"I'm Not There"

Anyone aware of this biopic by Todd Haynes? Seems I've seen a trailer for it somewhere (maybe on PBS?). I love Haynes' work and think this might be quite interesting. He uses 6 different actors to portray Dylan throughout the film.

The 6 actors are:

  • Marcus Carl Franklin
  • Cate Blanchett
  • Ben Whishaw
  • Christian Bale
  • Heath Ledger
  • Richard Gere.

You can view a short trailer here.

You can read more about it here.

I must admit that I'm intrigued and looking forward to seeing it.

Yes, actually, I have heard of it! The Hubbie and I are looking forward to it coming out. We're both really interested to see what it will be like. Sounds like it will be good!

Similarly, I saw a version of Hamlet, once, where Hamlet was portrayed by three characters. One was a female. It was fantastic!!

I dig this sort of thing. ;o)

I put some scattered, rambling thoughts on the movie in my blog this morning for anyone curious:

Bottom line, if you're a Dylan disciple, go see it. If you don't know anything about the man besides "Blowing In The Wind" or "Like A Rolling Stone," you're probably better off seeing Enchanted.

I just read your blog about the movie. Thanks, bunches! After reading it, I'm even more excited to see this one. I'm sure it will be one that I will have to wait to rent because there's no way in hell our Kerasotes 8 is refined enough to show a Todd Haynes film. Hell, they probably don't even know who he is. I've been a fan of his since "Poison" with Julieanne Moore and absolutely love his film school version, "Superstar," of Karen Carpenter's struggle with anorexia (which the Carpenter family has tried to ban) in which he uses a Barbie doll that he shaves down with a razor blade through the film to represent the anorexia. It can be viewed here if you haven't seen it.

Thanks again!

I think you'll like it then. I admit I wasn't familiar with Todd Haynes except for 'Velvet Goldmine', but I'm sure you'll love it. He's definitely got a very interesting style as a director.

i went to see the film this weekend, and overall i liked it but it was one of the odder films i've seen in quite awhile. i'm a fan of dylan and i liked this "take" on his life. dylan approved the making of the film, though haynes never met him! it definitely continues in the mystery of who dylan is... like walrus steve, i didn't get the richard gere character, but i'm thinking that fantasy and character play heavily in dylan's life/style? and he seems to fancy a western style? anyone else?

i re-watched "no direction home" today... but now i'm watching the karen carpenter story from the link cher gave us! i've only ever seen "far from heaven" by haynes before yesterday.

this might help a bit with that...

PETER TRAVERS | ROLLING STONE - The final section of the movie, and the most problematic in terms of style shock, belongs to Richard Gere as Billy, not just the outlaw Dylan played in Sam Peckinpah's "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" but the Dylan who went into exile in Woodstock, New York, after his 1966 motorcycle crash. The Gere sequence, opulently produced and featuring an irresistible rendering of "Goin' to Acapulco" by Jim James, may throw audiences off. But the Fellini-esque circus atmosphere is exactly where the film has been heading all along.

I thought about that too, but it just seemed like a bit of a stretch...Dylan's post accident exile lasted only about a year or so until the release of John Wesley Harding. He only made sporadic performances between the accident and the 1974 tour with The Band, but his exile was not as long or dramatic as the movie version implies, so it felt like a bit of a stretch. (additionally, the year of 'exile' was among Dylan's most prolific writing periods, resulting in not only the JWH album but The Basement Tapes)

Gere was excellent in his portrayal, it just seemed a bit too abstract for me, I guess, compared to everyone else in the film.

Still need to see No Direction Home. So much stuff, so little time...heh.

Oh my...most of this would probably go right over *my* head, but 'Yote's a total Bob Dylan junkie (he's been on a Dylan jag for weeks, working on rebuilding his collection). Too bad we missed it when it was in theaters here - I just checked and the DVD release date isn't until March 4, 2008. *sigh* Guess I'll have to keep my eyes open. biggrin.gif

i'm really excited about this film. the trailers i've seen have been really good--blanchett actually got a howl of surprise out of me, which is saying somehting. i love her stuff, but if the trailer is any indication of her performance as a whole--she is going to go off the meter for this one.

richard gere...? (closes eyes and puts both fingers in ears). richard gere????

still. im pumped for this.

: )

Did you all see that Blanchett won a Golden Globe for her performance?

Coolio!

Mine came in yesterday, so I guess I know what my weekend viewing will be. I hope to see "Iron Man" tonight.

this is a brilliant movie. very strange, beautifully photographed, a bit pretentious (ok, very) but, considering the subject (and i love him) how could it not be?

i can not imagine that anyone who is not a dylan fan with a pretty good knowledge of him, his life and his career would have any clue what's going on though.

and cate blanchette is amazing (the 30+ second scene where he first met the beatles and as legend has it, and the scene implies, got them high, is brilliant & hilarious) as is the use of his music in telling the story.
