Last I had heard it was Pink's part and I had heard Spears was interested (cringespasmbawl), but not Lohan(again, cringespasmbawl) or Scarlett, who I dig but don't see as my beloved Janis. I just happened to stumble on this on a random entertainment news site and needless to say I'm thrilled with this latest development... Go Zooey!!! Please let this be a good'un.

Deschanel Beats Spears and Lohan to Joplin Role
17 August 2006 (WENN)
Zooey Deschanel has beaten Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and Scarlett Johansson to the coveted role of Janis Joplin in the forthcoming movie biopic of the tragic singer. Pop punk Pink was originally director Penelope Spheeris' first choice to play the late rocker, but pulled out, blaming the movie's producers for turning the casting process into "some circus pop contest - who's the 'it' girl who wants to play Janis." However, Almost Famous beauty Deschanel, 26, has signed to play Joplin in The Gospel According To Janis, which starts filming in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in November. "Piece Of My Heart" hitmaker Joplin died of an heroin and alcohol overdose in a Hollywood hotel room in October 1970 at the age of 27.

I couldn't find a thread for random flim blurbs and what not, so, yeah...

that's interesting. I like her style in what I've seen of her, but she does seem to be sort of a one-character kind of actress to me (again, only seen her a very few times) and I don't know how I feel about her playing Janis. BUT... the director was high to consider ANY of those others (including Pink, whose sentiments I agree with). Britney as Janis??? it makes me doubt the quality of the final product if this director's calling the shots...

Actually, scratch that. I think Zooey's going to be great in that role (though I do still question a director who would consider any of today's pop princesses)

I hope this is still a go, I only very recently read that Zooey sang (i haven't seen Elf or The New Guy) and wrote music, and was putting out an album with M. Ward - so I youtube'd her out of curiosity... Holy Schmoly:

Peter Jackson to produce 'The Hobbit'

QUOTE
NEW YORK (AP) -- Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," a planned prequel to the blockbuster trilogy "The Lord of the Rings."

Jackson, who directed the "Rings" trilogy, will serve as executive producer for "The Hobbit." A director for the prequel films has yet to be named.

Relations between Jackson and New Line had soured after "Rings," despite a collective worldwide box office gross of nearly $3 billion -- an enormous success. The two sides nevertheless were able to reconcile, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) splitting "The Hobbit" 50/50, spokemen for both studios said Tuesday.

"I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson said in a statement. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."

Two "Hobbit" films are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, similar to how the three "Lord of the Rings" films were made. Production is set to begin in 2009 with a released planned for 2010, with the sequel scheduled for a 2011 release.

New Line Cinema is owned by Time Warner. (Time Warner is the parent company of CNN.) Sony and Comcast are among the owners of MGM

I remember when the move "Willow" came out (which I love), my ex sat there enthralled and said "If they can do THIS, they can pull off The Hobbit!" I'm amazed it took as long as it did for someone to attempt it (and that's in reference to LOTR in general).
