I was quite surprised to see the ad for the annual Rivertown Breakdown show in the new CityBeat issue. It lists as one of the performers "Karen Bergquist & Linford Detweiler", but don't call it Over the Rhine wink.gif This show is taking place Saturday, June 9 at the venerable Southgate House in Newport.

well, is it june 9th or july 9th?

I'm *planning* on going (if everything works out right)...on the recommendation of Coyote, who says a Karin/Linford only show is a MUST see...as the whole catalog is up for grabs (being the only 2 original members from the beginning). smile.gif

What a show tonight at the Southgate House. I have been to MANY OtR shows over the years, yet tonight's 50 min. set at the Rivertown Breakdown festival at the SGH was truly memorable. First things first: this was NOT just a Karin/Linford show, Jake was there as well on bass/slide/electric guitar, and Paul on violin. Karin made apologies for Mickey not being there, due to other commitments.

What made this night memorable is the setlist. At the request of the festival organizers, they delivered a number of river-related songs, including Puoghkeepsie, Ohio, and a couple of others. They also played a brand new song called "Only God Can Save Us Now", which Karin introduced by explaining her experiences visiting her mom in a seniors resting home, which includes a number of patients with Alzheimer's. This one in particular touched me, as I just buried my dad a week ago and he had severe Alzheimer's (love you, dad!).

Here the set list, which I grabbed from Karin's after the show (and for some reason I cannot upload):

Fever (not listed on Karin's set list but that's what they started off with)
Trouble
Poughkeepsie
Only God Can Save Us Now
I Painted My Name
Ohio
Anything At All
I'm On a Roll
I Want U2B My Lover
Nothing Is Innocent
Orphan Girl

fwiw, that song is several years old. karin wrote it not long after her mother fell ill, it's been played a handful of times and it has evolved a little over the years. the intro/set up is truly beautiful, touching and obviously emotional for her. as is the song. she mentioned during the intro the last time that she did it at a CST show that some of the people mentioned were no longer with us.

as she says (and usually credits linford for originating), "life is a head on collision between comedy and tragedy" and the song sums that sentiment up beautifully. and while not a staple in the setlist by any means, has been performed quite a few times in past years, several times at the CST. and is truly a highlight (for me anyway) everytime it sneaks into a show. sorry to hear about the passing of your father.

and "i painted my name"?!?!?! wow!

Yeah, *Painted* in a beautiful 2-acoustic guitar arrangement that was unrecognizable for most of the song - ask Kylie...

It was a unique evening....very intimate-feeling

And, if you stuck around (too few did) you were treated to Bernie Franklin's Disciples in Praise - one of the area's gospel choirs. Whew !!!

For some reason I Painted My Name never stuck with me like the rest of Patience, but I LOOOOVE that it made an appearance! Please please tell me now that someone recorded it!

I didn't see Shawn...(or anyone else) recording

Yeah, that was *exactly* the reaction I got from D.M. when I gave him my show review over the phone last night! But he'd told me...with a Karin and Linford show, the whole catalog was up for grabs.

'Course I was *really* glad to see Jake since he hadn't been able to be at the Taste of Cincinnati show...and DOUBLY glad when he played lap dulcimer during "Poughkeepsie"! Wow that man is versatile! (Told him so after the show, too.)

Yeah, they were awesome, weren't they? I couldn't stay too long (had to run off to work), but it was quite a treat watching Karin and Linford gettin' down wit da gospel. biggrin.gif

I have to say, though, I think my favorite moment (even though it made me cry) was the couple dancing to "I Want You To Be My Love". I agree with Karin...you just don't see people dance like that enough anymore.

That was a pretty cool event last nite...

I felt like a bad fan not knowing what song it was... We had an idea... but couldn't pin it until Brian checked the setlist. It was a beautiful arrangement, tho. I feel lucky to have been there for that.
I wish we could have stayed a little more into the gospel set... but we were hungry, and had some dancing to do. Ha.

It was good to see some folks, too.

Well, I can say if it was me dancing, you'd be crying for a very different reason. wink.gif

Seriously though, unless one pays a crapload for private lessons, where do people learn to dance anymore? My kids have no exposure at all to dancing. Arts in the schools are on the verge of extinction.

As a newer fan, I have an unfair advantage at the moment - I've been working on mindless data entry doing an inventory project at work, and they're letting me wear headphones and listen to music since I'm not on the phones...and so I've spent the last 3 weeks listening to Over The Rhine (and Ellery to mix it up occasinally) every night...all night. And I the most recent album I have is Ohio - at Canal Street I got both the early 3 cd sets and Good Dog Bad Dog (with a Cowboy Junkies and an Ellery thrown in...a good chunk of that gifted by Coyote, bless his heart), so I've been inundating myself with the early music.

See? Unfair advantage. smile.gif Don't feel bad.

Unfortunately, I'm willing to bet that it was only part of this setlist because they were asked to do songs with the "river" theme. But I certainly wouldn't complain if they play it at Coney Island or the next round of Canal Street shows. laugh.gif (I can dream, right? I'm still waiting to hear "How Does It Feel?" or "June" live again. Or to really dream, "Ubiquitous Hands.")

I can't believe "Little Blue River" wasn't on the setlist.

It was, if I'm not mistaken, as well as a handful of others that they didn't have time for

I remember them, too. I think that's part of my problem. wink.gif (But I didn't hear them nearly as much as I've heard most of GDBD live, and maybe that's another part of the problem. tongue.gif ) It would be nice to hear them pull out a real oldie for some of us old-timers once in a while. cool.gif
