I was back in Dayton today--and I happened to be in the vicinity of Woodland Cemetary-one of the prettier ones I know of. Many famous Daytonians are buried here including the Wright Brothers and Erma Bombeck---

Some pretty monuments and their details:

I'm REALLY glad that I bought it. It takes awesome concert shots which my Kodak never would do. Right back at cha with your shots friend.

That's cool!! Why not sign up for a free Flickr account here. Once you do, you can upload a few photos each month. If you like it, then you can pay about $50/year for a pro account with unlimited storage space.

If you do sign up for a Flickr account and want to post the photo here, PM me, and I'll walk you through how to post photos.

Thanks for the kind words. The fireworks were a part of the opening weekend activities at our university. There will be more in Nov. during Homecoming weekend. By then, I'll have my shutter release cable and look forward to see how much better they come out using it.

I have already run up to two limitations of my new camera---1.) No way to put on a remote shutter release 2.) No hot shoe to connect a remote strobe flash unit

Oh well---it is still a great camera---maybe next year I'll move up to a true Digital SLR cam---

I was busy on Saturday doing an art show in downtown Cincinnati. While I was sitting in my booth--I took photos of the booths of fellow artists and other things--after I was done for the day-- I then set about on a photo safari-it turned out to be a perfect late afternoon and early evening to take photos--for once the front passed and a bit of rain came down--the sunset and quality of light was just amazing--in this first set of photos in this post--I was attracted by the magnificent spires of a church over in Covington---

Historical Marker for this incredible church

The twin spires

Spires and Cupola

Some of the details of the church

Other views of the cupola

Close up detail of one of the spires focusing on an arch with its capstone

An arch on a lower section of the building, also with a prominent capstone

I also took some pretty good night time shots of "Cincy After Dark"--here are some faves--I will post up some more later along with some photos I took at the art show and of some cool things I found in the historic, riverfront section of Covington..

The Reds were in town--they were host to the Florida Marlins and the old Red Legs were not kind hosts--they had a shut out going for awhile and did win the game:

Just one more post before I crash and burn:

The Bengals' Paul Brown Stadium--dark for now, but football is about ready to get underway

LazyAsSin
I went to the Minnesota State Fair yesterday with some friends and thought I'd share some photos. They are by no means artsy, but just fun! Things I learned about the fair: almost anything you want to eat can be fried and placed on a stick, and be careful of Spiderman...

Deep fried Snickers bar, anyone?

This must be the result of a technological partnership between 3M and Hormel... (That's casserole to you non-Minnesotans...)

The best corn you will ever eat...

Please don't harass the livestock...

Spiderman, Spiderman, everybody loves (and is loved by) Spiderman...
mpgarr
Hey Lazy--these are some great and fun photos--thanks for sharing them---it looks like y'all had a good time at the fair.

This next set of photos are some hightlights of a self-guided photo safari tour of the historic section of Covington, KY--I just love the details on old house that have so much character and are pieces of history---

I love old, stained stone and brick walls---several incredible ones can be found in this neighborhood:

Some other architectural details:

Real building stars (part of earthquake protection--these homes suffered damage in the New Madrid fault earthquake back in the late 19th Century:

A cupola capping a grand old house:

This photo I call: "The 19th Century meets the 21st!" The building rising in the background is The Ascent condominum high rise now nearing completion in the modern section of Covington--the building was designed by Daniel Liebschin-the same architect who is designing the "Freedom Tower" that will replace the WTC towers in Manhattan--also---an unobstructed view of the tower---oh BTW--for a about four mill or so I think I heard it was--you can still buy the Penthouse unit--which makes up like three of the top floors of the bulding---a steal and you get a nice view of the river and of the Cincinnati skyline!!

mpgarr
To conclude this little tour of the historic preservation district of Covington---I love it--it kind of reminds me of places like Savannah, Charleston, Mobile and New Orleans---I found this sad and forlorn old Grand Dame of a home--The Carneal House--the door was open wide and I did not see anyone around--I was tempted to walk in to see how the outside of this home is since her exterior has seen better days. I hope that she is now in the hands of either a developer or owner who is going to give this home the TLC it so richly deserves:

This lovely home is very close to the Carneal House--she has been rehabbed and given a new lease on life---

I was thinking---with the shabby state of repair of both the house and its yard--the Carneal House sort of reminds me of a setting for an Ann Rice novel!!

Another fine release by another fine artist----I love the acoustic version of "Up in Indiana" best of the two and really love "I Will Rise Up/Ain't No More Cane"------this CD along with Trumpet Child and Los Lobos "The Town and The City" are burning up my CD players right now....

Also on the new Lyle Lovett--I love this refrain---"Saint Mother Maria watch over us please as we wander around this dangerous world...thank Mother Maria, there's nothing so sweet as the undying love of a South Texas girl....

Today was absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! So, I decided to just drive without knowing where I was going to end up. Where I landed was in the Cannelburg, IN area which is richly populated with plain folks. What follows are some scenes from this afternoon/evening.

Old and New

Buggy1
I actually managed this one through the windshield. I didn't realize the folks would come out so good. I NEVER take photos of the plain folks as they prefer, but this shot is too good to delete.

Buggy3
This was taken outside a place called Dinky's. Every Fri. night the place is PACKED, and you can buy anything from buggys, to modern farm equipment, to animals of all sorts, to quilts and other sundry items. I've yet to make it to an auction, but one Fri. night I swear I will. What a photo op!

Family
Gotta love using the old tractor seat for the bicycle seat!

Lake, Ruritan Park, Montgomery, IN
This weekend is the Turkey Trot Festival which culminates with the turkey races on Mon. I believe. Honest ... real turkey races! The park is PACKED full of RVs complete with inflatable turkeys in their 'yards!'

Skywalker
Don't think I'd want that job!

Thanks for the kind words. Maysville, IN. Love the Prine quote. BTW, I'm really hoping that he plays Evansville sometime this year. I have yet to see him and really, really want to see him bad.

I did kind of figure that the Maysville you took those photos had to be in Indiana--going to Maysville, Ky would have been a pretty long trek just to take some photos--maybe one of these days--I will head up river and take some photos of Maysville, KY

I think its cool that there are still barns around your area that still have "See Rock City" signs painted on them---they were quite a piece of Americana at one time---but "progress came and took its toll" and the barn sign went the way of the carrier pidgeon---- thanks for sharing the photo of the barn Cher---

One of the newspapers I worked for was in a rural county and so I did lots of stories on things relating to agriculture--one of the fun things I got to do was to take part in a seminar series for the "Barn Again" program--a national program designed to save old timey barns from the oblivion that so many have seen.
Today-the farmers bulid "utility buidlings" that house their livestock, equipment, etc. and the old barn goes by the wayside in so many cases- it becomes an economic decision to simply let a barn rot away----the Barn Again program encourages farmers to use their barns for some purposes hopefully for something ag related or for other uses like a gift shop and the like. If they don't want the barn anymore-- then the goal is to have the farmers allow a contractor to come in to take the barn down so that at least pieces of the barn can be used again is some fashion--like building homes. -- So many of the old barns have wonderful construction with beams the size and quality we will never see again.

I love to see barns still being used, preserved and protected---barns--like the "See Rock City" sings themselves, are unfortunately a part of a vanishing part of America---I am really glad to see this barn still standing with its sign still readily visible---
