Hush Now

("Fool") was listed after "Hush Now" on the setlist but was not played due to time

I'll write up a little review tomorrow, but...an awesome show. From a purely musical standpoint, the best OTR show I've seen in a very long time...maybe it was due to the fact that it was a larger, outdoor thing rather than the tiny rooms they usually play, but they almost kinda rawked a bit, and it was great. A little on the short side (cause it was a festival thing) but there wasn't one wasted minute...I'd go out on a limb and say this was my favorite OTR show since the 2004 Christmas tour.

i was thinking about it but that's a long drive and an expensive hotel room for what i'm sure will be a shortened set.

If OTR Starts at 8:30 and the festival closes at 10, it's likely they'll do a mostly full set.

i told you so. laugh.gif

and it's not as simplistic as the size of the venue or the crowd, it's them. as i've said quite a few times recently, they are really "feeling it" right now. now more than ever. the "rawking" rolleyes.gif thing isn't new either, and the "trilogy" of firefly, ohio and b.p.d just kicks ass. everything just seems to be "clicking."

Desperado I Don't Wanna Waste Your Time

Steve, You've mentioned before your perceived similarites but personally, I'm not getting that connection when I hear IDWWYT. It's one of my favorites. But then, I love The Eagles' Desperado too. Slow, thoughtful...well, you know.

Glad you had a great time at a great show.

You gotta remember that I was in music theory/analysis classes for about 5 years...a lot of it is kind of useless but the ear training classes were really helpful...the upside is after taking all that, you can listen to a song as it's happening and figure out how to play it just from listening, or write out a chord chart or something like that, even if you don't have an instrument with you.

The downside is, you can't escape it, in that everything you hear, you're kind of subconsciously analyzing in your head. Its kind of like little kids wanting to take things apart just to see what's inside...I can't really stop my brain from doing the same thing when I hear music. The problem is, when two songs have basically the same chord progression, same piano intro, and same tempo, you can't really ignore it. rolleyes.gif (when the Trumpet Child comes out, listen to the two songs back to back...trust me)

Or if you need another analogy...try watching a movie with a couple of film majors. laugh.gif

The rawking thing is pretty new though in the last few years...the only other time I'd seen them play like that was at the 20th Cenutry shows in '04, the last time they had a full-time guitarist. Jake did a pretty good job on guitar (for a bass player wink.gif), and that was really the high points of the set was when Linford was on bass...a really nice, full sound that I hadn't heard since that infamous '04 show. Kick-freaking-ass.

I hadn't heard "Last Night On Earth" since it was on their myspace page for about 2 hours that one day (still not really up for paying $15 for a CD with one song) but that may have been the best song of the set...it was like a stronger incarnation of "Show Me," really great song that deserved a far better fate. Hopefully that will stay in the setlist for awhile, since none of the new songs really seem to be able to match that or "BPD" or "Firefly" in intensity...(not passing judgment, just saying more "saucy" than "rawkin")

And the full band "Ohio"? That was a "why didn't they just do it like this in the first place?" moment...hopefully they'll record that version for the next live disc. Cool atmospheric guitar stuff from Jake on that one.

There were a lot of people waiting to talk to K&L afterwards so we didn't stay; it's more important they get to talk to new fans who may not have met them before, but I did see Mickey's wife (who sang with OTR for a few tunes) and talked to her for a few minutes...she was incredibly sweet, although seemed kind of surprised that anyone recognized her. Their son was with her, and he seemed to be a hyper little kid...you think he got that from his dad? laugh.gif

i asked jake how that came about a couple on months ago in NYC, he told me (and i'm paraphrasing) that it was a "happy accident" kind of thing. linford had called him just before they headed out on tour and asked him to bring his electric along, he was sitting on stage tuning it during soundcheck, karin was soundchecking "ohio" and he started playing along with her. she stopped, looked over at him and he said, "i'm sorry, i'll stop" she said "no, keep playing," good call, and it evolved into the full band version.

