Dan, didn't you read this:

Today (December 5, 2005), I upgraded the Orchard to version 2.1.3 of the Invision Power Board software.
...

One additional new feature is that I've configured the site to automatically post a message to the Member Bios forum when a new user registers. This way, you'll know when a new user has registered and can make them feel welcome.

While I know the intent was good, I suspect this will clutter the bio section with a lot of empty threads.

(Sorry to hijack your welcome thread, cwhartman. Welcome to the Orchard!)

i agree with you jeanne. also, it kind of lets newbies off the hook for introducing themselves when they come into the orchard. it's nice hearing from the new guy's finger tips that they are here, what they are into, fave color, etc...

peace,

Okay. I've disabled the feature. I wasn't entirely convinced about it anyway... If it auto-generated the post AND subscribed the new user to the thread, it would have been more valuable -- that way, they'd be automatically notified of any replies to the thread. But they're not, so the new user may never even see the posts. So, it's disabled.

good call...i know that when i was a new person to the orchard, i wasn't really that interested in the message board format.

this way, the new kids need to take it upon themselves to say hi, when they are ready.

I was thinking that if the locals around here saw that there were new people, that they might take the initiative to say hello first. But the fact that the new member wasn't automatically subscribed to the announcement thread was a deal-breaker for me.
