For those of you who haven't followed the development of an idea originally suggested by David (rodeoclown) in another thread, we are creating a book together! The theme of this anthology is very simple: What Over the Rhine has meant to each of us and to our lives. John (eustacescrubbs) and I are serving as editors. I'll be collecting the contributions and providing non-content-related feedback on the text pieces as warranted, and John will be handling the graphics, layout and printing. The final collection will be printed as a 8.25" x 10.75" hardcover book, and everyone who wishes to will have an opportunity to order one or more copies in advance at a price of approximately $25 each, which will cover printing and shipping and the cost of a few extra copies to give to Karin and Linford.

All orchard members who want to express in some way the impact Over the Rhine has had on their lives are encouraged to participate! Poetry, nonfiction, fiction, photography and artwork (black & white or grayscale only) will be accepted, and the only criterion is some manner of relevance to Over the Rhine's personal meaning for you. Photos of the band are also welcome. These may be things you've created already or are doing especially for this book, but there must be no conflicting copyrights attached to your submissions. Contributions are limited to three per person. While some of us could probably create a book of our own on this particular theme, we want this collection to be as representative as possible of the entire orchard community, so we advise those of you with lots to say (or show) to be discerning and take your best shots!

Editorial feedback on written contributions will be limited to correcting grammar, punctuation and spelling, and to making suggestions for improving form and/or clarity if warranted. Contributors will have the opportunity to approve or dispute any suggested changes to their work. Those who would like to polish their written contributions before submitting them for the book are encouraged to solicit constructive criticism in the orchard Writer's Forum. Your level of ability as a writer, artist or photographer is much less important than giving your best and most heartfelt effort for this tribute to Over the Rhine! We know good enough is a thousand miles from grace.

Here are the guidelines:

The deadline for contributions is January 31, 2008. This is the FINAL deadline! Orders for the book will be taken shortly thereafter.

Each contributor may submit up to 3 works.

Written work should be 1200 words or less (approximately 4 printed pages).

Written work can be submitted as RTF (Rich Text Format, preferred), as MS Word documents, or as plain Text files. Note that any formatted contribution will not necessarily appear in the same font you used to create it when the book is printed.

Artwork and photos must be black & white or grayscale, and should be submitted in an uncompressed format if possible -- TIFF is preferable, bitmap files and hi-resolution jpegs are also acceptable. Resolution for bitmaps must be 300dpi to 600dpi. The image should be submitted so that it is actual size as you want it to appear in the book at 300dpi, and its dimensions cannot exceed 8.5" x 11" for full-page art (a quarter-inch excess around the perimeter of the image is required for bleeds). If you are working with a .jpg file, which is always 72dpi, you will either need to convert it to a 300dpi bitmap or increase the dimensions of the file to 4.167X its "actual" size on screen (for example, a hi-res jpeg photo to print at 6" x 9" in the book would have to be increased to 25" x 37.5" in size in your graphics or photo processing program). If you can't send large email attachments, send a hi-resolution b&w or grayscale .jpg along with the desired final size and we'll attempt to convert it for you. A caption of 50 words or less may optionally be submitted with artwork.

All submissions must be emailed as attachments to orchard.book@gmail.com accompanied by a note specifying your name as you want it to appear in the book, your orchard name, and any other information you think is warranted. I will do my best to acknowledge your submissions and get back to you with any suggested changes within a week.

Please post any questions or suggestions you may have here, and let's all have fun with this! smile.gif

This is such a fantabulous idea, and I cannot wait to see the finished product.

Thank you Keith and John for all the work you're gonna do.

Some of the best people on earth live here in this Orchard.

Well--I may be a relative newbie to the Orchard and being a hardcore fan of OtR--but along with my own writing project--I will take some time and submit something very soon for my contribution. I will have to think about what the band means to me---and what I will write--but I am sure something will come to me.

this is such an exciting project - i can't wait to have a bit of free time to sit down and work on a submission for the project. smile.gif

thanks in advance for all of your hard work on this, keith & john.

gah!

at least the stuff is due AFTER grad school stuff, so i won't have to worry about both! smile.gif

I think it's going to take me until the deadline to decide which picture I want to submit. laugh.gif rolleyes.gif wink.gif ph34r.gif

Awesome! I'll have to work on what I think. Keeping it within the guidlines of course. ...Sexy cocktail hour stubble...

I'm so psyched that this is really going to happen. Thanks, Keith & John!

I'll be bumping this thread occasionally as a reminder!

what's gonna be on the cover of this hardcover book, if I may inquire?
kentuckiannna
Wow, what a wonderful and generous idea! I'll certainly participate, though it may be just to submit the OtR inspired poem I once posted to Words...

Thanks for all the work you've done, and all of the work you will be doing. I've edited a publication....it's gonna be a lot of work. It's joyful work, though, for the most part. Good luck!

I wonder if this should be cross-posted in the general forum, lest folks miss the message?

Cross-posting is generally not a good idea, but I will post a reference to this thread in one of the existing General Chatter topics.

Thanks so much for putting all of this together Keith and John... I should have an essay and a photo to send to you before the end of Feburary. I'm looking forward to how this all turns out.
keith from ny
An update on the orchard book. So far we have:

1. two really nice photos from Bill
2. ...

I figured most contributions would come in toward the March 31 deadline, but still... this could turn out to be a very thin volume!
BKLYNFRED
I was counting on getting stuff to you soon, Keith ... I have a trip to Chicago planned, where I suspect I can get a good amount of stuff done.

Thanks for continuing the groove, dude.

