the festival his dad had played.

Steve Earle & Allison Moorer - a few photos of a good show.

Trey Anastasio - no photos. Crowd was into him; I wasn't convinced.

Stephen & Damian Marley - damn. They sounded great but the skies opened up and we were soaked to the bone. Obviously, no photos to share. I'm just glad the camera stayed dry(ish) in my bag.

Major disappointment that we couldn't stay for the afternoon acts of The Black Crowes and Cat Power.

Consolation: after hot showers... nice dinner with margaritas, and then "on to the pub!" for the Guinness(es) that both Nicole (friend of Keith) and I knew would make everything better. Note: I drink them; Nicole kisses them first. Very Happy

Sunday -

Brian Fitzsimmons - two photos. Boston folk singer/songwriter friend of Nicole's. Really nice energy.

The Honors - coupla photos to share of this Boston group that rocked the stage. We staked out great seats intially because the next act was Over the Rhine, but I'm glad we caught these boys.

Over the Rhine - lotsa photos since the seats were great. OMG - Karin sang the PERFECT Trumpet Child this show. Perfect.

Kaki King - two photos of her first number. Cool neck playing, but I tired of her sound after the first few songs and decided it was time to get back to the big stage at the beach.

Aaaahhh... it was such a beautiful day, too! Sunny and warm.

Gillian Welch - sorry, Gillian fans. She's ok but I was bored.

Or maybe I was just anxious for the final act of my day...

LEVON HELM - what a treat. Couple of photos for you too (from a distance). But not of me dancing, which I did for his whole show. I don't know how you can sit through that music!

She did in fact dance with my sister's friend Maria during Levon's entire set (I constrained myself to bouncing in my chair with my binoculars). In Gillian Welch's defense, she & David Rawlings turned in an amazing performance that I found anything but boring.

I listened to the npr.org stream and enjoyed Gil and Dave's set. they played some songs I hadn't heard before! I stuck around to listen to Levon Helm because I heard Gillian was going to join him on a song, but I didn't care for his music. too much going on for my taste I guess. didn't stick around for Trey's set (which was recorded the day before but streamed later). too many annoying Trey fans in the chatroom chanting his name and expressing boredom with Gil and Dave. :PPPPP

hoping to see OtR's set archived on the npr site!

Hey All.

My friend, Brian, asked for glimpse of what we experienced at the Newport Folk Festival yesterday. This is just me shining a tiny little light on it, but I thought I'd start with the best and the last and let you all share in a very beautiful memory...

You mean besides the fact that we just played the freakin' Newport Folk Festival?! smile.gif

Well for starters... Levon Helm- I asked Linford if it was ok that I still had a crush on Levon and thankfully he said yeah, it was ok. Levon sounded better than ever. Solid deep warm grooves. Swampy and soulfully southern. His voice slightly more grainy and weathered, even more endearing. His smile- a million dollar smile full of joy. Absolutely infectious. He surrounded himself with fellow musicians that complemented his style and sensibilities and shared the spotlight with his daughter among other vocalists, guitar, keys, violin, upright bass and horns. It seemed to be more about creating a space where others could share in the joy of music. There was no sense of Ego with Levon Helm. It was more about the music and the celebration of life - like a precious gift or a secret that he was now privy to.

I had a strange sad feeling come over me that this could be the last time I might see Levon Helm perform live. And then his smile lit up the stage and I was caught up again in the revelry that was exuding from him and could not help but to live in the moment. What a high.

They ended the set joined by David Rawlings & Gillian Welch and others as The Weight rang out over the lawn and across the bay.

More soon. I gotta get some sleep - we have a double header in NYC tomorrow. smile.gif And I'm lovin' every minute of this.

Peace.
