QUOTE
By the Book: Karin Bergquist
The best in their field talk about the books the have influenced their careers.

As the unmistakable voice and co-founding member of the band known as Over the Rhine, Karin Bergquist has been wholly devoted to her critically-acclaimed creative endeavor since it’s inception in 1989. Ms. Bergquist and her husband/partner Linford Detweiler have perpetuated Over the Rhine’s career with an impressive catalog of songs that celebrate American music in richly imaginative ways. The duo was recently included in PASTE Magazine’s list of 100 Best Living Songwriters, a humbling and generous accolade that Ms. Bergquist is determined to live up to.

Over the Rhine has released eighteen recordings in it’s nearly 20 year history, repeatedly toured the U.S. and Europe and enjoyed success in markets as far away as New Zealand, where its 2005 release, Drunkard’s Prayer, reached the top ten.

In an industry with an uncertain future, Karin and her partner Linford Detweiler decided recently to forego offers from already established record labels and instead started their own imprint, GSD – Great Speckled Dog Records. Their instincts have paid off as their business experienced a 60% growth in 2007 alone with the release of their latest project, The Trumpet Child. Over the Rhine’s following continues to grow around the world.

Both Karin and Linford count among their inspirations fiction writers, essayists and poets, so it follows that Karin Bergquist would be included in this year’s By the Book series.

When they are not touring, Karin and Linford reside east of Cincinnati on their small farm with their beloved Great Dane (Elroy) and Weimaraner (Shakey Jake).

Makes me wish I worked downtown ... I'd definitely hit this.

Someone should tape it... and then transcribe it... and then publish it... and then we would all have it... smile.gif

Thanks for the heads-up!

If no one else is planning on going/reporting, I could likely. Although it's commonly known that "books will rot your brains" (sorry, Jeanne), perhaps something great will be said.

You could find out which book inspired Poughkeepsie, then go buy it and burn it!

I would love to be there for this, but I'm working and can't get Wednesday off with such short notice. Go, Bruce and report, even at the risk of the dreaded brain rot. laugh.gif

I wish someone would record it, but I'm not going to hold my breath for that...

I'm with DustyVolume on this. PLEASE someone record and share!
I actually wrote to the library, and it sounds like they will record it IF Karin gives them permission to... so Karin our dear Karin PLEASE, when someone asks you if they can record your session, say "why, yes, of course you can!" That would be swell...

It's a rough day here in the 'nati, folks. Not sure I can make it down. Anyone else heading down? And will record it?!?

I'd be doing the speaker a huge injustice by *reviewing* today's program....never in a million years. I hope the Mercantile indeed recorded & that Karin would make it available if she feels comfortable with it. Suffice it to say- as much as I've been moved & thoroughly enjoyed OTR concerts over the years, I don't ever remember welling-up with tears at one.
You go girl

You probably haven't had to sit through Little Blue River then!

ba-dum-dum!

But seriously, more details, man.

the library just wrote me back and said they did not record it. mad.gif
I do hope somebody comes through on a recording or notes or something. anyone? anyone? Karin? anyone?...

Allowances must be made for the camerawork, of course:

Karin spoke of poetry, fiction, memoirs, family, brokenness, faith, and human connection for approximately 35 lightning-paced minutes, throughout which she was shining (a lamp illuminated her papers, heh) and on. Linford sat among the audience of supporters and admirers; this cheered me at the beginning, not least because his fantastic choice of shirt, but I then promptly forgot his presence once Karin took to the stage. laugh.gif Having been summoned to return to the lectern, she joked she was ignorant of how encores worked in this setting. (The answer? Q & A.) Being rather lousy at the guess-the-number-of-jellybeans-in-a-jar game, I suggest you +/- 10 to my visually calculated conclusion that 40-50 were in attendance--I noticed library staff add at least two rows of chairs to the prearranged number. It is for Karin to judge, but I think the event a success: I stepped onto Walnut Street feeling full as I eagerly trekked to the public library and Ohio Bookstore.

Although no recording was made out of respect for the artist's wishes, I am excited about the reason given for her gracious declination.

More details about the event forthcoming. Gosh, did I take notes -- now I need only find time to sensibly transcribe!

Wow, great pictures. There is something so powerful (and hot) in those photgraphs (especially the first one). wink.gif I can't wait for the details!!!!

And Hey, I have that exact same lamp. I use it all the time! smile.gif
Brookd
Thank you Kaputt! great pix (my jealousy now overfloweth). Looking forward to the more detailed account after interpretation and transcription of your notes has taken place... That just sounds like it was a perfect way to spend a lunch hour.

man, Karin didn't want to be recorded?? what happened to the good old days when she used to talk about bootlegs being healthy and encouraged them? I guess now that they're filthy rich and uber-famous they've sold out to The Man! laugh.gif I guess I've been following their bookish ways long enough to have a rough idea of what she said (Rilke), but still...

maybe she'll turn this into an essay for a magazine or something like that.
Euphrates
That'll teach me to check the Orchard more often...*sigh* I heard about it too late (like the day after), and believe me - we would have been there.

*sigh*
