Someone asked about top ten favorite singers/bands in another topic so how about movies?
Here are mine, not necessarily in any order:
1. It's a Wonderful Life--"Teacher says every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings."
2. So I Married an Axe Murderer-- "Harriet, sweet Harriet, hard-hearted harbinger of haggis..."
3. Signs--"What if there are no coincidences..."
4. Best in Show--"Where is the BUSY BEE!?!"
5. A Christmas Story--"My kid brother's only defense was to lay there like a slug."
6. Austin Powers 1 and 2--"Allow myself to introduce....myself."
7. White Christmas--"I'm dreaming..."
8. The Princess Bride--"There are a shortage of perfect breasts in the world. It would be a shame to ruin yours."
9. O Brother, Where Art Thou--"WE THOUGHT YOU WAS A TOAD!"
10. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory--"Do you know what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he ever wanted? He lived happily ever after."

I'm one of the 5! I own Buffalo '66! It's such a quirky movie--I think you either love it or hate it. I love the scene with Christina Ricci tapdancing in the bowling alley . . .
That Vincent Gallo is one crazy mofo.
Anyway, back to the top ten lists.

Buffalo '66 ... is that the one where the scuzzy guy kidnaps the girl, and she tries to get chummy with him, and he freaks out when she makes faces in a photo booth, and he brings her home to Mom & Dad, and Dad sits her down on his lap etc. etc.?
I had enough trouble working down to my Top 100 or so in another thread, that's the best I can do.

While You Were Sleeping
Um... you know that scene from the British version of Coupling where Jane is explaining why Susan isn't in her top-10 speed-dial list? My favorite movies are like that. Books are another story.
Honorable mentions: Sliding Doors, Run Lola Run, That Thing You Do, My Best Friend's Wedding, The Little Mermaid (Disney), Lilo and Stitch (Disney), Girl With a Pearl Earring, Whale Rider, Girl, Interrupted, Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Sound of Music, Sabrina (original and remake), Return to Me, Breakfast at Tiffany's, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, The Princess Bride, Say Anything. Actually, if you want to rank Miyazaki, here's my recommendation:
Spirited Away
Castle in the Sky
Tonari no Totoro
Princess Mononoke
Kiki's Delivery Service (I love this movie, but it is kinda slow)
Castle of Cagliostro
and if Nausicaa ever comes out, i will be a happy man.

I'd have to put
High Fidelity at the top of any list though.
That is a movie about my life...minus owning the record store and looking like John Cusack. (although my life would be a lot more interesting if i did look like him). I remember seeing that for the first time and just freaking out because I'm so much like that guy...I've actually been in a record store and discussed the "top 5 musical crimes perpetrated by Stevie Wonder in the 80's and 90's."

Hell no! I laughed through three quarters of that film, and it was supposed to be a tragedy. For the film review I had to write for a French exam the following week, I titled the piece "Une Promenade à oublier." I'm still mad at Mandy Moore for butchering a song - ANY song - by Switchfoot. At least it wasn't Let That Be Enough. Oie, that movie sucked. I may watch girly movies, but please give me SOME credit!

I love Michael Moore. While he's as guilty of twisting factual information to suit his own needs as Rush Limbaugh is, at least I agree with Michael Moore on most things. I really hate guns in this country, I have no sympathy at all for second-amendment supporters whatsoever on that issue. It was nice to see Moore address the problem so directly.
And it's always fun to watch conservatives get pissed off.

Pedro, I think what Steve was getting at was that Michael Moore and Rush Limbaugh both tend to lapse into the jargon of each of their political camps, without always taking good arguments from the other side into consideration or looking carefully at all the facts. While they might not engage in outright lying, they do tend to go for emotional appeals rather than strictly informative presentations. But then, most people aren't interested in just information, so people who do provide that probably aren't as well-known.
This is one of the reasons I didn't enjoy Bowling for Columbine as much on multiple viewings -- because Moore plays so obviously for his audience's sympathies that at times, it's almost painful. But I do think it raises a lot of interesting questions that a lot of folks don't think about, and I was glad it received as much attention as it did.
Not trying to start an argument here; you're definitely entitled to your opinion, and folks around here are pretty welcoming of diversity. Just thought I'd toss in my two cents on this one.

Michael Moore's use of statistics needs... um... some work. But overall, I think he's got some good things to say. His manipulativeness is duly noted, though.
He's a
satirical genius. I think he'd have more effect if he was more careful with the numbers he throws around.
