Full Version: Why spelling is important

In this day and age, I am convinced that a grasp of the English language has become a lost art. Sorry to say folks, spell checks can't correct incorrect word useage. For example:

"I know this may seem like a mute point, but I believe the time has come for a 'call to arms' of all Pagans around the country."

Sheesh! This was the opening sentence in an article posted on a Pagan website I visit daily... in the very first sentence no less! I read the rest of the article but found myself on the lookout for mispellings and other grammatical errors of which there were a few. The author of this article was quite articulate; it's just a shame he didn't catch that opening mistake. The mistakes within his well-written article could have been found with a good proofread by someone other than himself. I wish he would have taken the time to have done so then I could have enjoyed the article much more. You may think that's being a bit harsh, but I'm a firm believer that the reader should not be preoccupied by such things.

Oh, and in case you don't know what the heck I'm talking about, it should be "moot point" not "mute point." They are 2 entirely different words.

I catch typos and grammatical errors in stuff all the time. You can hardly even pick up a book anymore without finding at least one, usually on the jacket. It's hard to catch everything, and editing is a lost art, I'm afraid. I think that's a perfect shame.

Don't even get me started.
The mall stores for sparklies insist on having signs that say, "Jeweler on Premise", everywhere.
He's just there as an assumed propostion really. um...really?

I'm starting to find misspellings and grammatical errors in very high profile places. I've always noticed them in other places, but it's getting worse.

I kinda feel accomplished when I catch one though...... unsure.gif

What I'm really a hawk about, though, is formatting inconsistencies. Most web pages drive me nuts (not posts like we make, but, rather, the actual content).

I guess that's what I get for being editor of the school newspaper all those years.

From what I gather reading articles in writing magazines such as Writer's Digest and The Writer---most publishing houses have, in an effort to both cut costs and maximize profits since most of the larger publishing firms are now part of huge publically traded mega-media conglomorates, eliminated practically the entire group of people who once went over books and other publications with a fine tooth comb--

I have also heard that directly from the mouths of agents and other industry types who are usually invited to speak at writing seminars and workshops.

They say that today--it is often up to the authors themselves to do the editing!!!!!

Speaking of writing---- the work on my book officially commences on Saturday when I interview Linford--he is my first interview. Next week I am out of the area, but once I return--I have some more interviews upcoming in the near future.

Seems this is more than just misspelling. It's an "eggcorn."
