Now, to be clear, I'm not complaining or griping, it's just that this is how the website looked when OtR stumbled into me in August of 2000. And I'm thinking the new site debut'd in '99, is that right? So, seven years. And in those seven years, aside from the addition of the jukebox (which is kickass) the changes I've seen have been removals or relocation for the most part. The book/movie/cd recommendations got stashed in the Words section. The band member history/info page got removed. And I miss the when the mp3 rarity was that vinyl record icon that looked like it was spinning. Well, really, I miss when the mp3 rarity was a monthly thing and actually got changed.

Honestly, what'd I'd really, really love to see is an entire site revamp. Especially after a 'Retrospective' release and a new CD soon on it's heels. Oh, how I hope something's in the works. And I promise, Mr. Eric, I'm not digging on ya. It's just, for a band who's gone through so much change on all levels, some 'new paint', so-to-speak, would be, well, fantastic.

Hi Michelle. I couldn't agree more and just to get the word on the street, plans are under way for a complete revamp of the offial Over the Rhine website. It may take a couple of months, but yes, we are pretty excited about the project. More on that soon. Look for a late summer launch. We're off to the studio with the guys to make some noise.
All the best and thanks for your support!

Way delayed response but, oh, I can't wait!
Actually I can, I mean "Oh, I can't wait!" in the "Well, color me excited!" way.
And while the site itself still has a little while before revampage I would like to comment on the new OtR store - it looks great, it acted great and I dig it. Congrats and thanks for making the move.

and uh, ps: if there's anymore lil' OtR diddies laying around looking lonely, unavailable and unlistened to by fans (ie: Before We Sleep*) ... i'm all over that "I give you .99˘, you give me not released on cd mp3" feature.

*thanks for that

This might be a good thread to keep active, if anyone has any suggestions or input that maybe could be passed on to the band, so they have an idea of what people would like to see. OTR is a special band with special fans, and since in this age a band's website is a big part of the band's "public face," if you will, they should have a website worthy of their, um...awesomeness. smile.gif

I have three suggestions that come to mind:

1) A photo gallery that can take user submissions, and (if possible) be grouped by show, or at least, by tour. I haven't used flickr.com myself, but it seems like it might be a possibility. Obviously we post lots of pics on this forum, sometimes within hours of a show being done, but how cool would it be if all those shots were accessible from the main OTR.com page for everyone to see? (Since obviously there's many fans who love the band, but don't participate here)

2) I can't say this loud enough...keep the flash/java/fancy stuff in check. I think OTR's site needs an upgrade, but I do like that it is easy to find what you're looking for...or at least the tourdates part is right on the main page, which is generally what I'm looking for when I go there. The Queen and Paul Weller websites look pretty, but are kind of a pain in the arse to navigate. A friend of mine does web design and we were talking about the abundace of flash in new web sides, and he made the comment "Designing a web page is kind of like playing lead guitar. You want to show off and solo for 10 minutes, but really no one will appreciate it except you." I have OTR's website in my sig file on other forums, and it's the first thing people are going to see after their friend tells them "you gotta hear this band from Ohio with this singer...holy shit." OTR isn't U2...a lot of visitors to the site are going to be newcomers and people trying to see what the band is all about. I'd say keep the design simple, for that reason alone. I think Hem's website is a really good example. It's not the best thing I've ever seen, but it's easy to navigate and find exactly what you're looking for. smile.gif

3) An interactive "user reviews" section. We kind of have that on this board in the show and album discussion sub-forums, but I think it'd be a nice feature, under the discography, to have a "user sumission" page for each album, where people can come in and offer thoughts, stories, etc, about an album or song. Not really an objective discussion, that's what the forum is for, but anything people want to share with the word about a certain album, and what it means to them. Whether an album helped someone discover something about themselves, or whether they lost their virginity to "My Love Is A Fever," I think this would be a really cool feature. Similarly, a "tourdate archive" page with reviews/setlists of each show would be a nice touch as well.

(sorry, didn't mean for that to be too wordy, but I feel kind of passionately about the flash thing)

I'm excited...this has been way overdue. smile.gif

Thanks for the suggestions Steve. This is a good time for anyone to weigh in if they have a strong opinion or just some suggestions about the 'new and improved' website. We obviously won't be able to please everybody, but we can sure try.
thanks

We don't kind of have that on this board, we do have that on this board. We have exactly what you described on this board. Not to mention all the awesomely cool crapload of other serious/offbeat stuff that comes with this board - which is why I love this board. I get what you're suggesting and in theory it sounds cool and I can see where you are coming from but, and it's just my opinion in the same way this was yours, I don't like the idea of their Official Website being user interactive in any way except that we get links and when you click on one, things like winding up here happens.

When I go to their Official Website I want to read what Cincinnati Beat, or Pop Matters, or New York Newsday, or Songwriter's Monthly or Washingtom Post has to say about my favorite little band from Ohio's new release. I'll come here, to their official forum, to read and interact with my peers and what they have to say. That's what this is for.

And btw, thanks, Eric!

Flickr has a pretty amazing API set for grouping photos together on websites. With proper tagging of pictures by fans, you could do some pretty cool stuff here with minimal work by the tech-y people (or person!) running the site.

