Huge thanks to Dan -- oops, I mean «°¤°» -- for providing a copy of this wonderful recording of Over the Rhine's 1997 concert with the Northern Kentucky Symphony, sourced from Don Smith. Not only is it a unique performance with many enchanting moments, but the sound quality on this CD is exceptionally good! (I'm assuming it was recorded from the WNKU broadcast) There are a total of 23 tracks -- aside from the songs listed above, there are song intros and patter between many of the tracks with music, like this musing from Linford:
Well... if we decide to tour with these people, we're definitely gonna have to get another van! Many of the musical tracks feature Over the Rhine or the orchestra performing without each other. The tracks featuring both are
Latter Days, All I Need Is Everything,
Mary's Waltz (which appeared on Amateur Shortwave Radio),
Jacksie, and of course the grand finale
Dancing Queen.
Note that since the recording I received was apparently burned Track-At-Once at some point in its history (with 2 seconds of silence at the end of each track), I've taken the liberty of laboriously splicing out the gaps with a .wav editor and burning the tracks back to CD Disc-At-Once. Only cuz I love y'all!

So... we're going to try
a tree and not a vine for this one: I'm sending a copy to Bill and he'll be sending copies to Stiv and Kent (Brian is getting a complimentary copy for raising the topic to begin with). When Stiv and Kent receive their copies, they should post in this thread, and then the first two people to PM one of them with their mailing address are sent copies, and those people are obliged to offer it up to two others etc. until no one else is asking for it.
Please be sure you are able to make faithful copies of CDs before asking someone to send you this! If you have a late model CD drive and Nero or Roxio or Sonic software, you should be fine. Please use good quality blank CD-Rs, and don't write the copies faster than 16X. Do
not rip the tracks to mp3s on your computer and then burn them to a CD! If you are unable to copy CDs, I would advise contacting someone who has already received the disc about a B&P.
Enjoy!

(and thanks again, «°¤°»!)

Or it could just go up on the Archive. No real need to torrent, I don't think, unless the origination with WNKU poses a problem, but I'm pretty certain I've seen other radio recordings there.

Of course that is, if no one sees a problem with a torrent somewhere? Archive.org would be just as well I think.

I don't think the origination from broadcast is a problem after 10 years, but I'm not personally comfortable uploading a recording to LMA that is about half performances by the Northern Kentucky Symphony. I don't see them on the archive's list of approved artists!
I don't care who seeds the torrent, but I would still love for some kind soul to tell me how to do it myself.

I have a paid membership with megaupload, but even zipped the .wav files may be too big for sendspace or for people to download from megaupload without having a paid account.
I can, however, host a zipped file of 192kbs mp3s on my website for people who are satisfied with that -- it's FM-quality sound to begin with, so it really won't make much difference vs. the CD. Just give me a day or two.

I think I can walk you through starting a torrent, but when I was about to double-check to make sure I remembered how, I found that my Dime account had expired. Does anyone here know of another tracker we can use that doesn't have too many users most of the time? I was using v2.1 of MakeTorrent back when I used to be more active here, and IIRC it was fairly self-explanatory. I have the old installer handy if you want it - it's less than a mg so it should be easy enough to e-mail over.
Re: Live Music Archive: I think there might be an additional issue involved here because Linford already selected a portion of this recording for a commercially available CD. That further muddies the legality of posting this up there.

Wow. All kinds of issues with this one. Keith's right about the orchestra-only tracks being a problem for the Archive, so I think that can be ruled out, and the commerically released portion would make that a no-no for Dime unless it appeared without that part. bt.etree.org might also be a problem, and there's been a big blowup in the taping community about that site, so I'm not prepared to urge that one right now anyway. The Trader's Den might be the best spot for a torrent, as it's completely open for membership, unlike Dime, and rather more relaxed in their enforcement.
http://www.thetradersden.org/index.php?
How to make a torrent:
http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/faq.ph...t#faq_a_torrentIn their FAQ page on audio uploads, it does state no officially released material. I know that site has a reputation for not being as well-policed as others, but I'll leave it up to others to decide what to do about it. Keith, I can walk you through the torrent creation process if the above link isn't sufficient, though I only really know Azureus well. Maybe we should consider leaving the official track out, or at least getting Linford's OK before we go making it publically available for free. Which is kinda what we're doing with the tree, I guess. I feel like I'm raining on everyone's parade today . . .

Thanks, Danny and Shawn. I'll touch base with Linford before torrenting the recording anywhere, although it seems pretty lame to me to make it available without Mary's Waltz, especially since the commercially released version on ASR was mastered from a better source than this recording. Regarding the flap over etree, I think many tapers are way overreacting and I'm not inclined to boycott them myself over the rude remarks of one moderator.

I definitely agree with the overreacting (I haven't felt the need to pull the few things I've put up there), and gave up on the issue for now when it went it went past 20-some pages on the subject, but the other etree mods' defense of that guy irked me a bit. If anyone is curious about this, it started when a taper complained that an etree mod changed his info text file in a torrent he put up without any warning or advance communication, or any indication that he had done so. The responsible mod came onto the tapers forum and told tapers to stick their mics in a place that would make it most uncomfortable to sit, to paraphrase. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you . . .

Terri, Brian, and Mike play on this one, and they even spice up the songs that aren't played with the orchestra ("Poughkeepsie" never sounded better!). "Jacksie" sounds amazing, and the orchestra arrangement perfectly catches every little thing Ric did with the e-bow. You have to hear it to believe it.

*entering trivial, inconsequential details mode*
Two slight observations on the tracklist in the info file that came with the torrent, neither of which really matter very much. The first is the name of the recently deceased for the spoken bit that is Track 11. Had no idea who this was until I listened, and then it became clear--he's referring to Georg Solti, longtime music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (one of my favorite concert memories is seeing him conduct Beethoven 6 and Bartok Concerto for Orchestra on walk-up front-row first balcony tickets immediately after having seen a Cubs game at Wrigley in 88. Very lucky, but made for a great day!).
The second is the orchestral piece in Track 12. It is definitely the Londonderry Air tune, also commonly known with the text "Oh Danny Boy." This specific arrangement, though, is by Percy Grainger and is titled _Irish Tune from County Derry_. Just in case anyone would want to try to find out what it is, exactly, I guess.

D'oh! That's pretty lame of me not to make the connection with Solti, considering I actually own a CD of him conducting Beethoven's 3rd & 4th piano concertos with Vladimir Ashkenazy and the Chicago Symphony. In my defense, I don't think I've listened to any classical recordings performed on modern instruments for 15+ years now.
As for Londonderry Air, well -- you've heard one arrangement, you've heard 'em all!

Thanks for setting the record straight, Shawn.
