5 sleeps.

A quick check on ticket availibility shows that the top 10-11 rows of the balcany still are available. Hopefully there willbe a lot of 'last minute' deciders and walk-ups. (I seem to recall that last year OtR sold out the Taft, the first time in several years.)

I seem to remember that they've only sold out the Taft once or twice the whole time they've been doing it. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I know it's been the the exception, rather than the rule.

I'm hoping I'll be able to make it; the Cincinnati forecast seems to be tending toward more rain right now, but Dayton's still expecting a lot of sleet & freezing rain. Crossing my fingers. smile.gif

Sigh.

This is the current Dayton weather forecast:

Statement as of 4:41 PM EST on December 14, 2007

... Winter Storm Warning in effect from 6 am Saturday to 12 PM EST
Sunday...

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a Winter
Storm Warning... which is in effect from 6 am Saturday to 12 PM
EST Sunday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

Snow will develop across the area Saturday morning. The snow will
mix with sleet and freezing rain at times... particularly Saturday
afternoon and evening. The precipitation will then change over to
all snow after midnight. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 8 inches
are expected through Sunday morning. Some ice accumulation of one
to two tenths of an inch are possible. With gusty winds near 40
mph... areas of blowing snow will occur Sunday.

Heavy snow and... or ice is forecast to accumulate in the warned
area causing hazardous driving conditions. Those with travel
plans in the warned area are advised to choose an alternate
Route... or should use extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.

Remember... a Winter Storm Warning means severe winter weather
conditions are imminent or highly likely.

This is the current Cincinnati forecast:

Statement as of 4:41 PM EST on December 14, 2007

... Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 6 am to 6 PM EST
Saturday...

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory... which is in effect from 6 am to 6 PM EST
Saturday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

A mixture of snow... sleet and freezing rain will develop across
the area Saturday morning. Temperatures will warm to just above
freezing Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening. This will allow
for a gradual changeover to rain. Total snow accumulations of 1
to 2 inches are expected by Saturday afternoon. Ice accumulations
will be less than a tenth of an inch.

A Winter Weather Advisory is issued when a wintry mix of
precipitation is forecast to develop in the affected areas, but
accumulations are expected to be light. Any snow or ice would
make driving and walking difficult but not impossible on
untreated roadways and sidewalks. When temperatures are below
freezing, motorists need to be especially careful on bridges and
overpasses where slippery spots can easily develop.

------------------------------------------------------------

I won't be making a final decision on whether or not I'll attempt the drive until early tomorrow afternoon, but if the Dayton forecast is pretty accurate, I suspect I'll be missing at least Saturday's show, if not both shows. And I won't be very happy about it, either. mad.gif

I made it to Cincy.
This year, I flew on good old Delta. No driving for me, not if I wanted to go to St E's show.

So, Im here and looking forward to the show. Bad thing, after having my tickets for well over a month now I discover that we are way on the right side :-( Very disappointing. I thought we would be in with the rest of the Orchard. So sad. I hope I can get some decent photos from where I will be sitting. Maybe with luck I can move over to the center at some point during the show.

See you all tomorrow night!!

Hej, Justina, will you be smuggling in your tripod again this year? I want to try mine, but it's huge (72 incher) and we're on the front row, so no one to hide it behind. Plus, I guess that's too close for good a good shot anyway. Oh well.

Yep... I packed my tripod in my suitcase and I will be bringing it. Mine is compact... probably about 1' in length when collapsed. I'll just sling it over my shoulder and away I go.
looking forward to seeing you there, Mark!

Oh there's snow out there.

And Yahoo says crap will continue to fall from the sky all day.
Like Bill said, Screw this wintry mix.
Some ways its only fair, as I've yet to have to drive through this stuff to make it to a winter show this tour, and this year, I've a whole let less to drive.
(First Taft Show as a local!).
I'm think of you Apples out there, and the road dogs coming in. May the trials to this adventure be no more serious than amusing. May some of you find a moment to pop into Kaldis for coffee or toddy to warm you. A moment to enjoy the city that's given me back some of the taste for this state I've lost over the last couple of years. Our phone's rattling off the hook with folks calling to wish Euphrates a happy birthday, and we're awaiting the skinny dog to bring us our girlfriend. From there the 3 of us will see you at Arnolds, and of course, the shows.

Yes Virginia, the world's still not perfect, but I still feel more than a little blessed.
Hope you do too.
and Hope to see you all soon.

Well, we have two inches of heavy snow on the ground and it's sleeting quite earnestly here. I really don't feel comfortable driving down to Cincinnati alone in a 15-year-old car in these conditions. I shall now refer to Mother Nature as the grinch who stole my Christmas concert. dry.gif

I know it's going to be a great show, and I'm sorry I'm going to miss Trudes & Kent and Sue (in particular) and the rest of you as well. If I'm lucky, maybe traffic conditions will improve enough for me to make it to St. E's tomorrow.

