Sorry if this has been posted already, but the search won't let me use "XM" to search.
Does anybody have XM or Sirius? How do you like it? Any reccomendations?
My commute has gotten a bit longer and I am thinking of getting this, but the $12.95 a month is what is turning me off right now. Wondering if it is worth it...

absolutely worth it!
i bought XM radio for my ex last christmas, and we loved it. half of the stations have no commercials, and even the ones that do are bearable. it's very easy to avoid what you don't know, and there are plenty of lesser known bands on there. one of my favorite stations to listen to was the unsigned station...it's always interesting to hear what's out there, waiting to be discovered.
so, yes, it is worth it, as long as you are in the car a lot. i don't listen to the regular radio at all, so it was nice to hear some current music that i didn't own. i don't need it in my car because i have such a plethora of cds, but, again, if you like the radio, and not necessarily knowing what's coming on next, go for it.

My only XM experience was during a traffic jam-laden trip back to L.A. from San Diego. There was a lot of different stuff available, which was cool, but was still a bit frustrating since having a 60 gig mp3 player in the car for a few years now has gotten me into this mentality of being able to hear whatever I want all the time. Honestly, that was the first extended radio listening I'd done in 7 or 8 years, and it was a bit odd having music come on that I didn't actively choose.
I like the idea, but I'm kind of waiting for it to be taken one step further...while XM stations were better than regular radio, they're still very specifically categorized, and I've never been much of a fan of genres. I guess I'm used to having my Nomad on random, and enjoying hearing Miles Davis, R.E.M., and Dream Theater all in one drive, so from that perspective XM was a little frustrating.
I think it's a cool idea, but I'm not sure I'd opt for XM or Sirius over just having a gargantuan mp3 library in my car.

I've had Sirius in my car for almost two years. I spend at least 12 hours a week driving, so it's well worth the $143 per year IMO. I absolutely love it, although I'm still quite annoyed they changed their excellent alt-country channel to Charlie Daniels-style shitkicker music a few months after I signed up. Mostly I listen to Sirius Blues, Bluegrass, The Vault (rarely heard classic rock), Folktown, Tropical, 50s/60s Oldies (the good stuff, not the crappy pop they play on a lot of oldies stations), the World Music channel, and my favorite, the very eclectic Sirius Disorder where a lot of the old WNEW-NY DJs like Meg Griffin and Vin Scelsa wound up -- David Johanson also does a wild show on Friday nights there. You can hear anything from Beausoleil to Ornette Coleman to The Ramones to Patty Griffin to Arcade Fire, and I've discovered a few artists I was unfamiliar with there including Dada and Johnny A. Sirius also carries CNN, two NPR stations, FOX News and my favorite news source the BBC (the antidote to FOX), which features much better coverage of American politics than U.S. radio stations and actually recognizes there are more than four or five nations in the world. There's also local traffic reports for major cities, uncensored comedy channels, Air America, etc etc. They also carry all the NHL games live.
Life is too short for commercials.
