Just in case you missed it by bookmarking the home page rather than the index page, there is a sweet concert poster at the straight overtherhine.com url.
I went to the design firm web site that created the poster but it's not for sale currently. I am all over this once it goes on sale! Love that they (and/or the record company) are investing their money in creating these promotional posters.
Anyone know the meaning behind this illustration?

Our own Casino, is the man behind the ink. He's one of the best poster artists I have ever seen. For me at least, his images evoke such strong emotion, that I can't accurately describe them. Like OTR does musically.
This poster will be free for the grabbing at one of the shows on this tour, or it will definitely be up for sale in more pristine quality on his website after the tour is over.

casino sent me the link below to his blog that shows how this poster "came to be", pretty cool process. great poster.
http://www.galaxyreno.com/blog/with only 300 printed, 100 going to 21 clubs (not even 5 per club) for "promo" purposes, i wouldn't hold my breath on "free for the grabbing" concept. and if they are selling them (the 200 prints left), that wouldn't even be 10 per show in sales at the show. so i wouldn't bet on it "definitely" being available on the website after the tour is over.
if you get a chance to grab one, you might wanna. just sayin'

you're all very kind, thank you. I certainly had a great time doing it.
so yes, I have only a very small handful and won't release those until after OTR has finished with the tour (one of the rules set forth by the gigposter world to keep the money going into the band's hands). But I actually kept fewer than normal in the hopes that they'd be able to sell more at the shows.
Not only that, but the club copies are the 100 worst of the run, and are stamped "for promotional use only", again, to drive sales to the band.
So bivester speaks wisely, as usual. If you're at a show and think maybe I'll get one after the tour has wrapped, it may not be as easy as just picking one up there...
Cool. thanks again for all the kind words. I am internetly blushing.

I just found out that they are going to do another printing of the poster on this tour so that they won't run out, and also there is going to be a SALE on the poster for a mere $5 in a couple months, so it is actually advisable to NOT pick up a poster ON the tour, but WAIT until after the tour is over. that way you will save lots of money, and Keith and I can have a good shot at grabbing one of these at the NY show without them running out before then!

I e-mailed Casino/Reno with my gushing compliments and asked him about the inspiration behind the poster. This is what he wrote:
"I just get some visual elements in mind that I feel are very OTR and put 'em together to tell a story, albeit somewhat odd....there ARE however about 8-9 OTR specific little things throughout the poster. when you get one in LA you'll be able to see it close and figure them out."
Do you guys spot the 8-9 different things? I see Firefly's right away. Anything else y'all can catch?

Has OTR ever played in Detroit? I know they do the Ark every year but in six years of being a fan I don't think I've ever seen them actually play a show in or near Detroit. I saw them at the Ark in the summer of 2000 but I think they've only done Michigan on the Christmas tours since then...maybe it's time to move.
(best thing I ever did...seeing INXS, the Charlatans, and Imogen Heap this week, none of which have MI tourdates...maybe there just aren't audiences there anymore, who knows)

why in bloody hell would they want to play in godforsaken detroit when one of the coolest little towns in the midwest is just an hour away? I like them playing Ann Arbor. To those who have purchased-
I was out of tubes and ordered a bunch last week. They were set to be delivered tuesday but I found out today that they were trying to deliver to my old address (even though I had supplied the correct address in my order).
Long story short, I will have the tubes Monday and will package these up and mail them that very day.

