If anyone is unhappy with these choices, well, there's always next time! wink.gif

Didn't we do "on the road" two books ago?
Brookd
Spring of 2004 to be exact. but I don't think very many people talked about it beyond "didn't really care for it". maybe that's all there is to say. I seem to recall Luke, Anna and I having a pretty good discussion about it while everyone else was still finding copies for themselves.

Ah heck. I voted for The Color Purple. Oh well.

i didn't vote for anything. _on the road_ is the only one i own (a gift from an english major i dated eons ago), but i am willing to read anything. smile.gif

I hope The Shipping News is the winner, because I ordered it from Amazon last night!

"Brokeback Mountain." (Or as all us gays are calling it: "Bareback Mountain.")

I was just talking to a co worker the other day and he mentioned that he was reading Post Cards by Proulx. I had seen the movie the Shipping News and we spoke briefly about it. His POV on Proulx was this:

"She's a lesbian who writes great male lead characters, which is odd--most lesbians write about lesbian characters and have female leads."

Now, not having read any Proulx, or any other lesbian authors that I know of, save a short story by Dorothy Allison, I'm wondering if many of Proulx's readers feel this same way.

I just did a quick google search on her and found this quote:
"she has called it her "purpose in life to write books in which lesbians live."

Plus, now that I'm thinking about it, I don't recall any lesbian characters in The Shipping News. Were they just written out or muted down by the screenplay?

I did find the movie (TSN) very enjoyable and had planned on buying the book...

Here's a cross post from another thread just in case it may be pertinent to this topic later...

I read the book about 10 years ago and really liked it. Don't know anything about the author, and I haven't seen the movie yet.

great choices! smile.gif

looking forward to the next read...

...when does it start?

I don't know if I'll have much to contribute this time around, even though I have read The Shipping News, simply because my academic schedule is insane. Who knows, though. Procrastination implies something else being done -- why not participate in a book club discussion? wink.gif

The Shipping News looks like the winner, start whenever you're ready. Hope you can join in, Libby!
MusykLvr
i'm going to buy it tonight. smile.gif looking forward to participating...i've not been involved in a book club before. thanks for *letting* me join. biggrin.gif
joshua
just waiting for my local library to call and say my copy is in... smile.gif

i'll start as soon as i receive it!
MusykLvr
i'm four chapters in right now. she uses weird sentance structure (if she uses any at all) so it's slow going because i'm trying to decipher. i like it though...excited to finish it and discuss. do we have a projected end date? keith?
keith from ny
I'm about halfway through. How about we start discussing it at the end of the month? Is that enough time for everyone?
kylie jo
I haven't even started b/c I haven't had the money to buy the book.

Don't wait on me. Just sayin'.
GhostWriter
The Shipping News is one of those movies (rare) that I wish I read the book first. What a great story...
joshua
end of the month for discussion sounds great. smile.gif
Brookd
Kylie Jo, I'd like you to meet Library.
Library, Kylie Jo.
