The vast majority will likely want to ignore the following:

For those with a DVD-A player or even a standard DVD player that has the audio running into an amplifier via a digital signal (S/PDIF or Toslink), there is a higher-quality version of this available here:
http://www.archive.org/details/otr2007-08-31.flac24

The 24-bit set can't just be burned to a DVD as a data disc, though, so if you want to explore this option, let me know and I might be able to guide you through it, or we can B&P for a DVD-V disc that should play on pretty much any DVD player with the same results as a true DVD-A disc. While this will play just fine with analog audio interconnects, you're not likely to hear any improvement in quality over the CD version without the digital connection and decent equipment.

Is this definitely the same show? I'd expect Shawn's to be better quality if it is (matrix will be better than just soundboard and lossless will be better than either radio or internet radio).

If this is the same show, I won't bother to record the broadcast version (which will help me save precious hard drive space!)

A couple of things--first, I certainly don't intend to steal WNKU's thunder. I had checked their website last week and didn't see anything about the broadcast, and had assumed it had gone out live and was, well, done. I probably should have asked Brian about this, though, and/or checked the broadcast schedule for the night of the show. Regardless, please help support the station if you're of a mind to do so--they've done a lot for OtR over the years and sponsored the concert.

WNKU had a mic splitter and their own mixer, so it will undoubtedly sound a bit different than the mix I have, which was basically Dave's stereo mix from the board plus my mics. I didn't see any audience mics for the station's setup, so the audience may be a bit less obvious, which can be good and bad. The between-song banter would likely be cleaner (assuming they're broadcasting the entire show in the first place, which I think is the case judging from the times Brian gave). I found the bass to be a bit light from the board (Dave was mixing for the "house" and I thought that sounded great, and this is fairly typical) and adding the mics helped that quite a bit. If you're doing you're own mix, though, that wouldn't be an issue, and you'd be getting the signal pre-effects, so you wouldn't have to contend with the reverb that's added to the live sound, for instance. So, I would be suprised if the WNKU mix isn't better than what I have, though perhaps slightly less concert-like with less obvious audience. They're professionals, after all, whereas I'm not, and I'm pretty dependent on the mix I get from the board and a pair of mics recording the PA . . . Having said that, I think this is perhaps the best-sounding OtR show I've recorded, and you can get it without the FM compression (and you could actually get it at significantly better-than-CD quality if you want to explore the 24-bit set). My suggestion would be to go ahead and record the broadcast, decide which version you personally want as a "keeper" and then delete the other. Or, don't download this yet, record the broadcast, and then compare it to the VBR stream at the LMA page and make your decision.

Oh puh-leeze Shawn, that last part is true only in the most literal sense! You sure are a modest fella though, especially for a taper. wink.gif Many thanks for all your time and effort on this matrix!

I plan to download this and record one of the WNKU webcasts and listen to both, myself. I'm curious to see who makes Brian's introduction sound better! laugh.gif

I agree - I certainly wasn't saying this or that would be better, just something to listen to while you're waiting for Shawn's version. And, no I wouldn't consider it upstaging WNKU. Not at all.

I'm w/ Keith, Shawn. It's the best one I've heard. Just teriffic. Thanks you thank you
ShawnF
Well, the thanks really go to K&L for letting us make the recordings in the first place, to Loud and Clear for the high-end soundboard, and to Dave Foreman for his skills at the soundboard--that's really why it sounds good, ultimately. Maybe let 'em know next time you get a chance. I'm just glad I didn't do anything to muck it up wink.gif When life's a drag we'll get stoned on music!

ShawnF,

This sounds great! While it can never be as good as it was actually being there, this brings it all back to me...

Thanks!

Thanks Shawn for recording the show and thanks to K&L for allowing the music to get out there---its kinda fun to go back and hear a recording of a show that you saw done "live in concert"--and I will get ya those CDs one of these days for the CST shows--I think I will throw in a few to get the Coney show too---

Well, that was interesting. I happened to tune into WNKU tonight in the middle of "Who'm I Kiddin'," but I was surprised that they only played the show up until the end of "B.P.D.," leaving "Orphan Girl" and the 5 encore songs missing. Bummer. Therefore, I have to say Shawn's version is definitely better. laugh.gif
