First concert of 2008, and my sister Kim and I started on a high note: John Prine played over 2 and a half hours at Carnegie Hall tonight, with surprise guest Iris DeMent joining him for four duets in the middle of the show (including In Spite Of Ourselves) and also singing Unwed Fathers and Muehlenburg County with him for the encore. smile.gif

It was Iris's birthday, and they thoroughly embarrassed her by bringing out a cake in front of the 2800 delighted fans at the sold out show. John's guitarist Jason Wilber played brilliantly, as usual.

2/2 Ellis Paul "Kids Show" Jammin' Java

Sure Reese will only be 12 weeks old, but I want to be sure that when asked what her first concert was that she doesn't have to say, The Wiggles, Hannah Montana or Michael W. Smith. dry.gif

oh, nice. i'd definitely like to hear about that show.

I saw Cat Power at the Starlight Ballroom in Philadelphia last night with Carolyn, Jimbo and my pal Rhonda.

I thoroughly enjoyed the company, but the show was pretty much a disaster. Like the last time I saw Chan with the Memphis Rhythm Band at Irving Plaza, her vocals were mixed way too low and with the exception of a few of the quieter songs we could barely hear her singing over the band (who were quite good, but not the reason I took a day off to travel to Philly). She didn't do an acoustic interlude playing guitar or piano but just fronted the band all night, which was a bit of a disappointment. The stage lighting at the club also sucked, so besides not being able to hear Chan I could barely see her. To top it off we had a bunch of disinterested yahoos in the booth behind us who insisted on talking loudly until Jim asked them to lower their voices, and of course they took offense at this and berated him before they left.

No doubt this one will be pretty close to the bottom of my 2008 Favorite Concerts list! Hope y'all have much better luck with her midwest shows.
kylie jo
That's the pits, keith.

I just thought I'd add we saw Brandon Dawson at a cafe the other nite.. he is so talented and I can't wait to hear his album. Which he said will be out in June. (It's 2 songs and the price is 54 dollars. lol. j/k.)

That's too bad, Keith. I hope she does alright up here Monday, although I am a little leery about it all.
It will be interesting to hear what Bill will have to say about the Chicago show tonight.

Sue and I took a drive into southern Minnesota tonight to the small town of Zumbrota, MN.
Carrie Rodriguez was playing there at a former Carnegie library that was built in 1906.
It is now an art gallery/perfoming arts center, called Crossings at Carnegie and even has a full pottery studio downstairs.
It really is a beautiful place and made for a wonderful, very intimate setting for music. In a room, that was maybe 40 ft by 40 ft, surrounded by all this artwork, we sat on chairs set around a slightly raised small stage. There were maybe 75 people there tops, and the place was pretty much full, mostly of locals of all ages. In typical Minnesota nice tradition, we were made to feel like it was home. It really did feel like you were sitting in a living room, it was that intimate.
This was the first stop on Carries tour, and she brought along her bass player and guitarist who have been with her for a while and a drummer. And they went on to play an absolutely incredible 2 set show. The band was truly enjoying themselves in this small setting.
Carrie had been hanging in Minneapolis this past fall, working with Gary Louris of Jayhawks fame. I think she said he was producing her new album, which is slated for August release (confirmed by Carrie). This past fall they spent time writing songs together.
Some of which she played tonight, and were really, really good. You could feel Gary Louris' presence in the music. I've always liked his songs in the Jayhawks the best (plus he has a new album out 2/19 I believe). Afterwards she stayed out and did a prolonged meet and greet.
Carrie is one wonderful lady.
What a show, check her out if she comes your way.

A concert I'll never forget - last night Cincinnati Symph w/ John Adams conducting his pulitzer prize-winning piece, On The Transmigration Of Souls, written for the 1st anniv of the 911 attacks for the New York Phil. Words cannot describe.
That along with another of his works, a Violin piece, The Dharma At Big Sur, played on 6 string electric violin by Leila Josefowitz.....a mighty cool woman...and helluva player. There are interviews I did, along with my buddy, Mark, with both John Adams & Leila right here

Friday 2/22 Sue and I went into St. Paul to see the Wailin' Jennys.
They were at The O' Shaughnessy on the campus of St. Catherine's.
Some of you may be familiar with them as they have previously have almost been a 'house'
band on The Prairie Home Companion.
Starting out as Ruth Moody, Nicky Mehti and Cara Luft, they began as what was to be a just a one-time get together
for their first album 40 Days. Hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba they would play in coffeehouses up there. Cara left soon after to persue a solo career, and Annabelle Chvostek replaced her as a member for the wonderful album Firecracker. After that album was released Annabelle too left to persue a solo career to be replaced by Heather Masse. She is from the east coast of the US, known as a member of the Wayfaring Strangers and the Brooklyn based Heather and the Barbarians. The Jennys combine beautiful instrumentation with wonderful rich vocal harmonies. Ruth is soprano (and plays banjo, accordian, and guitar) Heather is the alto (and plays upright bass), and Nicky is the messo (playing guitar and a small drum set). Their evening consisted of 2 beautiful 45 minute sets, and included a 4th member, a guy whose name I can't remember on fiddle. They also did a couple of songs acapella.
Just a nice evening of contemporary folk music. I really like the way Heather has added to the band, with her real strong vocals.
Sue totally enjoyed the show, as did I. Afterwards they came out into the lobby and signed cd's and photos for everyone who wanted one.
If you get a chance to see them- do go. And I recommend their Firecracker CD from 2006.
They will appear on Prairie Home Companion on 3/1.

Sue and I are going to see Boston singer-songwriter Edie Carey (one of my favorite new discoveries last year)
at a house concert on 3/20 in Minneapolis. First time ever at a house concert, sounds like a fun and intimate setting.
Funny thing, I was PMing with Keith last night about her, to see if he ever saw her before, while the same time I'm e-mailing
the hosts, and it turns out the host is Gillian- Keith's Pattypal friend from up here. It's a small world after all. smile.gif

Plus we are going to see Ellery at a house show in a cafe in Minneapolis on 4/6 in the afternoon,
then go right from there to see Tift Merritt at the Cedar that night. Now that's going to be one fun Sunday.

I kinda wish I had planned a trip home to Detroit for Krauss & Plant -- the Fox is such a great place to see a show.(I've seen Dido there once, and Tori Amos last year)

Hey Bill - you wouldn't know of anyone with a spare ticket for the New Harmony show would you? I've been wanting to see a show at the granary and this is the 1st I've heard of it, but the show's sold out. Drat!

For anyone in the Cincinnati area....this Friday, 3/21, Mieka Pauley , a damn fine singer-writer from New England will be doing what she does best in Kim Taylor's Pleasant Perk at Ridge & Montgomery in Cincinnati's Pleasant Ridge area.
6 pm is when we expect to get going. It's a free show....and a tip basket will be passed
Would love for you to be there. It's a small, intimate venue.....with great coffee stuffs

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss April 20th
Griffin House w/ Sons of William April 24th (The Dame)
Over The Rhine April 26th (CST)
Tom Petty Jul 8th (Riverbend)
Over The Rhine July 23rd (Fraze)

So I wonder if we can get an OtR appearance at the Dame before the Dame is ultimately forced to close its doors.
