Full Version: Can you freeze a cucumber?

OK, I realize this is kind of a strange question, but does anyone know if freezing a cucumber does anything bad to it? I just bought a bottle of Hendrick's Gin, and because of its hint of cucumber, apparently you're supposed to serve it with cucumber slices instead of a lime. Now I don't drink gin nearly enough to efficiently use an entire cucumber, and I imagine if I just take one slice off it will still spoil in the fridge before I use it. My thought is to slice a whole cucumber and keep the slices in a baggie in the freezer, but will doing so make it lose its cucumberyness? For some reason I have low hopes...

Steve,
In my experience, cucumbers get really soft and soggy when frozen. (I know this because sometimes my top refrigerator shelf gets so cold, stuff freezes. I had a salad there once and the whole bowl was ruined by freezing. Lettuce and tomato likewise don't freeze well at all).
Sorry. Buy really small cucumbers so not too much will be wasted.

edited for dumbness.

Thanks Trudes,
I did an internet search (it's amazing what you can learn from the internet!) and pretty much everyone agrees with you. I'm hoping that since the texture isn't really what I'm looking for--just the flavor, maybe it'll be ok. We'll see. I froze some tonight and maybe I'll see how it goes tomorrow...

Steve, this is just God's way of telling you you need to include more cucumber in your diet. In sandwiches, salads, desserts ( unsure.gif ) and, apparently, gin. blink.gif

Do they have freeze dried cucumbers?

I used to slice cucumber in strips and cook them in stir fries; they were tasty that way...along with strips of carrots, peppers, celery, and chunks of chicken...and a home made sauce of some garlic, ginger, herbs, low-sodium soy sauce mmm. Forgot about that till I read this thread!
