There have been quite a few tabs for various songs (OtR and otherwise) thrown around here of late. If you have a tab/sheet music that's not available at the 1,563,937 tab sites out there (almost anything by OtR), please feel free to post them here!

Don't cry Carrie! biggrin.gif Yes, the Rain tab should be very close. I just discovered Patty Griffin recently and was drawn in by that song. It is a very simple song as long as you form the chords correctly. There is only one small part that is a bit of a reach for those with small hands. If you have any questions, let me know. Also, don't worry about playing this "exactly" the way the tab is. A tab is a guideline... something to go off of. And above all, have fun playing! smile.gif

I am currently working on The Seahorse. I found it (and was amazed to do so) at olga.net
However, it is a very raw version of it. Anyone else have tabs for it??

I just bought my first guitar! Its an Ibanez with a birds eye maple face and mother of pearl inlay. Very cool looking and even better sounding! biggrin.gif Its got a pick up for plugging it into an amp so I plugged it into my stereo and blasted the whole marina out this morning! biggrin.gif Everyone here got to hear a very crappy version of Spark. laugh.gif

I've been using my Dad's guitar all of this time and decided to go out and get my own. I've been taking lessons and I figured that this would help motivate me. (now I can't put it down!)

I love this thread. Its fun to learn the chords and then play along with the songs. I'm not that good yet, but it sounds great when I finally do hit the correct note with the song once in a while! Right now I'm looking for easy stuff thats fun to play, so if ya know of any, please point them out to me.

That tab drove me nuts for years--years, I tell you! It's so incomplete. Finally I just stared at Karin's hands at one concert when they played it, and I think I've got the right version worked out now. It's maybe not perfect, but it's pretty damn close:

Does anyone know where to find the chords for Nobody #1?

Does anyone have the chords to the Julie Miller song from Blue Pony called Last Song? I'm putting together entertainment for a retirement party and would really like to learn this song.
kevlar_soul
i caught them in Chapel Hill and watched Karin very carefully. I should have more to add soon, but my first lesson came during "I Want You To Be My Love"

It's G and C
thats it.

BlondeDynamite
Hey, I know this isn't about tabs, but.... I figured a lot of guitar players read this thread, and I'm too lazy to look for a different one. So, when I have my electric plugged into my amp on the clean channel I get static-ish sounds sometimes. This happens at all volumes. I don't know what to do about it. The amp isn't broken and hasn't ever been turned up all the way, so it's not blown or anything. I dunno. any advice?
WalrusOct9
Could you elaborate more on the static-y sounds? Like, as in it's distorted? Or there's other static-type noises. Did you try a few different instrument cables? A bad cable can create some unwanted noise, or disrupt the signal altogether.
BlondeDynamite
it'll happen when I play a chord, not a single note. The notes become unclear.. it's like.. the static between radio stations. dunno. I'll try different cables though. Thanks smile.gif

It probably doesn't do anyone else any good but I can provide the sheet music for my violin version of "I Want You to Be My Love".....being a trained violinist (and not even a mediocre guitarist), I tend to figure out how to play songs on violin, even if they have no discernable part for it. Basically I took the middle ground between the piano and the guitar and tried to follow the tune as best I could......

I also have worked out (or I am working on) arrangements for OTR's "Hush Now" and Hem's "Stupid Mouth Shut" (lead part, as opposed to the bridge part you hear in the studio version of the song); among a lot of other stuff.....including versions of:
"Call Me the Breeze"-Lynyrd Skynyrd (which is a really fun song to play live with a band)
"Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd
"Ohne Dich (Without You) by Rammstein (which already features orchestral accompaniment)
"Fields of Athenrye"- Dropkick Murphys (to take place of the bagpipe part)
GhostWriter
Hey Murphy, I'm sure someone will use it! Thanks for the input! smile.gif

Just a quick heads up...

Here are a few that are coming down the pipe. I'm almost done with them.

Jesus in New Orleans - OtR
Circle of Quiet - OtR
Lookin' Forward - OtR
Forgiveness - Patty Griffin

Thanks John,
I have actually been playing along with JINO since someone a while back said it was just those four chords...but I have a Karin question:
How does Karin make that little clipped, muted strum when she plays this. She does it on a few songs. Like Anything at All, Orphan Girl...do you know what strum I mean? I love that but I can't figure how to do it.

PS Are you bringing your guitar tomorrow?

Hi Trudes,
I wasn't able to figure out what you meant from JINO, so I went to Anything At All. What Karin is likely doing there is a slightly different version of what's called "palm muting". Normally, palm muting is done while playing with a pick using the "butt" unsure.gif or "meaty part" of the palm (near the thumb) to partially or completely mute the strings. Bruce Springsteen has a great example of this in his recent song Devils & Dust. It has a "dull" sound to it.

However....

In THIS case, I believe what Karin is doing is strumming WITHOUT a pick. She's likely sweeping over the strings with her thumb and then using most of her palm to COMPLETELY mute the strings to produce the "CLIPPED" sensation. This is very possible given that OtR regularly records two different (or more) guitar parts in the studio (or charming house). One part is kind of a lazily played part (the sweeping, clipped part) while the other part is a bit more standard (likely played with a pick). Another feature of this kind of muting is the "slap" or "beat" of the fingers on the body of the guitar.

