Ok...maybe I've been asleep at the switch...but where did new stuff on Myspace come from??? Sounds great!!! If you can get Myspace player to work properly (it has been pretty bad the last several days). I've only been able to successfully play Like a Radio and Last Night on Earth...both sound wonderful! I can't wait to hear other 2 songs there...a great start to 2007.

What do you people think of the myspace stuff? Would love to talk it up here.

I am back! and Happy New year to all!!!

i'm so confused.

earlier there were no songs, now the xmas songs are showing up. playing even! bah.
bivester
"last night" is the only new song, the others sound like the original releases.

but, "last night on earth"...well, DAMN!

it must have been around a while, the opening line is "down south where elvis is king and jesus is lord..."

"elvis is king and jesus is lord" was one of the "working titles" for ohio. maybe it's an outtake from those sessions. great song...
WalrusOct9
Hmmm..."Last Night On Earth" is a pretty good song. I wish they would've kept it for the next "real" record, since I think they could use another upbeat-sounding track like "Show Me" or "Lookin' Forward."

"Like A Radio" is a reeeeallly old song...kind of odd it's on the compilation, let alone their Myspace, but it's fun to hear a very young OTR on their first album. Vocally, Karin's come a long way, IMO. smile.gif She sounds good on the really early stuff, but nowhere near the confident singer she is today.
kylie jo
ok, what universe am i in?

i've refreshed, closed, signed out/back in... xmas songs.
sodanyotrnut
Ok is it me or does Sleep Baby Jane sound extra pumped??? and what about the intro and mix of Like a Radio???

Love this stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i would be very surprised, shocked if it/they ("like a radio" or "sleep baby jane") is/are on the compilation ("latter days," maybe, probably). it was never released by backporch. i think they must have just placed some random stuff up there w/an unreleased one...
sodanyotrnut
and yes...

Last Night on Earh sounds F A N T A S T I C !
kylie jo
finally. that was weird.
sodanyotrnut
Yes I do know the songs!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe it's my subwoof??? But they sound newly produced or something???? and I must admit...I did not know "Last Night on Earth" and do not know where it comes from????
sodanyotrnut
Re: Last Night on Earth...my humble (and quite possibly stupid) guess is an "outtake or b side from Ohio?

any thoughts...
sodanyotrnut
Sorry Bivester ...

you said that already...just saw it...so we agree I guess re poss Ohio out take. I think it sounds great and makes me long for some Ohio style again... well I guess I got my wish.
sodanyotrnut
Better keep an eye on Myspsce (Linford must be at the controls) now only 1 song (Last Night on Earth) and new artwork...hopefully he (or Karin) are stirring up some more for Myspace...PLEASE !!!

By the way...finally got Later Days to play on Myspace player (before it disapperared) ..nothing new there...just "Good Dog Bad Dog" version

I'm glad they put a few of the oldies but goodies on the site. I was just listening to Patience the other day. Brings back memories.

Hi Justsino

I agree with you about the vintage OtR...it really is great to pull it out every now and then and now...

I wonder when they decided to release this what's it called, unopened fireworks or something. They sure have been release-ey lately, what with the snow angels, live from nowhere, trumpet child (although that release seems to be getting pushed back further and further...) NOT that I am complaining, geez, OtR, stop making albums already... but this seems kind of whim-sy to me.

and I am glad gladderoo that there's new myspace stuff up- I was wondering where the angels were gonna go when the snow started to melt. ohmy.gif

thanks for the heads up on this... and if ya'll haven't done so, listen to "like a radio" with stereo headphones.... holy crap when the shaker came in a few bars from the beginning, it almost scared me out of my seat.... sounds fantastic.

I listened to it again, and definitely feel that Last Night On Earth deserved a better fate than to be hidden on some contractual obligation compilation. Better late than never, I guess, although it makes me wonder why it was left off Ohio, since there is about 70 minutes of unused space between the two CD's. Good tune though, it'd be nice to see them go back in this direction one day.

man, there is a lot of jumping to conclusions around here, just because they posted a few songs on myspace. nowhere does it say anything about any of these being on any (contractual obligation closedeyes.gif ) complilation or anything. and the comment about this being from the "ohio" sessions was just something i said based on the opening line of the song and something they said once about "elvis is king, jesus is lord" being a working title (one of several i might add) for "ohio" when they were recording it. why not wait for them to announce it? they post three old songs (as they were originally released) and one new one on freakin' myspace and all of this crazy speculation happens? ::sheesh:: hell, i'm just happy to hear the new song, whenever and however it got out there.

