Just saw this on DVD last weekend and I was very impressed.
Please see Michelle's post in weekend viewing, below.
I did a bit of research on Augusten Burroughs because the story really intrigued me.
If you have seen the movie and wish to read more about his background, here is an article from Britain about the life (past and present) of Mr Burroughs. Very good reading IMHO.
Regarding Annette Bening's role, I agree, she should have been awarded for her fantastic performance. The woman is amazing.
Anyone who sees this movie and would like to discuss, I would love to.
Personally, I believe Mr Burroughs' account of his strange upbringing although the movie may have Hollywoodized it a bit.
I maintain, some of the world's best and most creative art is born from 'tragedy'.

Watched this last night:

Running With Scissors

Annette Bening
Brian Cox
Joseph Fiennes
Evan Rachel Wood
Alec Baldwin
Joseph Cross
Jill Clayburgh
Gwyneth Paltrow
Gabrielle Union
Patrick Wilson
Kristin Chenoweth

It was warped, unbelievable, at times I thought "I don't think I like this movie..." but I did. I so did. Everyone was outta-this-f'ing-world as far as characters and the acting goes. And the film itself was a big "wtf did I just watch!?" experience. In the good way. This movie was a wacky meeting of The Royal Tenenbaums & The Hotel New Hampshire and was just. Dude. Cuckoo. Fabulously Cuckoo.

And on that note, let's cue-up a slight hijack~slash~michelle oscar rant:

Seeing this is another drop in the "the Oscars are retarded" bucket.....
....point is, you should watch Running with Scissors just for the performances, esp. Bening's. Fan.Tas.Tic.

slight hijack~slash~michelle oscar rant over.

Carry on... smile.gif

I read the first couple of chapters and then bought the book. I haven't had the chance to pick it up yet but hope to this weekend. What I read I must say I enjoyed.

Am looking forward to the movie as well.

While Annette Benning was excellent, as was Jill Clayburgh (in a much smaller part), I have to say I really preferred the book. There was just too much material in the book to work well as a 2-hour movie, in my opinion. Then again, this is a common problem with adapting books into movies, so I should be used to it by now. closedeyes.gif

spr, if you didn't like the book, you probably won't like the movie either. Then again, I could be wrong. smile.gif

This was my thought as I was reading the book - how well could it be adapted. Can't wait to get back to it!

Jeanne and Cher..
I had not read the book and was completely unaware of this man's life.
I enjoyed the movie.
Should I read the book? I usually prefer to read a book prior to watching the screen adaptation. I might be bored or disappointed.

OK...so not giving you a chance to respond, I just reserved a copy of the audio book from the library.
It is read by the author, Augusten Burroughs. I haven't listened to an audiobook in several months and I enjoy them at night while in bed. A problem sometimes is falling asleep while listening. We'll see.

Just saw this Trudes. I haven't read it yet. I'm planning on reading it this weekend. I'll let you know.

I finally got my audio copy last week and listened. I finished it last night. I was very impressed. Augusten Burroughs narrated his own book (a huge plus IMHO) and I just loved the way he speaks. His voice reflected the various emotions he experienced and he imitated the voices of the other people in his book as he had perceived them.
The book went into a bit more detail than the movie (as expected). I recommend this audiobook for anyone who is into audiobooks and has enjoyed the movie.
I might add...since I saw the movie first, I put the faces of the actors on the characters. This may or may not have been a good thing.

I rather enjoyed the book but was worried the movie didn't/wouldn't do it justice..HOWEVER... I didn't know that Kristen Chenoweth was in the movie...I will definitely have to check it out now!
