Thanks John,
I have actually been playing along with JINO since someone a while back said it was just those four chords...but I have a Karin question:
How does Karin make that little clipped, muted strum when she plays this. She does it on a few songs. Like Anything at All, Orphan Girl...do you know what strum I mean? I love that but I can't figure how to do it.
T xo
PS Are you bringing your guitar tomorrow?
Hi Trudes,
I wasn't able to figure out what you meant from
JINO, so I went to
Anything At All. What Karin is likely doing there is a slightly different version of what's called
"palm muting". Normally, palm muting is done while playing with a pick using the "butt"

or "meaty part" of the palm (near the thumb) to partially or completely mute the strings. Bruce Springsteen has a great example of this in his recent song Devils & Dust. It has a "dull" sound to it.
However....
In THIS case, I believe what Karin is doing is strumming WITHOUT a pick. She's likely sweeping over the strings with her thumb and then using most of her palm to COMPLETELY mute the strings to produce the "CLIPPED" sensation. This is very possible given that OtR regularly records two different (or more) guitar parts in the studio (or charming house). One part is kind of a lazily played part (the sweeping, clipped part) while the other part is a bit more standard (likely played with a pick). Another feature of this kind of muting is the "slap" or "beat" of the fingers on the body of the guitar.
Of course Karin could log on tonight and say I'm full of it, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
And I'm not sure I'm bringing the guitar.... should I?
