I saw it a few weeks ago with some friends at our weekly filmfest.
I hadn't read the book and went in a little blind aside from the topic and was pretty surprised when it turned out to be an actual movie and not a documentary. I did find it on the slower side and don't think I would have missed out had I left the theater but it wasn't bad slow, just slow. And the cast had a lot to do with sticking it out. I love ensembles and this sucker was loaded.
I Loved Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Bruce Willis, Kris Kristofferson and Bobby Cannavale's (funky-spunk guy from SatC) parts.
Heck, even New Belgium Brewing had a co-starring role in this flick. Every scene that had a beer in it had a diff. bottle of NBB.
So yeah, that's mainly what kept me interested. I was into the actual point of the story, which was very sad and very disturbing but it did go too s l o w at some points.

I used FFN as a supplemental text in my soc classes, and I can't for the life of me figure out why this is a fictional film. I'm staying away.

I found it captivating. And disturbing. The book (or audio book) was very good, and I think they adapted this into a "non fiction" film fairly well. It makes it less of a "documentary" trying to "shove animal & human rights issues" down your throat.
30 minutes wasn't a fair shake, jaem.

Richard Linklater is my favorite director, and I work in nutrition, and I STILL haven't seen this. I will have to check it out.
