I talked to my credit card company a couple weeks ago requesting them to stop mailing me "courtesy checks" unless I call and request them. The other day I got a letter from them confirming my request and another letter saying the following:

-----------------------------------------------

To prohibit the use of your credit information from being used for offers of credit you did not initiate, you must notify the credit reporting agencies either by telephone or in writing. Notification by telephone prohibits them from using your information to initiate offers of credit without your consent for two years. Written notification permanently prohibits the use of your information. The addresses and telephone numbers are:

Experian
P.O. Box 2002
Allen, TX 75013-0036
1-888-397-3742

Equifax Credit Information Service
P.O. Box 740241
Atlanta, GA 30374-0241
1-800-685-1111

Trans Union LLC, Consumer Relations Center
P.O. Box 1000
Chester, PA 19022

Needless to say, three letters are being sent by me to these addresses today. I get at least 4-8 offers a week from various companies. Like most everywhere, I'd asume, we have mail theft issues here and if writing letters to these people has the same effect the 'Do not call' list did on hindering telemarketers calling me, count me in.

Also, I'm an idiot with law stuff so if my posting these addresses and information is like, bad in some way, please, please let me know.

Those addresses are meant to be publicly disclosed, no problem with posting them here.

Just keep in mind that this same notification to the credit bureaus will also prevent you from receiving ANY offers in the mail where the receiving consumer is normally screened for being credit-worthy. This includes a very broad range of offers, basically just about anything you can order through the mail and be billed for without paying in advance (for example, music and DVD clubs like BMG, and Oreck vacuum cleaners). It shouldn't affect companies you already do business and have a good payment history with, however.

This will be considered a plus by many, just something to consider before you write in.