just quick question steve (not meaning to sound like a dick even though i prob do with this), do you do this same kind of freak out on the U2 boards (or toto for that matter) every time bono & co release yet another one of their (i believe at least six, several w/unreleased material so you have to buy it) greatest hits and/or compilation packages? i'm sure it's cool because they are U2 afterall & and can do no wrong, so it's ok for them to take the money and run while laughing all the way to the bank. right? i mean, IT'S U2! unsure.gif

and this sufjan ( suf::yawn:: ) clown can release a 3 (or 4 or 34, whatever) disc christmas album and a new record a month (yes, i'm being a smartass) and is considered some kind of prolific genius around here and K&L go on a little binge w/a "best of," a "fan" only release "LFN2," a christmas album and a new record over a 6 or 8 month period and catch hell for it?

and yeah, i felt really slighted with the 21 excellent tracks on "ohio" they should have done more...no wait, less...no wait, more blink.gif

as margo timmins says..."i don't get it."

copied from MySpace:

DISCOUNT FIREWORKS: A COLLECTION The music of Over the Rhine has survived for 15 years. Maybe it's time for a little mile-marker. For years our fans have told us how much they like to go through our recordings and pick and choose and put their own collections together to introduce friends to the songs. Maybe it's our turn to put together a little collection. Not a "Best Of" or anything definitive, but a good taste. A birthday cake baked from fifteen years of musical chicken scratch. The longer we've toured and recorded, the deeper we've been able to feel what an honor and privilege it is to be an American band, to have these songs occasionally rub shoulders with the songs of our musical heroes. Early on in our career, we got to open a handful of shows for Bob Dylan. He was in a fairly dark period of his life, but still, there he was in the dinner line with us backstage in Madison, Wisconsin, spooning food onto his plate as if we were all at a church carry-in dinner. We're fans first and are always thrilled when artists like Leo Kottke, or Jane Siberry, or Buddy and Julie Miller, or Ron Sexsmith, or Amy Rigby come to Cincinnati to join us in front of our hometown crowd. This is Ohio after all. We're a little off the beaten path. But what a connecting force music is. Inevitably we gather the musicians on stage and sing a few songs together at the end of the night, and it's obvious that a few thousand people wander out into the dark feeling something really good that's hard to put into words. American music is one of the few deeply communal enterprises left in this country. The first time we performed in Italy we were dumbstruck by the beauty of Tuscany, those little tucked away towns. I scribbled this line: Italy is a leather bound book. We walk on marbled endpapers beneath the glass blown night. Should we drop everything and move here? What artist doesn't wonder? But no, Italy could never have given the world Johnny Cash. It's the great contradictions of America that interest us, the wealth and poverty, the generosity and greed, the naivety and brutality, the optimism and superstition. So much music in the world that could only have happened in America! Our jazz and blues musicians, our songwriters, black gospel, bluegrass and soul – American music – this is some of the best, most enduring stuff we've given the world as a nation, period. Who knows anything about the future of the recording industry? I would argue that after 15 years in the trenches on and off labels, 15 years of hanging out with people who bought tickets to our shows, bought the CD's and taped or burned copies to pass out to their friends, and then came back next time we came to town with new people who seemed to know every word to every song, and then e-mailed us to tell us they fell in love to this music, or walked down the aisle to it, or danced their first dance to it, or conceived to it, or took it to the hospital and gave birth to it, or underwent cancer treatments to it, or took it to Iraq so they could have some connection to home during a war they couldn't believe they'd somehow signed up for, or yes, some even buried their loved ones to this music – I would argue that I know as much or as little as anyone. A good song that matters to somebody will always matter. So back to these songs, back to the basics… They were the songs that we needed to write at the time. If we hadn't written them, they wouldn't exist. If you inspire someone, it doesn't matter if you're John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, or a married couple from Southern Ohio: the world got bigger, the lungs hold more air. Everyone who has truly lived has their great adventure: this music has an awful lot to do with ours so far. Happy listening, Linford Detweiler for Over the Rhine October, 2006

I think pretty much everyone on the boards bitched about the new U2 compilation. Given that everyone and their mothers has a CD burner now, something like the U2 singles album is about as necessary as the Twisted Sister Christmas record.

People were pissed because a store still charges $15 for the full CD, even though all the hardcore fans want is the two new songs. If, as Bono said in an interview, the new singles LP is geared toward new or casual fans, why put only one or two new songs on the end of it? I think Discount Fireworks is actually an overdue idea, since a lot of people bring their friends to OTR shows and those friends may be overwhelmed by the dozen albums available at the merch table, but why tack on the one "new" song at the end instead of saving it for some kind of outtakes/rarities/live album that really would be worth $15 to people who already own OTR's entire catalog? Does that make any sense? I think when you pay $15 for a CD, you should get $15 worth of new recordings...obviously the record company tactic of putting one or two new songs on a "hits" record goes back to the 70's, but that doesn't make it any less lame.

(as for Toto, there are approximately 8,000 compilation albums out there because Sony, not the band, owns the rights to their catalog and can do whatever they want with it without any regard for the band's wishes...record companies are so warm and fuzzy, huh?)