I'm hoping to have an interactive feature added soon to my tourdate archive where readers can submit their own reviews and such. It's about 80% there, as always the remaining 20% is the hardest part. Soon and very soon.

I may be in the minority here but, with a few minor exceptions, I really like the current layout. The move to Port Merchandise was nice...that is much easier to navigate and use than Paste ever was.

I like Steve's idea of fan photos making their way to the main site, since they are uploaded so quickly.

The hardest part about a website is maintaining it and keep it up to date on a regular basis. A website like this (or any band website) needs to updated almost constantly. So perhaps enlisting a volunteer fan staff for certain areas, such as photos, would not be a bad thing.

Here are a couple of things I would like to see...

I really like the home page with the menu on the left; however, when you select any of the items the submenu of the new page is suddenly on the top. I like consistancy...when I am browsing a site, have all menus on the same area of the page is nice...easier to navigate that way.

Another thing about the menus, once a user is on the submenu or page there is no quick link to get to another area without first going to the homepage. Example, If I am on "Everbody has a story" and I want to go to "What we need is music" I have to click back to the homepage or use my back and forward buttons. I like all navigation to happen from within the site itself.

Keep the old timey feel with the photos, colors and fonts...I like that. smile.gif

Also, as steve said above...keep the flash stuff to a minimum. A site doesnt need to be overly fancy to get its point across.

We do have it, but there's a lot of people who will see the main site but probably not visit the forum, that was my motivation for suggesting that. Plus, it would serve as a permanent archive of dates, setlists, and reviews, similar to the OTR History site, but this one's official. wink.gif Not a big deal, I just think it'd be cool to have.

And I second the feel of the old-timey photos...I think Michael Wilson's photography has become such a part of the whole OTR...um...thing, that it'd be weird not to have it. smile.gif

Thanks for this thread....

I absolutely love the newsletter archive. I hope that stays and continues.
(Linford's newsletters are priceless.)
I would enjoy seeing more newsletters from Karin, as well. Her stories heard live at concerts are wonderful.
(I love seeing Karin's presence in the Orchard from time to time, BTW)
I personally would like to hear about and see photos of the furry children, too.
I agree that the old sepia photos are so beautiful. I don't care for too much flash, either.
I would totally appreciate a page for sheet music or guitar chords for amateur guitarists to play along while we listen (updated material from the newer stuff)

I'm still thinkin'.

I am glad to see folks interested in and pushing for an update to the OTR website. The current design, while solid, is starting to show its age a bit.

I am pushing for a content management approach to the new site, which makes it SUPER EASY to update the site (no computer geek necessary!). Maybe K&L could update from the road, since adding an article to the site is just as easy (if not easier) than writing an email.

Examples of content managed sites include http://www.bluesnews.com, http://www.blender3d.com, the huge number of sites hosted at http://wordpress.com, and, in fact, my own site at http://www.drewvogel.com.
stivmc
we use content management at work for several things to. It does seem pretty easy for the non design type people.

I agree. I really liked it when there was something that made me want to constantly come back to view the site. I loved the quotes, the poems, etc. I visited the site all of the time, but now I view it only on occasion to check the tour updates.

I do love the feel of the site. It looks like a good cup of hot tea tastes.

That's why I was never to crazy about the color change of the Orchard. This tastes more like watered down koolaid than tea. Man, I hate koolaid.

I agree with both of you. However, that old 'skin' wasn't updated to the new schema when our forum went from 1.x to 2.x versions. I was REALLY bummed about that, but the upgrading of the skin was beyond my meager coding skills. I _DO_ keep my eyes open for a suitable skin!

I completely agree with Michelle, I don’t like the idea of the official website being interactive, imho it’s there to promote the artistry & business of OtR & making it interactive would take away from the Orchard community.

I’ve always enjoyed the website but do feel the main page has become unbalanced & it’s not that easy to navigate especially for a newcomer. I think there should be a much clearer sitemap. I like the Gillian Welch site as far as the banner illustration with the sitemap directly below, it’s functional & creates a nice frame but beyond that it becomes cluttered.

One of my favorite aspects of the site has been the, “I’m Trying To Find The Word…” section. This feature really enhanced my interest in & enjoyment of OtR. I’d like to see the Selected Writings & Recommendations play a bigger role. I also miss the, “Quote of the Week.”

As for all the fancy schmancy technical stuff, I’ll defer to the experts but please have mercy on us poor souls with only a the most remedial understand of computers.

Thanks for all the work you guys put into the site!

My two cents.....

I would like to see more emphasis on:

(1) web-site only musical offerings. These might be sketches of songs (similar to the Snow Angels sketches); live tracks; out-takes; remixes; etc. While I am most eager to receive a physical CD (ol' school in that regard), such as the Live From Nowhere series that has been started, I'd still be happy to pay K/L directly for downloads of unique, web only tracks.
(2) a spot dedicated to member uploaded pictures of the band, set-lists, etc.

Basically, I am here to enjoy and celebrate OtR music. Anything that can help facilitate this would be greatly appreciated by this fan.

Cheers,

Shang.
