Okay, so I downloaded Hollow and Redwing from iTunes last night. Played them a couple of times, really liked them, paid $10 to download the other 14 songs,

Yay Keith!! I'm so durn proud of ya, my boy. Thrilled to read this, thrilled I say.

I read transcripts of this interview w/ Dan Messe of Hem on Christina's (AllAboutHem forum name) fan-site All About Hem, then stumbled on the audio snippets yesterday. For those interested:

while trolling on google, I came up with this as well - a feature on rollingstone.com (mostly a dan interview, and a bit of an odd one at that, but still...!), and there are a few more tour dates listed (including a wilco opener) too.

go to rollingstone.com and click the news window - something about slovak folk (!)

I'm with michelle on hollow & redwing, and I would add strays - I heard them play this live, and it's been one of my favorites since.

I pre-ordered, but not speedy shipping.  Hopefully I'll have it by the end of the week.

It's Friday, mail just came and no Eveningland. I have stuff shipped to work so that means even it if comes tomorrow, I won't get it till Monday (Tuesday if there's no mail on Columbus Day)... Welp, guess this Borders 15% off coupon is going towards an Eveningland cd at lunch today and my buddy and her husband will discover who HEM are when I give them my in-the-mail extra copy. OtR is the only band that I've ever bought multiple copies of cd's - till today.

I recently added Rabbilt Songs to my collection. Glad I finally listened to those of you who have been suggesting them. I'll be getting the new one soon.

OK, as Chuck knew long ago it was just a matter of time for me and HEM. I've had to set an hour aside at the end of each day since Friday just to drown myself in Eveningland. They literally create their own musical world on this CD, unabashedly old-fashioned, sentimental and overflowing with hope (I don't think there's so much as a minor chord on the whole album), and it's totally unlike anything else I've ever heard. I've even gotten to appreciate most of the orchestra arrangements, which for the most part are very thoughtfully written. There are a few less-than-great songs IMO (and I still don't get why they decided to cover Jackson here), but there are also more than half a dozen which are just staggering in their beauty and originality. Sally Ellyson doesn't have a lot in the way of emotional range, but her voice is lovely and sincere and perfectly suited to this material, and the passages where she sings in harmony with her bandmates are often transcendental. The musicianship is impeccable throughout, and Dan Messe is an amazing songwriter.

This album definitely isn't for everybody, but if you can check your cynicism at the door, Eveningland is a truly unique listening experience. I think it will probably be duking it out with Impossible Dream for my favorite album of the year.

I bought Rabbit Songs yesterday and I'm working my way into that too.
michelle
Keith, I loved every word you wrote about HEM.

Well, as I hinted at above I couldn't wait and bought Eveningland Friday night (still hasn't come in the mail). Like Keith, I've been drowning myself in it. It's just so lovely. I knew Fire Thie was gonna do something to me when I heard it start to finish and I was right, made me tear right up. Hands down my favorite song on this album. Receiver, Hollow and Dance With Me, Now Darling are doing big ol' number on me as well.

Re: Jackson, they did a cover EP in 2002 called I'm Talking With My Mouth. The songs were performed live at shows as well. Valentine's Day still kicks my ass. This next thought is something I'm totally whipping out of my butt - I'm almost wondering if they didn't decide to include Jackson on Eveningland due to Johnny Cash's passing. Their tip of the hat sorta. Remember now, that's just my thought and I've never seen that stated anywhere - so don't quote me. I over-think anyway.

I'm really, really happy you threw in the towel with your battle over being open to HEM, Keith. You go boy.

Yeah yeah, next thing you know I'll be liking the Indigo Girls. wink.gif

Your theory about Jackson seems plausible enough, although the original version is one of the reasons I didn't listen to Johnny Cash for 20 years. That and Ring of Fire, which I still think is a really dumb song (see, I'm still not that open-minded biggrin.gif).

I was thinking about your comments on Sally's singing, Keith, and thought you'd enjoy knowing a little more about Hem and Sally. Their press link isn't updated yet so I found this article which sorta sums it up. The lullabies that open Rabbit Songs and close Eveningland as a hidden track are from that a capella cassette Sally sent them. It's definately a cool story.

Rabbit Songs article in Detroit News

a portion of the article:
QUOTE
The seeds for Hem were planted when Messe befriended guitarist Steve Curtis at Carlton College in Minnesota. After graduation, Messe moved to New York and began working as a soundtrack composer for corporate and industrial films, where he met engineer and guitarist Gary Maurer and began talking about "this mythical dream project" that would combine the traditional music they love with modern sources of inspiration and instrumentation.