Of course Karin could log on tonight and say I'm full of it, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. happy.gif

And I'm not sure I'm bringing the guitar.... should I? unsure.gif

Yeah Trudy... I use "notepad" to tab songs. Seems to be the most reliable and easy to use text program for it. It's hard to get the chords to show up right where they're played otherwise. Nice job though! Looking forward to playing this one.

Thanks!

Hey Donny. Spent a few minutes this evening running down some chords for you. This is a ridiculously simple solution, but have at it if you like (I know how frustrating it can be to NOT be able to play along with a favorite tune). This is, of course, a keyboard piece, but in very, very basic terms you could play along with it on keys or guitar using these chords. There is so much going on (inversions, etc.) in Linfords playing that it would take forever to get it "right".

Had some luck playing along with it on guitar (finger-picking) using these chords tonight, but I almost hate to post this because it's such a beautiful song. I hope this helps.
John

Verse chords: Em - D - C - B

Chorus chords: C - *C#m7b5 - **D/G - B

*On guitar, the C#m7b5 chord is rather easily played... X-4-2-0-0-0
**This is inverted, thus, DGB (or X-X-0-0-0-X on guitar)

Hi Angie...

The chords you're looking for are as follows...

The main two chords as you noticed:
Cm - [x-3-5-5-4-3]
G - [3-5-5-4-3-3]

Then there is a little turn around that is repeated a couple times (at least on my December '05 Little Brothers recording)

It's got to be good...
Eb - [x-6-8-8-8-x]
G - [3-5-5-4-3-3]

So precarious...
Fm - [1-3-3-1-1-1]
C# - [x-4-6-6-6-x]

I've noted the chords in guitar tab form. They're all barre chords, so hopefully your fingers are in good playing shape. If so, this is a fun song to play! If you are playing piano, just look up the chords on a chart.

Hope that helps!
John
GhostWriter
For sckendrick...

Chords for White Horse (one of my favs) are as follows:

Guitar tuned down two steps to D [D-G-C-F-A-D]

Verse Chord Shapes (not actual chords as you are de-tuned) are:
G - Am - C - G - D/F#

Chorus Chord Shapes are:
C - G - D/F#

G = 3-2-0-0-0-3
Am = X-0-2-2-1-0
C = X-3-2-0-1-0
D/F# = 1-0-0-2-3-2 (play the 1 with your thumb)
________________________________________________________

Now... if you don't like the idea of de-tuning your guitar to D (some guitars, like my Martin, don't sound good that low, where my Takamine loves that low tuning), you can still play it in standard tuning! Just use the "actual" chords that are created in the previous version. The only thing is, you'll have to be fairly proficient at barre chords.

Guitar in normal tuning - [E-A-D-G-B-E]

Verse Chords:
F - Gm - Bb - F - E/C

Chorus Chords:
Bb - F - E/C

F = 1-3-3-2-1-1
Gm = 1-3-3-1-1-1
Bb = X-1-3-3-3-X
E/C = 0-3-2-0-1-0
________________________________________________________

Hope this helps, and have fun!
John
GhostWriter
Little Town - (again, for sckendrick)

Capo at the first fret - [F-A#-D#-G#-C-F]

Verse Chord Shapes: D - DM7 - G - Em - D

Chorus Chord Shapes: G - D/F# - Em

D = X-X-0-2-3-2
DM7 = X-X-0-2-2-2
G = 3-2-0-0-0-3
Em = 0-2-2-0-0-0
D/F# = 1-0-0-2-3-2

Again, disclaimer, very simple, but you should be able to play along now.

Thanks to Karin and Linford for making such great music that we can all play and sing along to.
John

Snow Angel

Ok, so this is a keyboard piece, but, obiously, may be played on guitar.

Guitar in normal tuning - [E-A-D-G-B-E]

Verse Chords:
D - A - C# - F#m
D - A - B - E

Chorus Chords:
D - A - C# - F#m
D - A - B - E
... (2nd time through is D - A - E - A)

D = X-X-0-2-3-2
A = X-0-2-2-2-X
C# = X-4-6-6-6-X
F#M = 2-4-4-2-2-2
B = X-2-4-4-4-X
E = 0-2-2-1-0-0

Thanks again to K & L for such great music to play along with!

Have fun!
John

Hi arare.

Try this...

Guitar in normal tuning [EADGBE]

G - 3-2-0-0-3-3 (I actually play this 3-X-0-0-3-3 by playing the low string with my second finger and muting the next string... fwiw)
G/B - X-2-0-0-3-3
Cadd9 - X-3-2-0-3-3

Just play a G chord, then use your first finger on the second fret of string #5 to make the G/B and then Cadd9. Repeat. A lot.

Another playing tip would be to pick the bass string of each chord on the "1 beat" each time then the rest of the strings. Play by feel!

That's all there is to it! smile.gif (well, actually that's not true... there's a cool little hammer at the end of each chord phrase. Listen closely and you'll pick it up!)

If you want the piano part, go ask Linford... ph34r.gif

Have fun...