Justina, if you're looking for an empty seat to photograph from (if you're reading this soon enough), Pit, Row 2, Seat 18 will be empty. I hope you guys get some good shots.

Looks like it's going to stay mostly rain in Cincinnati, but it's still sleeting up here and we're under a Winter Storm Warning until noon tomorrow. Our sleet is supposed to change back to snow again sometime overnight with total accumulation of 4-6 inches. So it's probably best if I just stay home tonight. Yes, I'm a Winter driving wimp, but I really don't want to risk it tonight. Of all the days of the year, it has to be this one.. rolleyes.gif

It was a really good show. Remarkably similar to last year's Taft but that's not that bad of a thing.

For me the highlights were again probably Trumpet Child and Nothing Is Innocent, the latter of which Karin was trying to convince people it would be ok to dance in the aisles to... (?!?)

My date was reasonably well behaved and was only asked to quiet down once. Michelle Shocked certainly wasn't my cup of tea but it did make for an interesting 20 minutes of trying to recall the name of the opener at Moonlight Gardens that wasn't our thing either. It finally came: Ticklepenny Corner. Yipes.

Hehe. Now that Jeanne reminded me of the name, I had to see what the Enquirer's review at the time was of the opener:

QUOTE
Larry Nager (Cincinnati Enquirer)
Over The Rhine showcases lead singer, lead guitarist
Concert review

By Larry Nager
The Cincinnati Enquirer
"Thank you for coming out tonight for Ohio," Over The Rhine's Karin Bergquist greeted the crowd of around 1,100 Saturday night at Coney Island's Moonlite Gardens.

For the next three months, the five-piece Cincinnati-based band, led by Bergquist and her husband/keyboardist/collaborator Linford Detweiler, will be bringing Ohio, OTR's fine new album, to the rest of the country. Saturday, they brought it home.

And they gave their diverse crowd -- several generations of hippies, yuppies and everything in between - a pretty thorough Ohio tour, playing most of the double CD. The songs came alive in the hands of the latest version of OTR, which, almost seven years after the departure of Ric Hordinski, finally has a world-class lead guitarist again.

Paul Moak hasn't yet found his place in the band, but his remarkable versatility and sense of dynamics lifted OTR to new levels, as he played sitar, vibes, pedal steel and assorted six- and 12-string guitars. Combined with the sturdy rhythm section of bassist Rick Plant and drummer Will Sayles, this is the most rocking version of OTR since the early days, when Detweiler played bass and Brian Kelley handled the drums.

But the gem of OTR remains Bergquist. As the group has had its ups and downs, going through personnel changes, trying on various musical styles and dealing with the vagaries of the music business, she has quietly evolved into a mature, spectacularly nuanced lead singer.

She was a spiritual seeker on "Long Lost Brother"; a sly temptress on "Cruel and Pretty"; an openhearted pop-rocker on "Show Me"; a soul singer on "Nobody No. 1." And, on "She" her shattering portrait of a woman locked in an obsessive, abusive relationship, she was a masterful interpreter of complex emotions.

And though OTR focused on Ohio, including Bergquist's solo, voice-and-piano version of the title track, there was also time for a few old favorites, including "All I Need is Everything" and their final encore, "Latter Days."

It'll be interesting to see how this group evolves in the course of the tour. They already had the singing and songwriting. Now, in Moak, they have a rock-star-in-the-making. If Detweiler and Bergquist give him the space to take off, this could be the best OTR yet. Saturday, they did Ohio, and their hometown, proud.

But boy, their choice of opening acts needs serious work. Griffin House opened the night at 7:45 with 20 minutes of mediocre signing and sporadically interesting songwriting. His best moment came when he made a cell phone call in the middle of the set. I guess he was bored, too.

Even so, that was the highlight of the openers. The Chicago duo of Josephine Foster and Andy Bar, who call themselves the Children's Hour and otherwise seemed like perfectly nice people, followed with an excruciating 30 minutes. Combining Foster's tone-deaf imitation of Natalie Merchant with the couple's dangerously incompetent guitar playing and derivative songwriting, they managed to alienate even OTR's famously genteel fans, who loudly chatted and pointedly ignored the "music."

Hehe.

I gotta take up for Griffin house. I think he's one of the better acts I've seen open for them. My wife calls him "Baby Bono" because of his timbre.

Thanks for posting the setlist Bill. It was a nice, but frankly far too predictable set (and setlist). The brilliant "Latter Days" closer somewhat redeemed it for me, and that was an unscheduled song.

Certainly the St. Elizabeth set was (in my book) miles better than what we got at the Taft. But that's probably just me.
