Dear OtR:

Could we please have an update on this project? I have to admit, I am starting to get frustrated. I understand why everything got delayed, but the last update I received in my inbox or could find posted by the band on this website is April 30th telling us the end of June. It is now Mid July and I haven't found anything other than "coming soon."

Thanks,
Seth

Dear Seth,
I understand your frustration completely and am so sorry for that.
The project has been mixed and mastered and is currently at the manufacturers. We truly hope it will be in our hands and yours shortly. Thanks for your patience.
Look for a more complete update from Linford soon.

Hey, look at it like this. Your $15 is safer with OTR, than with IndyMac! smile.gif

Found my copy in the mailbox when I got home today. I ordered it so long ago I couldn't even remember if I ordered it or not.

What a nice finish to an otherwise crapulent day.

I was completely surprised when I discovered my copy in today's mail... Great surprise, though, because it sounds awesome!

Wow, I've never gotten one sealed before. I almost don't want to open it up... Nahhh! tongue.gif And wow, what a gift inside. Wow. Thank you Linford and Karin. It means so much. wub.gif You guys rock the Casbah!

I believe Mark was referring to listening to the music (gift) after breaking the seal (inside).
ShaneBertou
Got mine yesterday as well. "Later Days" is ... wow.

The "gift" inside was a ticket to an exclusive acoustic performance in December. Planning the road trip already.
Hunter
Yeah, I got mine yesterday, as well! "Latter Days" is, indeed, wonderful! Great album, and I _love_ the cover art and design. I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it to the Christmas concert in Ohio, but I want to go... I just wish it wasn't an 8 hour drive from Virginia. tongue.gif

Well, there really was more than one gift, but I was referring to the free ticket to St. Elizabeth's. Should be interesting to see what the turn out is like this year, now with all these tickets floating around in the world. wink.gif

The 1, 2 punch of Snow Angel and Latter Days leaves me speechless. Definitely the highlight for me so far.

LFNV3 trumped Olympics. =) I LOVE it. Especially "Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child"
Beautifully done!!!

Latter Days is love.
And I do believe I have a new favorite version of Drunkard's Prayer.

Now if only I can convince my girlfriend that driving from Charlotte to Cincinnati around Christmas time is a good idea.

At first (okay second) listen:

Wow. Listening to this CD reminds me of the arc of the grieving process. With Motherless Child, and Angel Band opening the CD and Snow Angel and Latter Days closing it, the disc does a pretty amazing job of capturing a somber poignancy like no other Over the Rhine recording has before. Especially after reading the liner notes and realizing the weight of Angel Band, these four songs bookending the other six or so more upbeat and happy tracks really seem to capture the full-on gamut of the bereavement process--loss, celebration, and acceptance. Maybe it's because we just lost my wife's grandfather this week, and having just witnessed all the pain of that situation wrapped up in the joyful and melancholy celebration of a life well lived, that this CD evokes such strong feelings in me. Either way, this is a beautiful and important piece of Over the Rhine's recorded history. All the songs are gorgeous. Dave did a masterful job of mixing the record, and managed to make Karin sound even more beautiful than I expected she would. Listening to this disc reminds me of the best of both Over the Rhines--the old early nineties urgency of a young band with boundaries yet to be discovered, and the mature, fully accomplished sound of Karin and Linford from the past six or seven years. It truly is an amazing feat to have accomplished, but they did it. Kudos and Congratulations! And here's to having Juicy mix the next studio release. smile.gif

It was worth the wait.

Maybe I missed this somewhere, but what is Angel Band?

I cant stop listening to this. Cannot stop! I LOVE, during Hush Now, after the musical interlude, when Karin resumes singing, you can hear the smile and joy in her voice. I love it. Angel Band is probably my favorite on the CD right now.

Karin and Linford. Thank you again for another masterpiece.

Juicy. Thank you for helping create the masterpiece. Best! Soundman! Ever!

just keepin' it real, y'all.

Maybe I missed this somewhere, but what is Angel Band?

Best I can tell, Angel Band was written by the Stanley Brothers (aka, the men of Constant Sorrow.) The song is track #19 on the O,Brother soundtrack.

