We were at the first performance at Old Town School of Folk Music. What a great show!! Here is a set list I snagged. The second encore was "Fairpoint Diary" and "My Love is a Fever".

WalrusOct9
Thanks for posting that...for whatever reason I thought "Cruel And Pretty" was in the main set. Original post updated, I think it's correct now.

Also, if anyone knows what Linford's piano solo was, I'd be curious to know. He came out for the second encore and just did a solo piano piece for about 3 minutes...it sounded familiar, Kelly said it might be some Christmas song, but traditional christmas music all kind of sounds the same to me so I really couldn't place it.

wow! where to start? ok, to start, i'm beat, worn out...spent.

ok, now the shows. two great shows last night, the "reader's digest" version, two new songs, "white horse", a real beauty with soaring vocals by karin. "here it is" an very nice dylanesque rocker with, as karin said "a lot words", not your typical verse, chorus structure. great song, they blew it out on this one. "trouble" is now a "band song" with everyone accompying karin and there was some very playful piano by linford and drumming by devon added. personally, i think i like the original solo better, but this was a fun listen. and the cover, "son of a preacher man" absolutely kicked ass with backup harmonies by kim and devon, yes...devon sang (and was very good). lastly, for the second encore of the second show, the very cool surprise of linford walking out by himself to do a nice 3-4 minute piano solo (which seemed to be improvisational w/the hint of some christmas standards mixed in) which even seemed to surprise karin, who as she walked out on stage while applauding said "wow, he never does that". very nice, also, as always, it was great to hear "when i go" again.

both shows were excellent, tight performances and karin was in rare form, her voice was as beautiful and powerful as ever and she was in a very fun, playful and feisty mood. she kept hassling linford who "was being quiet", giving devon grief for his shyness while his wife, son and in-laws were in the audience for the early show and making faces and sticking her tongue out at kim, who was also sporting a temporary "mom" tatoo (drawn on her right bicep by brandon with a sharpie between shows), trying to get a reaction out of her. all of this was set to a beautiful backdrop of a light but steady chicago snowfall. definately helped me get in the christmas mood.

a great night. good to see rachshel & steve, kylie (& "the boy"), steve & kelly, and my friend jay, his wife and four of his neighbors (at their first show) who were completely blown away (and each bought the entire OtR catalog and pre-ordered the taft cd) and said they "can't wait until they come back to town". also, much thanks to jeffery for his hospitality (and sofa), great to see you there, glad you could make it.

it was a great night and i think it's just gonna get better...

Okay, so I looked it up when I got home...OTR played "Fairpoint Diary" at my very first show in the summer of 2000, which I just went to with a friend having no idea who they were. Last night was the first time I'd heard them play that song in 5 years. smile.gif With all the bootlegs and new albums and such, it really has been a long, long time since I'd spun Films and I'd completely forgotten about that song since they never play it anymore. That totally made my night.

I've been waiting for them to cover Son of a Preacher Man forever, and they have to do it for the Christmas tour I can't get to? dry.gif

Glad y'all enjoyed yourselves anyway, sounds like a great night!
WalrusOct9
They love you Keith...you might be able to talk them into playing it in a spring show next year. smile.gif

Besides, they're still doing "Moondance," so this one might stick around for a bit. They all seemed to be having quite a bit of fun with it.

Unfortunately it doesn't apply to anything related to school, work, relationships, or anything else remotely practical.

Good shows-- good people! I'll have to review my records, but I believe that this might have been the only time I've seen duct tape successfully used during a live performance.

It was great to meet you all. I hope you out-of-towners had a good time in Chicago. You'll have to come back in the Spring and I'll show you around.

Nice photos, Bill. Thanks for posting them so soon.

my friend jay, his wife and four of his neighbors (at their first show) who were completely blown away (and each bought the entire OtR catalog and pre-ordered the taft cd) and said they "can't wait until they come back to town".

i just got an e-mail from jay and he was telling me that on the drive home, his friends, who were completely blown away by the show, just kept saying "that was amazing...why aren't these people famous?", "why have i never heard of them before?", "i can't wait to see them again."

after the show, they must have thanked me 20 times for introducing jay to the band and the music, since he brought them to the show...

ahhh, adding to the list of the enlightened feels good. biggrin.gif

You can listen to archived shows AT the Old Town School...I don't know about purchasing though?
WalrusOct9
I know you can't remove recordings from the Old Town archives, and I'm pretty sure they won't copy stuff for you (since I doubt a lot of the artists would be cool with that), so I'm thinking the only way to do this is to go there and transfer their recordings onto a portable DAT deck or a Nomad Jukebox 3, which I'd be willing to attempt at some point as soon as I figure out how to record onto the Nomad (I know dozens of tapers now use the NJ3 instead of DAT tapes). It might not be too hard to do this quietly depending on how their listening area is set up. Unfortunately I have no idea what their equipment is like or if I'd even have a method of getting any kind of line input to record from.
