Just got back from Cstone (pardon my dust).
Thursday night was the greatest evening of Cstone music ever invented.
Violet Burning rocked, Monk played (though I chose to take a break during this); Rosie Thomas was too short but played a wonderful set of heartbreaking goodness; and HOLY FREAKIN PIGFARM did Ric rock the muthaf'k'n tent down playing with Leigh Nash!!! one of my favorite points in the weekend, easily. It was the closest I could imagine to recapturing those early glory days when he was with OtR. I think Ric is at his best as a guitarist for someone else (Monk has bored me a few times... just too much of that one element that is absolute magic when part of a bigger whole). I think this tour has been covered elsewhere here, so let me just add my resounding affirmation as to how much you NEED to see this combo if you liked old OtR at all and wish Ric were back in the band... OtR put on a pointedly good show this year at an unusually cold Cstone midnight hour. it was the closest theyve come to having Ric back on stage with them, as he was tearing down while they were setting up. I hoped against hope, but if it didn't happen that night, it aint gonna ever happen. I was also hoping that either Tess Wiley or Leigh would join the other during one of their sets to do some old Sixpence Beautiful Mess stuff. but apparently everyone has moved on in their lives. I'd say "bummer" to that if each of those shows weren't so incredibly good.

I got a brief chance to meet Zayne, live and in person before the show, at the poor girl's unfortunate seat. maybe next time she'll have better luck with finding a spot at the show... like maybe she could actually get onstage and sit next to Karin, rather than having to settle for being mere inches from the stage dead center in front of Karin like she was... (we didn't do too bad either, 1 row back and just a few seats closer to Linford's end of the stage)...

that's all. I've been driving for 8 hours, got a grand total of 10 hours of sleep combined in the last 5 days, and my eyes are going to fall right out of my head in a few minutes if I don't get to bed...

I'm back from Cornerstone, too, and I'm still trying to parse out what all happened during the week. I'll write a full review here very soon.

Loved seeing Ric with Monk. He was in line behind me at the vending cart where I got a ribeye sammich and he ordered a butterfly pork chop sandwich. (How's that for insider info?) The Monk show was pretty much the same show that he did at Cornerstone in 2004 except this time they showed up on time and sound-checked before playing. Ric was amazing with Leigh Nash. I was really, really hoping he would play a song or two with Over the Rhine, but knew better. He did stick around backstage for much of OTR's show, though. I enjoyed his playful dig at OTR during the Monk show.

"I hear there is a folk band playing later tonight."

*crowd cheers*

"Well, I'm not so much into the folk music. I like the rock music."

As for Over the Rhine, all I have to say is that Mickey Grimm's drum solo was so incredible it not only blew out the power in the tent, but it was awesome enough to turn it back on.

Also, one of the new bands I discovered at the festival was a little band called Tifah. They remind me very much of Over the Rhine without sounding like Over the Rhine at all. Check them out at www.tifah.com

Real review to come soon, I promise!

Did you notice when Ric was doing his sound check he broke into the intro to If I am Drowning, and as he did it I saw his eyes kind of scan the crowd with a little smirk on his face. Oh what a tease. A late night cornerstone version of If I Am Drowning with OTR would have been the Frickin Bomb.

I went too for my third round of C-stone fun. There are so many die-hard festival people there that somehow I still feel like a newbie at all of this. It has been five years since my last visit, so it was time to take the drive there and experience the joy of sitting on a haystack eating my corndog, surrounded by my favorite music and soaking in the summertime joy of it all...

Over the Rhine is so wonderful to come on out and perform in the old corn fields for us. Karin looked beautiful as always and her voice was superb; even though it was the famous midnight show and well past her usual bedtime, as she mentioned on stage. I did not think she could look more beautiful than she did last time I saw her in May with her dragon print dress and red velvet top but her sundress was perfect for the festival. This was their fourteenth year at the festival and I am so grateful that they keep coming back. I loved our seats. My favorite spot is always to the left to see Linford at the piano and Karin all in one glance. The only thing is I couldn't see his fingers on the black and whites of the keys...I always love to see the piano player playing...