Also... performed by the Grateful Dead in 1973.

Also beautifully done by Emmylou Harris on her 1987 release.

But of course, most masterfully done by OTR on LFNW V3. You can hear it on my Muxtape.

I didn't know that Emmylou did Angel Band. I thought I could hear her harmonizing on the song. It is beautiful. I am obsessed with the song?

Yeah, I'm actually crunching the numbers and dates now. We're in the same town and I agree the trip is usually too long for me, but I've always wanted to see an OTR Holiday show... and I think this is just the motivation needed to head up for one.. or two since they're back to back HEE HEE

Got mine last week Wednesday or Thursday, and it is indeed as lovely as everyone has described it, and a fantastic addition to the "Live from Nowhere" series.

Since it came with a free admission ticket to the St. Elizabethshow, I am wondering whether there will be a Volume 4 next year. Surely I am not the only one that each volums is taking longer and loner to get done. Maybe Karin and Linford should take a year off.

Or maybe they are working on the definitive "Over the Rhine 1989-2009" 4 CD box set that has been rumored on and off! wink.gif

Meanwhile, my deepest thanks to Karin and Linford for this latest absolutely delightful addition to the OtR catalog.

i think the delay on this one was simply due to the fact that they went on an extended road trip much earlier this year than they usually do (both solo and w/ani, which i don't think was scheduled when the original target release date was planned) and then the unexpected passing of linford's father. which i think kind of took the breath out of them and (imho) they wisely and understandably put business on hold for a while and retreated to the farm to try to recover and heal.

from what i understand the free ticket to st. e's was simply a "thank you" in appreciation for everyone being so patient and understanding for the delays. not really sure how or why that would equate to them suspending the "live from nowhere" project in the future and/or them needing to "take a year off."

and iirc, i think last year's LFN got into everyone's hands faster than the first two did, and vol 2 was on schedule, other than the unavoidable delay this year and the longer than expected roll-out the first year (both understandable imho), i think vols 2 & 3 were pretty much delivered as planned.

that doesn't really seem "longer and longer" to me. just sayin'...

Well, I can't speak for anyone else but me, but nothing like that has crossed my mind. In fact quite the opposite has been in my mind. I've felt so bad for them--especially Linford. I've prayed and sent what little encouragement to them I could via Bill. I can't even imagine how hard it must be to lose a parent at all, but then add to that the strain of the circumstances (Ani Difranco tour) and the effects must have been devastating. And again, speaking personally, I really think of these LFN projects as just a bit of extra music that I'm happy to receive (whenever I receive them). Excellent quality live music from one of your favorite bands is never a bad thing, IMO.

The album sounds great, like its two predecessors. I agree Juicy did a great job with the mix (no surprise). Angel Band and that hilarious gypsy arrangement of Hush Now alone would have been reason enough for me to buy this CD!

I'm not an especially sentimental person, but I was only a few bars into Snow Angel before I got completely teary-eyed.

Glad I ordered an extra copy to give my sister the new OtR fan! smile.gif

Just got my copy today. Looking forward to getting into it. I love that I didn't get a notice that it had shipped, it just showed up in my mailbox as a surprise.

On the liner notes it says go to overtherhine.com for "additional notes and credits". I assume that is the Music link in the navigation, but I don't see this album there. They must still be working on that. Unless someone knows somewhere else on the site that this information is...
lilblueriver
Karin's little quip about liking a 5 o'clock shadow on a man before "Trouble" is something she said at the September concert here in LA. I am dying to know if bits of that show really are on the album! Mostly because I dragged my 9-month-pregnant-bum to a standing-room-only show in the hopes of imbibing baby with some pre-natal beauty. And it paid off.

What an exquisite show, and Lena definitely seemed to want to come experience such a world in person... I think Karin should know her voice helps babies be born.

I don't think I will ever get sick of Motherless Child - my favorite track on Vol. III
Angel Band is pretty beautiful too.

Love love love I'm On A Roll, and Latter Days too.

I would've traded Drunkard's Prayer for a live version of The Trumpet Child if I coulda - and I state that with no ungratefulness, these Live From Nowhere's are the best thing anywhere.