I'm not complaining at all about Ohio, it's an amazing, amazing record. Just seems odd a song like LNOE was left off given that there was plenty of room. It's too full a sound to be a DP outtake, and it doesn't fit at all with the sound of FFR, so either it was something they did recently just before Devon left (since it's him playing drums), or an Ohio outtake. Maybe K&L just didn't like the way it turned out, which happens quite a lot (hell, "Livin' On A Prayer" almost didn't get released according to Jon Bon Jovi), I just said I think it's a cool sounding song that I wish they'd have included.

People actually use MySpace? I have a MySpace page, I hate going there, which I pretty much only do to answer friend requests. Everyone is 99 years old and edited thier page with Thomas's MySpace Editor, and posts non-sequiters and random photos in the comments. And the ads!

Hey Steve,

I created my avatar in Flash. I took the album covers and played around with them and voíla... avatar.

If you want maybe I can create one for ya... just say where you got it from wink.gif I'm a graphic designer and I could use the freelance publicity biggrin.gif

Hey Justsino!

Thanks so much for the offer ...I may very well take you up on it once I learn a little bit more about Avatar. Nice of you to offer...I really like yours...and absolutely would spread the publicity here and elsewhere. I'll let you know when I am ready to enter the land of Avatar.

It's so cute to see you guys get worked up!

I wasn't able to hear the tune yet. Hopefully it'll be for sale on iTunes by itself, and I can lala.com the actual CD a few months later.

And who's to say that the track was done in time for Ohio? Was that speculation? Just because lines may have been written back then doesn't mean it was recorded. I mean, Within Without was played live the first few times I saw 'em, in 1992, before Patience came out.. But the released version was recorded with the Eve tracks. And Suitcase was from around that time as well, thought I don't think it was played live.. And heck, the line "Only God can save us now" from Changes Come became a song with that same name that's been played live a handful of times in the past few years. A killer song at that.
Yalong
Y'all are getting the name wrong. The new track was actually listed on the myspace player as "Last night on earth...", with the cut off word from the chorus being "again." "Last night on earth (again)" was the title or tag line or whatever of the '99 Taft show.

i just happened to jot down the lyrics while listening to it over and over the other night, so for those who missed it before it got yanked...

Down south where Elvis is king and Jesus is Lord
We drove just shy of forever in a ?? old Ford
Hey now don’t you think this life has grown a little absurd
He said not bad for a yankee girl destined for Betty Ford

Help me its our last night on earth again
Help me its our last night on earth again
I’ve been living this so-called life since I can’t remember when
Help me its our last night on earth again

Down in Texas where guns and guitars are the friends ??
She might feel like a spinning wheels are ?? headed west
Someone said the best we can hope for is to make a beautiful mess
And I’ve put my soul up for sale and the whole world asks could you take any less

Help me its our last night on earth again
Help me its our last night on earth again
I told Jesus he could have my heart he said what kind of shape’s it in
Help me its our last night on earth again

Down south where Elvis is king and Jesus is Lord
We played our songs in a field where they found a Civil War sword
I was singing Amazing Grace when someone yelled Freebird
I strummed? a smile to myself and said honey it’s a bitch to be ignored

Help me its our last night on earth again
Help me its our last night on earth again
I’ve been wondering my whole life how’s this gonna end
Help me its our last night on earth again

Help me its our last night on earth again
Help me its our last night on earth again

My interpretation of Roger's ??'s in bold:

Down south where Elvis is king and Jesus is Lord

Hey now don’t you think this life has grown a little absurd

Help me its our last night on earth again
Help me its our last night on earth again
I’ve been living this so-called life since I can’t remember when
Help me its our last night on earth again

Down in Texas where guns and guitars are the friends that men love best
She might feel like her spinning wheels are truly headed west
Someone said the best we can hope for is to make a beautiful mess
And I’ve put my soul up for sale and the whole world asks could you take any less

"last night on earth again" was written in the "ohio" time frame and recorded recently (per linford). the liner notes for DF show it was produced by brad jones (who also produced and played on the soon to be released "the trumpet child") and he also played bass, acoustic and electric guitar + mickey plays drums on it. so it was definitely recorded during "the trumpet child" sessions/time frame.

I do like the song-the more I hear it the more I like it--my favorite part is when Karin begins the final verse and sings "where Elvis is King and Jesus is Lord" and in the background there is a well placed twang of a pedal steel guitar. Well--Mickey Paoletta played both the pedal steel and slide guitar---great job!!! I hope they have someone playing those instruments when they come to Canal Street and do the song.

I had to come back and make another comment about OtRs Myspace site--in recent days it was redone and it looks really great--they added links to itunes for just about every major release they have --at least the ones I know about---
