One of the British fans on the Patty Griffin forum sent me a DVD of musical TV segments shown by the BBC. I was most impressed by this soulful, sassy, self-sampling half-Chinese half-Scottish singer/songwriter who I had never heard of. I ordered her album (not yet released in the US) used from Amazon after seeing this performance, which blew me away. If you have broadband and can play mp4 videos, you can download it from my website
here and check her out. The file is 106Mb and I have bandwidth restrictions, so it may take a while.
She played in NYC just last week, but I found out about it too late.

So, in what is becoming a 2006 tradition (following my experience with Imogen Heap), I finally hear this album, realize it's f'ing genius, and discover her show in Chicago is already sold out.
Seriously, Schubas is a great venue, but it holds about 150 people...if you know there's going to be more than that trying to get in, play a bigger venue.

Same thing here in the Twin towns. I went to get tix today, sold out. She was supposed to be at a larger club
(the Quest) and they moved it to a smaller one- in Dinkeytown. no less. this one shoulda been a First Ave for sure. Got her US release to look forward to on the 7th of Feb anyway.

Saw KT play in Boston last night - she wore the same dress she used for her unscheduled appearance on the Today show yesterday morning.

Great show to a packed house, and she came off the bus afterward to say hi to my friend Nicole and me.
Off to Philly to see her down there.

What a great weekend! Spoke to KT again before the show in Philly last night before she did her sound check. She was very friendly, and I think she kinda likes having a middle-aged groupie here in the states.
A few pics from last night's show at World Cafe Live, which was packed with a very appreciative audience:

The show was broadcast live on WXPN, my only complaint is that it was even shorter than Boston. You can download mp3s recorded from broadcast
here, at least for now.
Looking forward to seeing her again in March when she comes back through with her band.

Concert review: Hot Scottish newcomer KT Tunstall lives up to the U.K. hype.
Before her CD is released, a new Scottish singer lived up to the U.K. hype in her Cities debut .
Jon Bream, Star Tribune
Call it buzz. Call it hype. Whatever it was, there was a full house Wednesday night at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis to see a new Scottish pop singer two weeks before her debut album is released in the United States.
If the 475 people at KT Tunstall's Twin Cities debut had been mostly Anglophiles (you can spot 'em by their hairdos and clothes), that would have been understandable since she is a bona fide U.K. phenomenon, having sold 1.2 million copies of "Eye to the Telescope" and earning nominations for the Mercury Prize and the Brits, U.K.'s Grammys.
But the female-dominated crowd looked like a bevy of Cities 97 listeners (you can spot 'em because you've seen em at the Basilica Block Party and other Cities events). They'd gotten hooked on the Tunstall tune "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" that Cities 97 has been playing like it's the hottest debut single since Norah Jones' "Don't Know Why." (The newcomer also sang on "The Today Show" last Friday.)
In a too-short 50-minute set at the Varsity, Tunstall came across as fresh but familiar. Nearly every song suggested some other artist you've heard on Cities 97 -- Melissa Etheridge, Dido, Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones, Beth Orton, Sheryl Crow and even Coldplay -- and that made for comfortable listening to completely unfamiliar tunes.
Tunstall, 30, showed a confident, dusky voice on her enjoyably melodic tunes, filled with world-weary but not angst-ridden lyrics. Despite being dwarfed by her guitar, the diminutive singer seemed assured onstage, accompanied by her tall drummer, Lucky Luke.
"We're the White Stripes' country cousins from Britain," the instantly likable, London-based rookie said.
The stripped-down musical approach was effective, with Tunstall switching between acoustic and electric guitar, and foot-triggering loops of rhythm machines or backup vocals while her standup drummer played appropriately understatedly.
The highlights were the sassy, southern-fried "Stoppin' the Love"; "Suddenly I See" with its hooky Top 40 chorus; "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," a bluesy gallop with the haunting allure of Alannah Myles' "Black Velvet"; and an encore of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" oozing with youthful yearning.
Like Norah Jones, who did a show in St. Paul in January 2002 a few weeks before her first soon-to-be-smash album was released, Tunstall made a strong impression in her brief Twin Cities debut.
The Scottish star actually knows her way around the States a bit; she attended prep school in Connecticut and then lived in a U.S. hippie commune. But on Wednesday she was truly taken by the size of the Twin Cities crowd after having been in town for "only 15 minutes," she joked. She promised to come back soon -- with her full band and perhaps a smash U.S. album.

I ordered her CD from Amazom.com a week or two ago and it just arrived here in Cincinnati today. It looked like it was shipped from someones garage (dirty and mashed up, the package that is, not the CD). It came from Argentia and had $6.25 in postage marked on it! I know I didn't pay that much for shipping. I hope thats not US $.
Anyway, I've aready listened to it through twice while I was working. Very good CD!!! Up until now I had only heard the songs with just her and her sampleing toy. I've really enjoyed those but its kind of cool to hear her with the band. I now have another favorite! Two thumbs up.