Keith...two emails are enroute to you. T xo

A reminder, there are just [letsee ... 30 days hath September, yada yada -- hmmm 31, subtract... what's today? oh 8, that leaves] 23 days left to contribute to the Orchard Book!
DustyVolume
Do you have enough entries to make a substatial book? Any chance the date might bet pushed back?
keith from ny
Nope, we're going with whatever we've got March 31, substantial or not. So for those of you we haven't heard from who want to be part of it, I suggest you sit down and write/sketch/photograph something soon (or dig up something from your personal archives) and send it to orchard.book@gmail.com.

fwiw, for those who may not have been around when this discussion/project got started and/or followed it very closely and may have no idea what we are talking about;
QUOTE(katherine @ Dec 22 2006, 04:24 PM) *
i have always thought a collection of letters, poems, songs, essays, etcetera whatever inspired by over the rhine would be a f'ing. bad. ass. idea. it would be pretty easy to publish said anthology through lulu.com.

QUOTE(keith from ny @ Dec 23 2006, 01:52 AM) *
QUOTE(casino @ Dec 22 2006, 10:51 PM) *
one alternative to this, though it would only produce one piece or 2, is doing something similar to 1001 journals. buy a good sized sketchbook and send it around to a list that could grow and grow similar to how a vine works. it would cost only postage and the cost of the book. but it would be FULL, bursting at the seams, and have a great traveled story to it...a journey. people could write in it, attach pictures, draw, whatever...
each year it could show up at the St. Es show and everyone could look through it if they wanted...
I dunno. I may be rambling.

I think the journal is a beautiful idea, but based on my experience with musical vines here in the orchard, I also think Karin and Linford will be dead long before the sketchbook completes its rounds. Unfortunately, it only takes one person dropping the ball to kill the entire project.

I would also really love to see something happen along these lines, however. To that end, I'll be happy to accept contributions via email and to serve in an editorial capacity on the written material (spelling, grammar, etc.) if apples want to send me their OtR tributes over, say, a six month period. We could also incorporate scanned B&W art and photography as .jpg files. Then eustacescrubb can make it all look beautiful and create a .pdf file, which we could have printed as a hardcover book by lulu.com as Katherine suggested (about $20 per book). We could send the books to Linford and Karin, and also have copies printed for ourselves.

Let me know what y'all think! If there's enough interest, I'll post something about this in Over the Rhine Chatter and set up an e-mail account for contributions.

QUOTE(keith from ny @ Dec 28 2006, 03:22 PM) *
I've asked eustacescrubbs if he can commit to working on this tribute project with me, since my talent in the graphic arts is pretty minimal and I have no personal experience with printing. The plan would certainly be to include everyone who wants to contribute. Stay tuned for a proposal very early in 2007!

Thanks to all of you for your enthusiasm and support! An update: John (eustacescrubbs) will be doing the layout for the book, and he and I are currently working on guidelines for contributions we think will be fair for everyone and manageable for us. Other graphic artists are encouraged to submit their own work to be part of the book. Look for the contribution guidelines some time next week.

which brings us to the beginning of this thread...except we now seem to be lacking some of the "enthusiasm and support!" that was here earlier on. which is too bad, this is a great idea. thanks for the effort keith, hope it all pans out well in the end.

Keith,
With about a week left for submissions are we getting enough material for a book?
kylie jo

Many thanks to Stiv, Jeff, Kelly and Jeanne for their recent contributions! smile.gif

We're very close to the deadline for submissions, and so far we have a not-so-grand total of 9 participants and 16 contributions. Karin and Linford deserve better than that from us, so I'm extending the deadline for submissions to June 30, 2007 and raising the maximum number of contributions to 3 per participant. Thanks to those who have already contributed, and also to those of you who may have been working hard to meet the original March 31 deadline.

I would ask everyone here who feels their life has been genuinely enriched by Over the Rhine to please devote a little time sometime in the near future to put something together for this project. It really doesn't need to be elaborate or perfect, just heartfelt. I would also like to say that contributions other than photos of Karin (beautiful as they are) are especially welcome. wink.gif

Thanks!

Thanks for extending the deadline-I was focused on going down to Louisville last week and that had occupied my mind for a few weeks prior--along with the great OtR Canal Street weekend extravaganza-----

Too bad we have so few submissions as yet--but now that the deadline has been extended---OK apples--get those keyboards clicking--I will sit down and write up a submission or two in the next week or so....

A question as well--are pictures going in the book as well--by the time the band plays at the 20th Century--I will have a very good digital camera---one with 8 mega pixels and a twelve power zoom as well--so that should give some pretty high quality photos---I plan to take some good photos at the 2oth Century shows...

I'm sorry I slacked. Thanks for the extension. I have been working on it, for the record. I thought I would polish and expand my "Discourse on Doubt," which seemed pretty popular (judging by the PMs I got at the time), as well as the OtR-and-bad-love inspired (and revised) poem "What I Feel Like." I thought I'd try to find a picture too. I have a ton.

keith or john could probably answer this better and maybe they should. yes, photographs are going to be included in the project. but, i believe the intent of the book is to share our thoughts, and the impact and inspiration that over the rhine, karin & linford and their words and music have had in our lives. not for it to be a book of concert photographs. at least i hope that's not what it becomes, because imho, that could just water down the impact of the book. personally, i have thousands of concert images and did not submit one "traditional" concert picture. also, i don't know how much "post submission" editing that keith and john are planning on doing and how much of an issue that might become but, i'm sure that a bit of "self editing" on our part would be appreciated.

that said, maybe if this one turns out as successful as many of us hope it will, maybe there could be a second project in the future "focused" (i'm so witty wink.gif ) on concert images. that could be very cool also.

as i said, jmho...