I get what you mean there. Actually, was it you that posted a link to the Pachebel Canon video on you tube? That was a great example. I just don't immediately 'go there' for that song.
Say...I've got some great songs that I have been searching for chord charts for. Are you for hire?
BTW...to continue with this blatent, embarrassing hijack, are chord charts the way a music major reads music for guitar or do you read tabs? I just can't get into the tab thing. hmmmm.

Wish I heard that full band Ohio...sounds great.

you don't think "who'm i kiddin' " "rawks"? unsure.gif

personally, i think that's as intense as anything in their catalog. and as "rawkin'"

The drum solo was pretty kickass...I like the vibe of that song, and I can totally see what they're trying to do, but melodically there isn't that much to it. Mick Jagger could pull off that kind of stuff (see "Midnight Rambler" or "Slave") but Karin's at her best when she has some really great melodic progressions behind her singing. It was a fun performance, but the song didn't move me a whole lot...although it did reaffirm my theory that they need a full-time guitarist. That song would sound kinda cool with some kick-ass slide guitar, no?

I'm just a little confused by it though..."Who'm I Kiddin'" aside...their show moved in a fuller, more intense direction while the new songs seem to be going in an even mellower, jazzier direction than DP was...I'm not sure how this is going to pan out in the end, but I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Jake and Mickey are the best thing to happen to this band in years....I'd still like to see one more person onstage so Jake could stick to the bass...that guy who's name I can't remember who played about 6 different instruments at the Taft show would be cool...but this is definitely the best live lineup since the Ohio tour, IMO.

Sorry dude...just an opinion. One of the great things about music is that two people can hear the same thing and have two completely different reactions about it. It'd be great if everything all our favorite artists did was absolutely mind-blowingly awesome 100% of the time to every single person who listened, but on the other hand, it wouldn't make for very interesting discussion, would it?

no need to apologize, "dude." and no one said that. i just think it's kind of funny (and sad to some degree) that everything just has to be drilled down, (over) analyzed, compartmentalized, compared and written up and filed away like a book report rather than just be "heard" and enjoyed (or not). it just seems to be a drag of a way to listen to music, jmho tho.

personally, i couldn't care less if you like it or not (or if you like anything but toto laugh.gif , U2 & genesis for that matter). your (or anyone else's for that matter) opinion(s) has absloutely zero effect on me or my opinions, as i'm sure mine do on you. to each his/her own. me, i just listen, if it finds a place in my head or heart, i like it. the stronger the connection, the stronger my feelings for/about the music. it's that personal connection, i don't need a book or something in my educational past to tell me it's good music or not. i don't give a shit about "melodic progressions," (and karin compared to mick?!?!) "chord progressions" and "music theory/analysis," i like the way it sounds, what it says, how it make me "feel." overly simplistic? maybe. but to me, that's what it's all about. how it moves me. i guess i just find the hyper-critique and overanalysis of everything to be a bit of a ::yawn:: and kind of laughable at times. and don't mind saying so.
WalrusOct9
I feel the same way...but for the most part, its the melodic content is what makes me "feel," more than anything else. I don't care what it is, I just care that it's memorable.

Although at least that song isn't derived from the Eagles. laugh.gif

I haven't heard enough Jackson Browne to find him annoying. wink.gif Actually, I really should check his stuff out, because I don't think I really know anything besides "Running On Empty."

The Eagles are great musicans with great vocal harmonies...who's 'Greatest Hits' album needs to be banished to the far depths of hell. laugh.gif

i don't find him annoying, at all, in fact, i love his music. it's just that he wrote "desperado" and the eagles and (linda ronstadt's) are very loyal to the original.

According to the truthiness encyclopedia, "Desperado" was Henley and Frey's fault.

I think Browne was guilty of "Take It Easy" though.

Really...Eagles songs aren't that bad...the first 5,000 times you hear them. wink.gif