The three formed Hem in 1999 with the idea that they would use a different singer on every song. They placed an ad in the Village Voice and were deluged with responses, so many that they pulled the ad.

"Several weeks later, Sally, who must have had an old copy of the paper, called," Messe recalls. At the time Ellyson was working as a television news producer at "48 Hours." "She said she's not really a singer but her friends told her she had a beautiful voice and she wanted to try.

"I had heard this 10,000 times before but I said send me a demo. She said she didn't have one but she had recorded some lullabies a cappella for a friend's baby.

"She came over and made a copy for me, and I wasn't even planning on listening to it. But I went to play something else one day and accidentally played her tape. And I was dumbfounded.

"I couldn't believe that voice existed. It wasn't until Sally's voice brought these songs to life that I realized what was really there.

"We all sort of feel like it was 'The Wizard of Oz.' Like the exact right person showed up at the exact right time to get us home."

I clearly don't know as much as others do here what we were up against getting keith to get into hem wink.gif - but I am, like michelle, a bit moved by his transformation biggrin.gif

I do feel like this is a really great band (and a really special album) and it's encouraging to see the way people come to them...

if he's anything like me, though, keith'll need more than an hour at the end of the day - hem now have 4 releases out!!!
rulerofsubdivision1057
I had to battle seven dragons to get the Hem album last weekend, and I still failed.

Well, I had to drive to Columbia, anyway. Long story short, I don't recommend trying to find this album in stores.

I worked it out in my mind that Saturday I was going to buy the new Drive By Truckers album and the new Hem album. I called the local sucky music stores in Warrenton, MO, which is just a 30 minute drive from my house. Both had Rabbit Songs and Decoration Day but neither of the new albums. So I decided to drive an hour to Columbia and try Circuit City, which usually has a pretty good selection. It had !1! copy of The Dirty South, and it became mine (it's excellent, by the way--I just might start a DBT thread.) The worker drones had never heard of Hem, but they directed me to Streetside Records, which is a great store with a great selection of indie music, although I'd never been there before. They had a whole Hem divider in the H section but there was nothing in it because Rabbit Songs had sold out and they weren't aware of Eveningland's release. The desk girl said she'd order it and I could come back in two weeks. I ended up settling for Kings of Convenience, and now I don't have any money to buy Eveningland, record store or otherwise.

How did that happen?

Dawn Landes was a nice addition; her voice goes well with Sally's, and she had a fine touch on the glockenspiel. I missed Catherine Popper on bass. John Flower did a very good job, but he's nowhere near as purty. The Ark is a much nicer venue than any of the clubs where I saw Hem in '03.

What happened to Catherine Popper? Has she left or is she just not on this tour?

Well, the show last night was really good. I didn't really know many of the songs other than the ones Keith sent me and the Springsteen cover, but they're a really good live band. It was cool that they had 8 people on stage and somehow it didn't sound like a complete mess. Sally was pretty funny, she chided the keyboard player over the lyrics of one of the songs and the band members with microphones then proceeded to make jokes about each other for a couple minutes.

Anyways, it was a really enjoyable set, hopefully they'll come through here again sometime...thanks Keith and Mich. smile.gif

I just gave these guys my first listen on Thursday in borders... and I really loved it. of course, as I said, that was on Thursday, Jan. 20. they were here on wed, Jan 19... I'll spare you my Homer impersonation, but suffice it to say that my head is rather sore right now...
WalrusOct9
Well, last night's show was sold out, and they're actually from the States (unlike most of the bands I listen to), so the odds are pretty good they'll be touring again.

I discovered the Manic Street Preachers one week after they'd been in Detroit in 1998...and they haven't been back to the States since. Now that is a Homer moment.

I was scanning the schedule of The Bob Edwards Show on XM Satellite Radio and noticed that Sally & Dan from Hem will be his guests on Thursday, February 10. The show is on at 8:00 a.m. eastern and replays at 9:00 p.m. eastern. If I'm home tomorrow night, I will record the show and offer it as a vine. (but I may not be home)

Yet another reason to support Hem:

I brought Flat Stanley to a Hem show the other day, and rather sheepishly asked Sally if I could have a picture taken of the two of them. She not only enthusiastically agreed, she summoned the entire band for the picture.

