When I was a kid, there was a newspaper cartoon (a one box-er) that was called Love Is . . ., by Kim (Kim Casali). The characters was a naked girl and boy with huge eyes; there was no color to it. The comic simply said, "Love Is . . ." and then whatever. I remember collecting several of them and taping them to my mirror, so it might have been popular in the early to mid-70s.
Love Is, by KimAnyway, how 'bout Happiness Is . . . thread?
Happiness Is . . . a cup of decaf caramel truffle coffee with cream on a lazy Friday afternoon.

I totally thought this thread was going to be based on the Peanuts song:)
Happiness is dressing up and going out dancing with the girls.

Happiness is the glorious spring days we've been going through, and all the pleasures that come with them....
short sleeve shirts, windows down in the car, the first flowers of the year, digging in the garden and feeling the cold earth in your hands,
sitting on the deck for the first time this year with no 'skeeters',
opening up all the windows in the house and having that fresh air blow in.....
ahhh... this is happiness

Happiness is a warm gun!
She's not a girl who misses much
Do do do do do do
oh, yeah
She's well acquainted with
the touch of the velvet hand
Like a lizard on a window pain
The man in the crowd with the
multicolored mirror on his hobnail boots
Lying with his eyes while his
hands are busy working overtime
A soap impression of his wife which
he ate and donated to the National Trust
I need a fix cause I'm going down
Down to the bits that I left uptown
I need a fix cause I'm going down
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Happiness is a warm gun
Happiness is a warm gun mama
When I hold you in my arms
and I feel my finger on you trigger
I know nobody can do no harm
Because Happiness is a warm gun mama
Happiness is a warm gun, yes it is
Happiness is a warm, yes it is, gun
Ah, don't you know that
Happiness is a warm gun mama

Of course, my first reaction was a warm gun, but there are just to many Beatles freaks on this board... So, I'll offer Ayn Rands opinion of happiness...
A little later Keating heard Toohey saying solemnly in the midst of some earnest discussion: “Happiness? But that is so middle-class. What is happiness? There are so many things in life so much more important than happiness.”
He stared into the fire. That was what made a man happy—to sit looking dreamily into a fire, at his own hearth, in his own home; that’s what he had always heard and read. He stared at the flames, unblinking, to force himself into complete obedience to an established truth. Just one more minute of it and I will feel happy, he thought, concentrating. Nothing happened.
In America the Bill of Rights grants each human being the unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Only the pursuit of happiness, not happiness itself.
Happiness is not a fruit of the Spirit: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control. Against such there is no law. (Gal 5:22-23)
Well, I guess I'm a happy man --Bruce Cockburn (have I mentioned him here before?)
Don't worry, be happy - Bobby McFerrin
If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad
- Sheryl Crow
Woo hoo
I’ve fallen in love with you
And for the first time in my life
I know what it’s like to be a happy man
- Chicago
Oh happy day
Oh happy day
Oh happy day
Oh happy day
When Jesus washed
Oh when he washed
When Jesus washed
He washed my sins away!
- Edwin Hawkins Singers
What makes me happy? Being able to sip good coffee, on a nice cool breezy day, with the windows open, the birds chirping, in my favorite chair and post to the "Happiness Is..." thread.

This reminds me. While Bruce may not have found happiness, he did find his thrill on Blueberry Hill! If you don't have it, you should get a copy of Bruce's
Breakfast in New Orleans, Dinner in Timbuktu CD. He duets on "Blueberry Hill" with Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies. Great, great cover!

TO me, happiness is a temporary state - not an ultimate goal. happiness is a little distraction in a bumpy road. While I do not mind these flashes of happiness here and there, they are not my goal. My goal is joy, over happiness.

Waking up in the morning.
Having someone to kiss goodbye before you leave for work.
Not being the person getting the speeding ticket on the way to work.
Having correct change for the vending machine.
Having a functional PC with which to view your overflowing inbox.
The boss venting on someone else for a change.
Having a can of chicken and a package of rice in the cupboard to make dinner when you get home.
Having someone thank you for making dinner, and not complain that it's only chicken and rice.
That same someone uncorking a bottle of wine.
Mostly it's just the little things.
