Full Version: Spring Poster Giveaway
OverTheRhine.COM -- Orchard > Over The Rhine > Over The Rhine General Chatter
reno
Hey everybody. You've all said some very nice things about the poster and I appreciate it greatly. It means a lot to me.
So I thought I'd give one away.
There are 8 references to OtR or one of their songs in the poster, and while many of them have been stated there are a few that have not.
The first person that can correctly tell me what each of them are will have a poster tubed up and shipped their way.
The tricky part is this: I'm sure much of the image can be explained with a lyric or two, the idea here, I guess, is to figure out what I was thinking. Pretty random I know, but they're all pretty obvious (meaning if you see it there's only one or two things it could be).
But to be fair I'm not going to post the giant jpeg until 6:45 EST to give people a little while.
There IS a tricky one that I'll give a hint for when I post the jpeg url.
I'll have the final say, obviously, depending on the accuracy of the answers
Does all that sound cool?

(DustyVolume you'll be able to see the license plate)

thanks again for your kind words and inquiries.

Here are my guesses. Not sure I am supposed to respond "in public" like this but someone will sure win quick this way!

1. Firefly's (referring to the Drunkards Prayer song)
2. Folded note in a tattered coat (from the song Lifelong Fling)
3. The Farm in the back referring to Nowhere Farm
4. "Sweet Intoxication" Ale from the lyric from the song "Drunkards Prayer" and name of the tour
5. The bottle labeled "Sure Defeat" referring to the lyric " I would drink from a bottle labeled Sure Defeat" from the song Poughkeepsie
6. The giant moon in the poster referring to the lyric "The moon blind-sided the sky again" from the song Lifelong Fling
7. The license plate that reads "2 DMN JU-C"
8. HINT: check Linford's most recent letter: The tree in the poster looking like what Linford describes in his letter: "the silvery limbs of the old maples rouged with fuzzy buds"

Do I win?! Do I win?! Do I win?!

cool contest!
I know I don't have the story but I'll give you what I've got. smile.gif

the cherry or apple trees in bloom
I still can't figure out the car. it's not up on blocks. so for now I'll have to stick with the idea of "with two eyes you lift yourself up". then there's the lyric "in the taillights so much hindsight", but these are headlights...so foresight, maybe? or a tunnel of light like the 7-11?
I want you to be my love 'neath the moon and the stars above.
the stars...so cruel and pretty...
maybe the guy is a drunkard and disreputed fellow. or the savior who tripped and fell.
he was drinking from the bottle of sure defeat, and is probably praying right at that moment.
he wrote down the dream, folded the note, slipped it in the pocket of his tattered coat...
he's also circling, or spinning around. but maybe not quite like a carnaval troubadour.
his hands are empty. (God, I've been naive.)
that must be a 40-acre farm we can call our own.
fireflies in the night sky.
maybe the full moon is leering.

I don't get the too damn juicy reference.

the poster is the story you tried to tell. and I'm entertaining visions of a
lucid nature. smile.gif

Yalong posted his answers last night in PM form, but didn't quite get them all.
to keep it all here (so everyone can see, I guess) I'll post his most recent replies:

1. "too damn juicy" (dave foreman)
2. "a bottle labled 'sure defeat'"
3. firefly
4. Nowhere Farm
5. "sweet intoxication"
6. "wrote down a dream, folded the note, slipped it in the pocket of my tattered coat"
7. "'neath the moon and stars above" (if that's not one of them, it should be)
8. Cherry blossoms? Their prominence and your hint are throwing me.

And I'll tell everyone what I told him.
Lifelong Fling is indeed one of them, but the note and moon are together in that respect.

So there are just two more, and they're the trickier of the 8.
okay.

I don't get the too damn juicy reference.

"too damn juicy" is karin's nickname for their sound tech/engineer, friend and all around good guy, dave foreman. the name has kind of stuck, and lately he is also frequently referred to as "TDJ" or simply "juicy".

linford & "too damn juicy"

Here is my revised list:

1. Firefly's (referring to the Drunkards Prayer song)
2. Folded note in a tattered coat and the giant moon in the poster referring to the lyrics from Lifelong Fling
6. “In to the oak tree scared sacred with moonlight” from Mary’s Waltz
7. The license plate that reads "2 DMN JU-C" (Dave Foreman)
8. HINT: check Linford's most recent letter: The tree in the poster looking like what Linford describes in his letter: "the silvery limbs of the old maples rouged with fuzzy buds" and "the apple tree in the front yard is waving around in the wind like a big calico dress stealing the show this year - a riot of white blossoms."
stormydawn
okay, i doubt there'll be any posters left by the atlanta show, so here goes...