Interesting how much everyone loves to hear the song Ohio played. Cheers filled the crowd. I never grow tired of the melodic sounds of Karin playing, along with her voice. She once again remembers and honors her past as she sings from deep down her soul in some mysterious place that belongs only to her and somehow we all get to glimpse at occasionally.

Drums are not my favorite solo instrument but when Mickey plays the drums I end up with a goofy smile on my face everytime and am absolutely amazed at the passion he puts into things. I trust Linford and Karin completely with the talented musicians they have brought to the table for the OtR communion over the years. The way he kept playing after the power blew was a moment no one will forget who was there for the experience. I had the chills...and not just because it was so cold and crisp. My fair trade coffee and my blanket still didn't fend off the chilly night air but it brought along a little extra energy which I needed seeing as I had been at seminars and concerts the entire day and evening. Still, the last concert of the night was the one I most looked forward too and they did not disappoint.

When it is over and done with I bask in the miracle of it all and thank God that I had the chance to experience something so refreshing and refueling for the spirit.

Oh yeah! And I loved finally meeting Zayne!!!!

Carrie,

What a wonderfully written comment on a magical night!

This was my first visit to cornerstone and your comment on feeling like a "newbie" hit home with me.

I have waited 3 years to get to see them live. In that time they have only been to Texas once and I was unable to make the show. I sat spellbound grinning like a chessshire cat for 90 min. I have witnessed many of the greatest performers of the last 30 years in a live setting and OTR last week was one of the best...and in a cold tent no less!

I am praying that they will come to Dallas Texas soon... I want my friends to have a chance to experience what I did last week...

Best regards,

Chip

Wow! Zayne was popular this year! In that case I will add that it was nice to see you again.
Josh
*envious of all you guys who made it out to cornerstone*

Maybe next year.. =P
Carrie
Thank you! I'm so happy for you to have experienced OtR there for the first time. It is the perfect setting! Here's hoping you get more of these experiences in the future!

The Over the Rhine set was one of the best of the year at Cornerstone, and I was lucky enough to be front and center for it. Usually I end up a good bit farther back for their shows at the fest, but this year, attendance at the more "adult" shows seemed down a good bit.

The biggest surprise of the night for me was Jake's expanded role on bass, guitar, lap steel, dobro, etc. He's contributing a lot more to the show, even compared to the last time I saw the band before Cornerstone, a couple of months ago in Atlanta.

My Cornerstone pics, including a few decent Over the Rhine shots, are at http://www.flickr.com/photos/vapspwi/sets/72157600691468921/.

Over the Rhine was the highlight of my week at Cornerstone. Here's a link to The Trumpet Child on the YouTube site, which was one of my favorite songs of the night:

More to come.

THAT...is the shit. great camera work. might be my favorite song of their set.
Thank you, sir! keep em coming.

(anyone have some video of Ric rockin out with Leigh Nash? I needs to see some-o-dat again)

Is anyone else a bit uncomfortable with this? The album is still more than a month away, and K&L have asked that we not upload any of the new tunes until after it's out . . . I would hate to see future recording privileges be put in jeopardy is all.

I did not know that. I will take that video down until the CD is out.

OK--thanks! Not trying to be a stick in the mud, and I know it's not explicitly stated anywhere obvious that I'm aware of, so this is bound to happen. But that's why the vine section has been so quiet for months. There's going to be a slew of recordings that will become available once the album's out smile.gif

I could be the first person in line? smile.gif

What about posting video of old stuff? It was such a great show, I'd hate for fans not to experience the benefit of it. They played some great older tunes - BPD, Firefly, Fever, Orphan Child.

Yes, please! I was there and want the memories back to experience it all over again! I really want Trumpet Child back up too, as soon as possible!