Sorry to bring this thread up from the deceased thread cemetary, but does anyone have any advice on frames?
The poster is 17x24...which is weird since I can't find any frames that size.
Basically I want this:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/08046900But...in a 17x24 frame. (and a couple of 22x34 ones too, while we're at it) Just the clear frame you can slide the poster in and clip it...I don't have money for big fancy frames, since I have 9 or 10 things I'd like to frame, one of which being the Hem/OTR poster I've been holding on to for a year or so.
I've checked stores and those weird Michaels craft stores and whatnot...can't really find anything like that. Anyone know what I'm talking about or where to find it?
bivester
Aug 20 2007, 09:45 PM
several options steve, you can buy a nice 18x24 black wooden frame @ hobby lobby or target for about $25-30, then use black matte board behind the poster (hobby lobby or michael's sells it about $5 per sheet for nice archival board). looks pretty nice, i have done that w/a few of clinton's posters. or you can buy the assemble yourself metal frames from michaels, etc. just buy a set of 17" and a set of 24" and all you need is a screwdriver, they usually come in silver, gold, black and charcoal (my favorite, not "silver, not "black"). and a hint to save big bucks, go to lowe's or a hardware store for the glass rather than an art or frame store, it'll cost you about a third of the price and they'll cut it to size for free. you should be able to frame it this way for $25-30 also, less if you catch them on sale.
ps: if you have hobby lobby's in your area, watch their ads...about once every 5-6 weeks they run 1/2 on frames. go and stock up when they do.

there are 18x24 clip-it frames, but that leaves a 1" opening along the side or 1/2" on each side. what i did was buy those metal frames that come in packets (2 per packet), 1-17" one and 1-24" one (usually colors are silver, gold, or black) and went to the hardware store for a piece of glass which they cut to size for me. you should be able to get michaels coupons for 40% off in the paper each sunday to knock off some of the price of the frame pieces. then you just screw down the corner with a clip and you have it. not that expensive and looks nice. you can get 18x24" clip frames at target too, but they have a plastic covering and not glass, which i prefer over any artwork, especially if its signed in sharpie, as there are some plastics that will react with the sharpie signing.
edit- yeah, what bill said
reno
Aug 21 2007, 12:21 AM
by replying to this I am in no way endorsing or encouraging the framing of my work.
that said I will add this-
bill and kent, as always, speak wonderfully wise words
if you wanted to take it all a step further you can go here--->
http://americanframe.com/you can, not unlike walking into michael's, choose the exact size of your frame
picking something with a nice profile (up to personal preference of course) you can give the piece a presence it lacks as just paper
something like this:
http://americanframe.com/catalog/collection.html?col=Basics(I'm partial to the 1 5/8th black matte)
of course, this will cost a little bit, but it's wood and it comes assembled. pretty awesome
a few things to keep in mind
1. glass is important if at any point in time during the course of the day the piece is in sunlight (perhaps through a window, obviously)- if it IS hit by sunlight over time it will FADE like crazy. it's water based ink- keep it under UV protected glass if this is the case (michael's carries several degrees of UV glass)
2. be careful if you plan on not matting the piece because direct glass to poster contact can cause problems. again, water based...
it may NOT. but if ya get a little humidity in there, glass pushed down on top of the poster it could create troubles...I dunno?
matting and these crazy things called spacers are ways to avoid this.
ok
Good luck! And thanks for thinking it's cool enough to hang where you can see it often.
katherine
Aug 21 2007, 12:54 PM
It cost me $90 to get the otr/hem poster framed at Michaels, and that was with the cheapest frame and a 50% off coupon. Craziness. Maybe I'll try the black paper backing with the larger frame for the old-man-and-the-piano one that is currently languishing in the box due to the prohibitive cost. Or maybe from now on the posters should just be standard sizes!!

Thanks for your advice...someday when I have money I'd like to put it in a real frame. Right now I'm just hoping to find something inexpensive that's actually the right size for the dozen-odd things I'd like to put in frames. I'm a guy, I don't care what it looks like, the clip frames are great, its just no one seems to sell them in anything other than 1 or 2 different sizes. Are there any online stores that might have that kind of thing? Like, have more of a selection of sizes than you could find in a physical store?
kab
Aug 21 2007, 06:50 PM
steve, i got a cheap frame from target and bought a matte off of ebay. i originally took it to michaels but -- like you and unlike katherine -- i wasn't willing to spend so much for it. i probably spent a total of $45 for it.