1. fireflies - firefly
2. a bottle labeled sure defeat - poughkeepsie
3. sweet intoxication
4. 2 dmn ju-c is dave foreman
5. nowhere farm
6. references to lifelong fling (folded note in tattered coat and the giant moon)
7. i keep thinking of the song go down easy when i see the car (take the slow curve of a backroad...drive until i remember how to feel) and also it looks like the design of it might be taken from the picture of the old car, is it a studebaker?, parked in the snow from the new good dog bad dog (by new i mean the reissue on back porch)
8. the tree: i think it's a combo of the cherry tree blossoms, the apple tree in the front yard waving around in the wind like a big calico dress stealing the show this year - a riot of white blossoms and the trees in the park that looked like they were fertilized with fairytales (and perhaps also the ones as big as the farm house back home, maybe not, though)

hey everyone.
well no one's got it yet. I think the last 2 are maybe trickier than I thought. Sorry about that.
I'll give out a hint(s) in a day or two, after everyone has had a chance to see the contest.

the first 6 are pretty well figured out, so I'll post them:

1. Fireflies. Obviously from "Firefly"
2. 2 DMN JU-C, yes, Dave the man
3. The farmhouse a nod to Nowhere Farm
4. Sure Defeat from Poughkeepsie
5. Sweet Intoxication, the name of the tour, and from Drunkard's Prayer
6. Both the note in the tattered coat and the moon from Lifelong Fling. The last 2 months for some reason I can't get enough of Lifelong Sunshine, so that was the first one I thought to put in there. The note itself says "I dreamt---..." and below that it says "The moon bli---"

So it's 7 and 8...
if no one's found them after the weekend I'll give up some hints...
I'm glad everyone is enjoying this.
thanks again everyone.

At the top above the moon - "Orion's sword at an odd angle."

Grasping at straws - The featherless cap from Birds?
kylie jo
I have a guess about one of the last two...

is it the 'sexy cocktail-hour-stubble' from Trouble?

And maybe 'Spinning'?
greyghost
I am going to add these guesses for the last two missing allusions

7. the moon is literally a Paper Moon
8. and the car is a Pontiac Chieftan? (nickname the Indian) and Linford in his letter was talking about seeing the Worlds Fastest Indian - or the car has something to do with a bird nest that linford was talking about in the letter

d'oh! how did everybody but kylie miss that one?
reno
Well, it looks like all the secrets have been figured out, and since I'm not going to make someone figure out which ones are right and compile them all into one list, I'm going to give out a poster to the two people that figured out the last two, the trickiest of the 8, within about 45 minutes of each other. The last two hidden pieces to the poster were
-the stubble on the fella's face, a nod to "trouble" and yes, -the constellation "orion" tucked in the upper right hand corner, a nod to OtR's trip to New Zealand, and Linford's mention of it.

I thank everyone for playing along. Hope everyone enjoyed it. If you don't get a poster sometime along the tour I will have a handful once it's over to sell off. I'll email everyone that posted closer to time to see if they still want one.

Thank you all again. This is a great community of folks.

SO, CONTEST OFFICIALLY CLOSED

Wow, that was really fun to read, and to see the sweet, clever references in the simply awesome poster. I love it - thanks!

I have to say, even though I know this wasn't part of it all, the car with its headlights totally reminded me of Karin's big story from the Christmas show: seeing this abandoned car in their field at night, freaking out and calling the police - only to find out that those were Christmas lights, ma'am. The mysterious car in the open air at night...

Really beautiful poster.

there was some speculation at our midnight hamburger raid on arthur's after the crossroads show by scott (OtR's merch guy), dave (TDJ) and clinton (casino/reno) that the airborn car w/the 2 DMN JU-C plates was a reference to dave's driving skills. after a couple of trips across the medians, etc, karin has forbidden him from driving on future trips. i think he scares her. clinton said nope, that was just a coincidence or maybe karin just channeled her fears...

I totally thoght that too! I can just see Karin on stage making that exaggerated motion of pulling the curtains back and watching the lights like the police dispatcher told her to do. It was HILARIOUS!

And I personally think that guy with the stubble is Shakey Jake Lewis (first incarnation) on his way back to Nowhere Farm, where he lived at the time, after a long night of blues playin' and honky tonkin'... And since this was undoubtedly back in the forties, that car was surely one of his muses. Pro'ly even the inspiration for his signature song and fan favourite: "MMM MMM MMM, Too Damn Juicy." I know it's one of mine at least... biggrin.gif
