i take it you haven't read the books, have you? smile.gif
Joel the Conner
nope...

I saw the first movie and did not enjoy it one bit. Honestly, I was just begging for the film to end. I saw parts of some of the others and was only slightly less disappointed. I am a huge Tolkien dweeb, and it is very hard for me sometimes to read other fantasy when (to me) it lacks the depth that Tolkien's work does. I think it was especially difficult with H.P. because it was talked up so much to me. I know the books would be very different, obviously, but it difficult for me to work up the motivation to read one of the books when my experience so far has been less than exhilarating.

Harry Potter and the Adjective Noun -and- Harry Potter and the Noun of Prepositional Phrases have been my ultimate favs in this series so far...

J.K. Whatsherface needs some serious help in title selection.

I am totally stoked.
I really am looking forward to seeing this series out to its end, whatever that end might be.

I used to ignore the Harry Potter craze. tried to read the first book long ago and was bored and didn't continue. got annoyed at folks who thought "oh, you like LotR, you probably like Harry Potter". later I saw a couple of the movies out of order and thought, hey they're kind of okay. I belong to several online knitting groups and periodically someone will knit a Harry Potter scarf or other item. (I did enjoy looking at the knits in the films and made myself a Gryffindor scarf.) my little sis got the set of books for Christmas the other year but didn't read them. finally she dug them out and really enjoyed them, so I thought it would be fun for us to watch the movies together. her interest in the series got me more interested in it. we talked about this and that and she told me what happens in the book following the last movie, and I had to read it for myself. read the others one by one and now I'm looking forward to the 7th book and the next movie.

the jkrowling website game was cool. I like little games like that.

Neither myself nor my sons have read any Harry Potter books, possibly because the overkill of the advertising made us feel like they were being crammed down our throats. Similarly, none of us saw the movie (was there more than one?). Anyway, my 16 yr old son, who's an avid reader, just said today that if anyone's looking for gift suggestions, he wouldn't mind "trying one of the Harry Potter books".

For those of you that've read some of them, do you like them all the same?

I was kinda hoping it would have been called Harry Potter Goes Ass to Mouth...

'cuz... I mean, you never go ass to mouth...

no, but the story's told in chronological order. . . .

my favorite (thus far) is probably Prizoner of Azkaban (#3)

if he read it (and enjoyed) the third novel. . .it wouldn't be too far to backtrack and read the rest. Chica started with #5 and has went back and caught up on almost everything? (you'll have to ask her. . . .GoldenDelicious) She enjoyed it quite a bit, I would guess.

They are not only told in chronological order, but were supposed to be written for readers the age corresponding to Harry's age in the book. Because of this, the books get more sophisticated as they go along (Each book is one year for Harry). I read them all when #4 came out (I happened to be working at a store that carried them and they were my breakroom friends. I have to admit I didn't like #1 until after I'd read the others. I just didn't feel connected to the characters in the first book. In #5 Harry became an incredibly whiney teenager, I wouldn't suggest anyone start there. Anywho, I'm a little stoked to find out how it all ends.

my favourite of them so far would be book 3, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

it was hard for me to get into the harry potter craze as well. i read the first book in preparation to go see the movie, and absolutely hated the book. i didn't realize that it was written for 12 year olds, and so i felt it was boring and unsophisticated. i mean, other "children's" books had still been able to capture my interest...there was just something about harry potter that i didn't like nor understand.

i finally saw the movie a year later flying home from europe. i rushed home and read all four of the books in a week, and have been hooked ever since.

i don't know if i have a favorite, though. i wanted to smack harry for being so whiny in the fifth book. the books definitely get, not only more sophisticated with age, but darker. i definitely agree that the third book would be a wonderful place to start.

and i think that the name of the seventh book is HORRIBLE! ick. but i am still excited to read it.

Ok, but seriously now, any series of books that has bands form over it, has to be worth something...

just go to any store, we can preorder it for you--- also, there is an OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE up to the tune of July 21.

guess who I'm going to the release party as? *wink wink, nudge nudge*

I never understood the whole preordering thing with HP. The last three book releases, I was hard pressed to find a retail store (ANY retail store) without a monster-size pyramid from Scholastic with the HP books. Someone at work yesterday said she's a huge HP fan, and she was laughing about the preordering thing because she's gotten all the books the day of release - all at a local supermarket.

It amazes me how people cannot deal with delayed gratification.

Well in some cases Pre-ordering can save money... I got an email from Amazon with a price of $18. Not sure if I am going to or not...but there it is...

I hear ya on that. But seriously, I bet many discount retailers will have the book for about $13 or $14 the first day it's released.

here's how it will be priced at B&N... the standard hardcover is $35, and the de-lux is $65 (these are gorgeous, silk sewn cover and everything... but way too expensive for my tastes). for the standard this is a $5 price hike from the last two HP releases.

because it will be a best-seller (it already was #1 today in sales when I checked at work) it will be 40% off, 46% off for members. so yes, that puts you around 20 bucks, give or take a few, depending on tax, if you are a B&N member, etc.

I can't speak for any of the other book retailers/walmarts/grocery stores, but you'll probably find that price to be standard/on the high end for the first few weeks anyway. hope this helps with your book budget. wink.gif
