I was a latecomer to the series, pretty much ignoring the first two movies until I was talked into seeing the first on DVD earlier this year. I enjoyed it, and soon after watched the second one, which I also enjoyed.
The third installment started out fine, but by halfway through, I thought the overall clutter made it very, very tedious, even during the many protracted action scenes. Johnny Depp was even more hammy and foppish than in the first two Pirates movies, mincing and prancing throughout the picture. The scenes with multiple Jack Sparrows were particularly painful to watch. Another low point was Beckett's slow walk as his ship disintegrated around and behind him, overwrought music swelling all along. And was that sandbar meeting intended as some sort of [ill-conceived] homage to Sergio Leone?
To top it all off, they left things hanging for a sequel, and then, after endless credits, tossed a bone to the audience, "see, Swann and Turner live happily ever after".
