But seriously, these photos are really exciting and fun.

One suggestion though - the text on the "sugar" photo is really hard to read. Would it be easier to read if it overlayed the bottom half of the design?

Time for some more posts of some recent photos:

A few photos of some people at an equestrian competion, just having fun afterward riding their horses in an outdoor arena on a nice fall day---and some photos of an old warehouse building, in the next post--some photos of an abandoned train station in a small Ohio rural place called Midland---

mpgarr
I don't know why--but for some reason---old abandoned places interest me--they most certainly capture my imagination----the old train depot and unused railroad tracks at Midland, Ohio

The next to the last photo-the one of the power pole--has something of interest to me--those great old glass insulators that used to be on all power poles--I am surprised that this pole--being so close to town---still has quite a few of those----most of them were stripped years ago from the poles and made their way into antique shops and flea markets--I have a nice collection of them----I wish I had a nice tall ladder to snatch those!!

I'm taking that under consideration and will play around with it some more. Thanks, Adriana.

Wonderful photos, Michael! Thanks for sharing them. I know the feeling you're writing of. Something simply tugs at me whenever I come across old abandoned places like that. I was struck also by the presence of the blue insulators. Sure don't find them around here very often either.

Thanks! Yup, Picnik can be addictive. I'm not usually into much photo processing, but it's an easy, easy way to convert photos into one-of-a-kind cards for family, friends, and staff.

Hi Cher. It definitely stands out now! I like the color combination. It reminds me of Halloween.

Some photos from a little bit of bushwhacking on a gorgeous Indian Summer Day in and around Cincy, and Northern Kentucky:

The skyine of downtown Cincy taken from the city's westside:

Underway on the Anderson Ferry heading towards the Kentucky shore of the Ohio River:

Harley's parked along the road in Rabbit Hash, KY

Some of the remaining leaf color in the area:

A traditional style music group performs the weekly Sunday show inside the Rabbit Hash General Store:

A sample of some of the very cool things to be found in this unique example of Americana---the store dates back to 1831 and has been in continous operation since that time. These are some ladies western style boots made by a local artist in the Rabbit Hash, KY area:

For Cher----an long abandoned barn serves as a billboard marking the way to a trailer park located along the banks of the Ohio River:

A lone sailor motors his boat down the river to points south and warm for the winter---he has taken his mast down to make sure he can clear some of the bridges he will pass along the route south either down the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway or on down the mighty Mississip

Motoring into the sunset:

Michael - looks like it definately was a wonderful day for a drive. Thanks for a lovely series of shots ... especially the barn.

Last spring during the primary race, I took this photo:

Race.

The posters were located in of one of the plate glass windows and the front door of the Obama headquarters located on Main St. here in Vincennes. The headquarters was vandalized a few days after I shot this.

Anyway, I used this photo and a few others and made a 20 X 30" photo collage and along with the following JFK quote to create a poster.

"Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future."

Now, here's where the story gets somewhat humorous. I mailed it to Obama's Chicago Campaign Headquarters thinking that they might like it for their walls. I included a letter explaining that it was to be considered for the headquarters and not for Obama himself nor was I asking for him to sign it to be returned to me. Well, it was returned to me and unopened at that. I just shrugged a put it to the side. This fall I donated it to the Democratic Headquarters here in town where it was promptly displayed on the wall easily seen from the street.

Today, I received a call from an attorney in Bicknell, IN who wanted to know if I had any more of the posters as he wants to purchase at least 4 and wants them signed. Seems that, Ally, the Obama campaign manager assigned to Knox Co. took the original back to Chicago with her!

So, looks like I'll be making more copies, but first I'll be speaking to that attorney about copyright issues over the JFK quote.

After doing some Veteran's Day events---I took some time in Woodlawn Cemetery in Dayton---it is a very pretty place--even though the day was not so nice--there were still a few trees with some pretty leaves with lots of color---I also set the camera to the "warm" mode--a color setting that amped up the color---with the exception of the last photo.

I was just getting pretty proficient with the Panasonic Lumix---but I decided I needed to make the jump to a DSLR-so after trying to wade through all the offerings out there----I decided on "just" a Nikon D40---I figure this camera is more than good enough to get the hang of working with a digital SLR camera and will keep me for a few years--I went out and rode the nearby countryside on a gorgeous day--winding up in another cemetery---somehow I am drawn to them----they do have a special and comforting sort of feeling--especially in this season for some reason.

These are not exactly all that great of photos--like I said---I just put the camera in auto function and went out to get the feel of how things work---the first shot is of one of the antique stores in Waynesville---like the sign says--only 32 DAYS till Christmas, if you can believe that!! As far as the snow falling in your one photo, Cher--we have had a slight accumulation already too.

A Triptrych of Gerbers

These were all fiddled with in Picnik. They were originally b&w then I cross processed, faded and softened them, added a bit of grain, and finally added a yellowish matte to them. Next, I assembled them as a collage here.

All my growing up years, I never, ever remember seeing my father wear his wedding band. It was safely tucked away in my mother's jewelry box ... one of those cheap pink 'satin' boxes with a diary lock and key, but it was beautiful AND romantic in my child's eyes. I remember when I was a little girl asking to see it, and mom would take it out and tell me the story of why it was there instead of on dad's finger. He was in construction and almost lost his ring finger in an accident, and that was the last day he wore the ring. It was then put in the jewelry box for safe keeping. I suppose it's still there. Anyway, my dad remarried last summer, and I'll not forget the small jolt I got the first time I saw him wearing his wedding band. I must admit that it hurt for a bit. I was sad for my mom (I'm not sure why, or if that's really who I was sad for) perhaps it's just the memory of him never wearing the band that matched mom's set that saddened me. Anyway, I'm happy for him because he wears this one so proudly in all its simplicity.

Thanks, Trudes, I was hoping you would see this one. Afterall, it's you I have to thank for waking me up to the beauty of the hands of the elderly. I'll not forget that lovely photo of your mother's hands, so reminiscent of a photo I have of Georgia O'Keeffee's.

Been playing around with Picnik even more here lately. These started out as b&w single photos and ended up as you see them here:

Alchemy

as a triptych. As for the title of the collage, it comes from changing the b&w (lead) into gold. The old alchemists' tale.

I have a question for the photo buffs here on the Orchard. If you had to choose between a Nikon D90 and a Canon 40D, which would you choose or is there another camera in this class that I should look at? I've had Canons in the past and currently shoot with a Olympus digital. This will be my first digital SLR. I've pulled the specifications for both models and created a spreadsheet with a side by side comparison. The Nikon is slightly better in most categories except that the Canon can shoot up to 6.5 frames per second, whereas the Nikon is only 4.5 fps. I'm thinking that 4.5 is good enough, but I'm not a Pro either...

I have noted that accessories for the Nikon are more expensive than Canon.

Any information will be appreciated.

nikon.

nikon is hands down, the best japanese camera eqpt on the market. canon is "good" stuff and got a real headstart in the digital arena and does offer a lot fo features for the $, but nikon is better gear by far, with far superior optics.

and the d90 is a very sweet camera. personally, i'm lusting over a d300, but will probably end up buying a d90 @ some point in the near future.
