LOVE this photo, Kylie! The angle, the vignetting, the mystery (who are they and what are they waiting for??), the writing on the floor... Phenominal.

A photographer went to a dinner party where he showed many of his photographs. The lady of the house said, "Those are very nice pictures - you must have a great camera". He said nothing, but when leaving for home offered the following compliment to the lady of the house... "The meal was very nice, you must have great pots and pans."

ok, i think i've got everything up, i probably still need to do a little editing down, but a representation of everything i have is now up there. while some aren't up to the standards i'd like, i decided to post at least something from each show i had photos from (ok, i still have the 3 in-store shows 1 @ border's in atlanta, 2 from joseph-beth in cinti, i haven't decided yet), sort of for archival/historical purposes i guess.

43 OtR's shows, 64 concerts. take a peek if you are so inclined: http://picasaweb.google.com/bivester

I am still always completely awed by being able to look down at clouds, and always request a window seat when I fly. Great shots, Tina!

Kylie, your latest pics are killer - nice work with the vignetting!

I'm with Keith on these Tina. It's so cool to see them from the other side. Last time I saw clouds like that was a lot of years ago. I flew recently, but it was dark. Boo.......

Great shots! Reminded me of that flight to Cali 20 years ago. Saw clouds like that and the Grand Canyon from 30k feet..... amazing.

Tina - they ARE great shots. I've never been lucky enough to get cloud shots when flying. Maybe some day.

Taken with the OLY SP-550UZ.

I was on my way downtown this evening to see if there was anything to be photographed on Main St. As I was sitting at the stop light, I heard sirens and through the rear view mirror saw a police car barreling down upon me. As soon as the light changed, I turned and pulled over in case he was going the same direction. Sure enough ... he was, and then I smelled smoke and saw it ... a huge black plume. So, I got as close as I dared and began snapping away. Here are a few:

Firee

Fire2

Fire8

Fire15

Fire14

It was an auto detailing shop here in Vincennes. I was told that they were doing some welding; there was a spark which ignited 2 oxygen tanks, and well, you can see the result. Good thing is that no one was hurt. The fire dept. tried foam and then water and ended up just letting it burn itself out.

I was there not long after the fire started, and it was pretty much gone when I left. Maybe 15-20 minutes tops. Fast, fast fire.

Cher,

I love this pic. It took me a second to see the cart in the background on its side. Great title.

OK... this isnt an artistic pic or anything. It's a pic of a squirrel who lives in my backyard. We noticed him for his unique tooth. We have appropriately named him Chompy. He comes around to visit us often.

cher, if you cropped the top of this a bit, along the line of weeds, removing the the building and cars (and whatever that is in the upper right corner) at the top of the frame, (imho) it would be a much stronger image. they are just an unnecessary distraction that pulls your eye away from the subject.

hope you don't mind the critique, just my two cents worth...

Bill - thanks for the feeback. I thought about cropping the photo a bit as well but liked the weedy look. I didn't like the hotel or the cars either. You're right ... it looks better cropped. However, for framing purposes, the other would work because the parts I don't want shown can be matted out.

KJ, you are really doing some fantastic work. I hope you shared those photos with whichever band you saw. Honestly, they are fantastic. And Jeanne, the kittens are way cute!
kylie jo
Thanks guys. So much. I'm not exactly sure what band it was... whoever was coming on after OtR later that nite. It may have been Jake Speed(his look is so inspiring for pictures) and the Freddies. Soon after I took those photos... Paul Patterson(who played with OtR) starting jamming on his violin with the other guy playing fiddle. It was neat-o. I wanted to take a picture so badly. smile.gif

Justina... I love the one of the window... i think I like the colour better... the b/w looks like a drawing!! very neat. Cool pictures of the boats, too.

Ahhh.. ok. I was not sure what OLY was.

Here's what mine is..

Here are the specs.

I recently discovered using the RAW setting while I was in Colorado. I thought it was the perfect setting to get good shots and play around. I was right. I'm digging my camera more now.

I think you will really like using RAW. You wont be restricted to a 72dpi Jpeg. You'll be able to make very high quality prints from the RAW (of course, you will need Photoshop to be able to work with the RAW images.)

Have fun!

great, great photos everyone.
i love this thread. thanks for sharing them everyone.

now i've got a camera question. right now i've got this little canon sd-400, small but powerful and takes great pictures, but i love to
take lots of closeups of flowers (someday i may make a book of wildflowers i'll have painted or drawn). before the digital world,
i had (still have) a pentax k1000 35mm, with so many various zooming lenses and filters and all, that i used to take all my closeups
any recommendations on a good digital camera similar to my old pentax?
thanks

hell, there aren't even any film cameras left like those old k-1000's kent. those things were real workhorses, classics. fully manual, just a very simple "match the needle" metering system, very reasonable in price, durable, great damn cameras for the bucks. you're never gonna find anything like that in the electronic, digital world.

i just looked, pentax does have several digital SLR's (starting @ about $500) that will accept your "k-mount" lenses "w/some restrictions"

Agreed, Bill.
I still have my K-1000 that my parents got for me in high school. In fact, I just took a b&w photography class this spring semester and no digital cameras were allowed, only 35mm cameras. Considering most of the students in the class were traditional aged students they did not have 35mm cameras, only digitals. They had to go to Ebay to buy cameras for the class.

Anyway, not to promote any specific camera, BUT, my camera does have a feature for "flowers". Most good quality digital cameras have it. Its most commonly known as the macro setting. Works very well for flower photos.

yeah, mine has the macro for flowers too, and it does do a good job on the flowers, as you can see in the gardening and flowers threads the past year, but i tell you nothing beats the close-ups that pentax can take. my old neighbors used to think i was crazy crawling around on my hands and knees to snap a shot of a 1/2 inch flower.
was just wondering if there was anything digitally similar to it.

I know that some folks at the Kodak forum where I post have macro sets that they use on their digis. They may have to purchase adapter rings to use them, but they really have great luck with them. I'm not familiar with the sd400, so I'm not sure that a macro set would be available to use with yours. You might check the Canon site and see.

Road Trip
Back story: Have you noticed a trend of huge plastic stars popping up on the sides of folks' homes? In our community, it's HUGE, and for some reason they annoy the crap out of me. So, I decided to turn an annoyance into art and have begun a new portfolio that I'm tenatively calling "Seeing Stars in Vincennes, IN." Last night I was cruising the streets of our fair city in search of said stars when I stumbled upon this eclectic shot. smile.gif

When I first noticed this woman, she was sitting in a similar position. However, she sat up and watched and man and young boy who I took to be her child and husband as they were playing nearby. I really wanted a shot of her in this position, and my patience paid off as she complied. Although I still feel a bit voyeuristic, I'm getting a bit braver about intruding into people's lives.

Some incredible thunderheads last night, taken from the deck looking north, just before we left for a concert.
These were about 40 miles away, had the tops of the clouds at around 35,000-40,000 feet and were,
at the time of the photo, dropping 3" to baseball size hail. Fortunately, for us, they were headed east.
