I wonder if it will be the current touring lineup or if Devon or Matt will show up to reprise their parts on the Ohio tour, for authenticity's sake. That would be pretty bad-ass. (no offense to Mickey, he's a phenomenal drummer, but I wonder if they'll try to get people involved in the original album and tour for this show)
bivester
Apr 6 2008, 04:38 PM
my guess is that it'll be the current line-up w/jake and mickey. devon has moved to LA and is staying pretty busy with the evan dando/lemonheads thing. and i, for one, would be pretty surprised to see paul moak rearing his dreadlocked head w/OtR again anytime soon, i don't know what will sayles (the original "ohio" tour drummer) is up to.
fwiw, matt slocum didn't play on the record or the original tour, he joined the "ohio" tour after it restarted, so he had no part in the record or the "original" tour line-up. plus, i think i read something somewhere about a sixpence reunion.
so for "authenticity's sake" as you put it, devon (he did play on some cuts on "ohio" but i believe will was the primary session drummer) and/or matt wouldn't be a huge factor.
WalrusOct9
Apr 6 2008, 04:50 PM
Yeah, I guess I was just thinking of the Changes Come record...I have real mixed feelings about Moak's guitar playing on it, but I love the
sound of that band...Jake and Mickey are phenomenal musicians but I hope they consider adding a full-time guitarist at least for this show to really do the stuff justice. The one show I saw with the 5 man lineup in '04 was the best OTR show I've ever been to, hands down. There was this fairly massive-sounding band to back such a massive-sounding singer, and it was fun to hear Karin go balls-out (hypothetically) for an entire show.
Sixpence had one hit (which is the bane of my existance since i've had to play it in a cover band...ugh)...Slocum could skip out for a few days to play this show, I really liked him when I saw him with OTR. Just sayin'.

Will Sayles is playing in the re-united Sixpence None the Richer with Matt Slocum.
The whole thing sounds like a great opportunity to have a host of special guests, known and unknown, join them on stage. I do hope a recording, official or not, surfaces from this.

The Yes tickets for good seats here are
$141?!?! Really, it's an outdoor place, so if you're not in the first 20 or so rows, the sound is going to be awful, but man...that's absurd. I was in the 10th row for the 2004 tour for about $60 (including no ticketmaster fees)...I love that band, but not that much. Yikes. Are you possibly taping? I'm curious how they're going to sound...dudes are getting OLD. Although I think eventually Howe will be replaced with one if his kids, and Jon with his daughter, and the transition to Mini-Yes will be virtually complete.

Their myspace site shows new dates and they even have a demo music clip up on the site right now. Leigh Nash mentioned that she and Matt are working together on her myspace site. The band is confirmed on the band list for Cornerstone Festival and they've already played a show at 3rd and Lindsley. I heard from second-hand sources that Cason Cooley and Will Sayles will be touring with them. So, I'd say it's past the rumor stage at this point, which is pretty exciting.

i haven't seen/heard any info on pricing but based on the website and riverbend's traditional pricing, i'm guessing that this will not be a "cheap" show to attend. and i would bet the "good seats" are gone pretty fast due to "VIP Seating" ($995 Membership Fee, plus individual ticket price), "Gold season tickets" ($2,500 per seat Price Level 1) "VIP suites" (6 seat box $12,750 - $15,000) and traditional "season ticket" holders. in other words, i'll be surprised if this is a $15-25 ticket as most OtR shows are.
that being said, this does not appear to be your traditional "outdoor place" or "shed" and with it being a second home to the cincinnati symphony, i would guess they have the sound issues/concerns covered.
and fwiw,
"lucky" would
not be the word i would use if i had to sit thru sixpence (or any other band for that matter) play an entire album as the opener before the featured act, "Over the Rhine" came out to do their set. personally, i'd be fine if they skipped the opener or if there is one, that it an
extremely short set.

Hopefully with it being a smaller-than-typical outdoor it will be pretty decent. Maybe since it's the inaugural show and not yet officially on the schedule it will be free, right?

sorry if that came off as harsh towards sixpence, it was not my intent. what i meant was that this is an "OtR" show/event and that (imho) something of that nature, or a long, extended set from
any opener (as i clearly said, SNTR or "any other band") would distract from this as a special "OtR event," which i think, it is intended to be. that is all, nothing more, nothing less.
personally, i'm thrilled & satisfied to see four of my favorite musicians play 21 songs from one of my favorite records of all time, in sequence, at a nice shiny new venue. and if that's exactly what i get, with absolutely nothing else (well, maybe that and an overpriced glass of wine or two) i'll walk out of the place with a big smile on my face.

I don't mind openers, so long as they don't involve me having to listen to "Kiss Me."
And Bill, your post is why I haven't been to an amphitheater show in years. Hopefully this one won't be like most places with the first 20+ rows being season ticket holders and rich people, most of whom probably haven't even heard of OTR...
I was referring to the venue Yes is playing in Chicago, which is the usual crap-tastic 'shed', I don't know about the OTR venue...hopefully the sound will be a bit better cause it's smaller.
QUOTE
in other words, i'll be surprised if this is a $15-25 ticket as most OtR shows are.
At the same time, OTR playing a venue 3 or 4 times as large as they usually do with a higher ticket price...i know promoters are greedy but hopefully they'll realize that probably won't work. OTR could fill a tiny venue with diehards at a premium price but a big show like that needs a lot of more casual fans to fill it. 4,100 tickets is a lot of arses in the seats.
I checked ticketbastard, the Raconteurs top out at around $31, so it's possible this still might be an affordable show. Remember, it's not about what we would pay for a show like that, its what the people in the other 3,900 or so seats would pay. It'd be pretty amazing to see OTR do this show and fill the place (so long as we weren't behind 20 rows of bored VIP's :rolleyes)

No, Riverbend won't be in the $15-25 range, not likely. But actually, it's well worth it - it's one of the absolute premier concert venues in this town. I saw my first "real" concert ever (Melissa Etheridge) there, and have since seen a number of shows...even if you're on the lawn, it rocks. Honestly.
(silly side note - the first time I heard the song Ohio, I assumed Karin was doing a play on the name of the concert venue when she sang the words "where the river bends"...)
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make this one even if it *is* local and well worth it - I have a gig of my own that weekend in French Lick, Indiana and since I'm presenting there's not a lot of options, not without way too much driving back and forth. Ah well...