From Hem's mailing list today:

QUOTE
Hello everybody,

As you have heard if you've been poking around the myspace site or eveningland.com, we're in a bit of a studio flurry right now... We just completed the last of many tracks for what will be a collection of covers, outtakes, live recordings and Hem miscellany, and we're off now to begin work on our next full-length recording of original material. We'll keep you posted as conditions evolve, but the current sense is that we're thriving in the studio. No furious breakdowns; not too many addictions; lots of good writing and recording.

We've got just one show coming up - a benefit show for Reprieve , an organization that works to provide legal and humanitarian assistance to people facing the death penalty. All proceeds from the show, November 1st at Sin-é in New York City, will help provide these services to families who were additionally impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Please come out to show your support if you're able Sin-é is a great intimate place to hear music. More info at http://www.sin-e.com.

Our next scheduled show, we're very pleased to announce, will be February 9th at Lincoln Center, as part of the American Songbook series. "Pleased" is actually a pretty weak word; we're practically breaking a sweat. It's going to be a wonderful set - a full night of Hem with a small chamber orchestra to, you know, make everything sound extra good. We'll do more rhapsodizing for you online as the date approaches, but tickets are in fact already on sale. Go to http://www.lincolncenter.org/.

Oh, how Hem loves to tease.

Sally sounds luciously beautiful, talk about a radiant flower that keeps blooming, man.

From Christina's ever-so-badass Hem Fansite - All About Hem

** This isn't official news, as Christina states on her site (but it's still really f*ckin' exciting): Not much is known about the album at this time, but its release date is possibly as early as February 7, 2006 (two days before Hem's show at Lincoln Center in New York where they'll be joined by a small chamber orchestra in a live show first), and there have been some songs mentioned as possible album tracks. As more information becomes known, I'll further update its discography entry. **

No Word From Tom (US, 7 February 2006 ??)
An album of covers, b-sides, outtakes, and live songs

Track list is unknown at this time. The following songs (listed in alphabetical order) have been mentioned in Hem's blog with regard to work on this album, so they're likely candidates to make the album's final cut. In all, expect 16 songs on the album, the so-called "Hem dozen" that appears on each of Hem's full length albums.

The Golden Day Is Dying [Traditional cover]The Present [B-side]
Rainy Night In Georgia [Brook Benton cover]

Other songs (also listed alphabetically) known to be in Hem's collection of covers, b-sides, and outtakes that may make the cut include the following.

Black Star [Radiohead cover]
Crazy Arms [Cover]
Eveningland (long version) [Eveningland outtake]
Hymn #1 [Eveningland outtake]
Oh No [Eveningland outtake]
Radiation Vibe [Fountains of Wayne cover]
Tennessee Waltz [Cover]

There's also the song No Word From Tom which has been mentioned as a Hem original tune, but it may instead (or in addition) refer to that song in Igor Stravinsky's opera "The Rake's Progress."

And Keith, having work off Friday I dusted off the antenna and watched some daytime tv... Ellen Degeneres was in NY and her show was being broadcast from the Lincoln Center. I am so jealous in the good way about you getting to see Hem, of all bands, at that particular venue. It's gorgeous.
keith from ny
Yes, I feel quite fortunate to be seeing them in that particular room (one of many great venues at Lincoln Center), and I'm also looking forward to meeting Christina at the show. I even talked Karen into coming with me! I just hope they let me record.
GhostWriter
Picked this up this afternoon (Eveningland). After checking the web site out and then getting the CD, I have to say it was definitely not what I expected (in a good way). I was very pleasantly surprised. My fav tracks so far...

6. Hollow
9. Strays
11. Jackson
15. Pacific Street
16. Carry Me Home

Couple other thoughts...
This CD has a very old feel to it. Like, in a classic sense. I can hear Patsy Cline, Karen Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Judy Collins and maybe some Joan Baez in there.... I think there's some sounds from the 40's in there too.

Thanks for mentioning this group.
keith from ny
Welcome to the wonderful world of Hem! Can't say I hear much of any of those people myself (maybe a little Karen Carpenter when Sally gets into the low end of her range), but Eveningland definitely has an unabashedly romantic/nostalgic feel to it. Run right out and get Rabbit Songs too, it's also a classic.
WalrusOct9
"Eveningland" is slowly taking over from Beth Orton's Central Reservation as the most relaxing, calming album in my CD collection. Lately I've been listening to "Redwing" a lot...no idea what that song is about, but it's such a great melody.
