So I think this is a really great song, but does anyone else think it would be so much greater without the beginning part. The first few times I listened to the CD I would skip over it because I hated that first part so much--it took a while before I realized how cool the rest of the song was...

*listening now*.... I guess I can see why you might feel that way, but, to me, that beginning of the song kind of sets up (creates a noticeable tension against) the piano part and then, finally, the opening lyrics.
As I listen to it, it kind of sounds like the way they would open the song live, if not on the CD. Thanks for making me go back and listen...

LazyAsSin - I agree 100%. I didn't like that beginning part either and skipped it as well! I kept doing that up until I heard it in concert/live. Then I loved the song after that. Now the opening part is exciting because of the anticipation it brings for that killer piano rif (do piano's have rifs?) and Karin's smooth voice.
And I thought I was the only one.

I, for one, really like the intro..and the transition...
yeah, I think it
is because of the anticipation.

I love this band.

The first chord is what hooked me from the first time I heard the song--there's so much emotion and anticipation in one note...

Wow! It's nice to be able to read others' take on these songs. I did the same thing - took Firefly out my playlist because I wasn't impressed by the opening part. Dumb.
After re-listening a few times I totally agree with the "anticipation" comment. It's sort of like the beginning of Dark Side of the Moon - the first time you hear it, it's just meaningless sound effects. After awhile the opening crescendo would give me goose bumps because I knew what was coming.
And yes, pianos do have rifs. At least the ones with three pedals do - the middle pedal is the rif pedal.

When we saw OtR in June, we took our daughter with us to see them, for the first time. I think she came away from the show with this as her favorite song.

Wow. This really surprises me. The intro part of this song is one of my favorite parts of any Over the Rhine song. I loves it. And I really think the piano part would lose some of its impact without the intro.

I agree the first time I'd ever heard this song was live in concert and I was so in love with it from the beginning... I couldn't imagine if that hadn't been there... but we are all entitled to our opinions!
