Just a reminder that her album is out today in the States, and she's on Conan tonight . . .
Trudes
Thanks for the tip, Shawn.
I've set my TIVO for Conan.
kent
new album is 9.99 at best buy- what a steal

there is a good review of her album in the new Paste magazine that just came out

will be watching her on Conan tonight

Watched her on Conan...she's so cute. Good performance of BHACT.

Just from curiosity I rechecked the Fox in Boulder's website and her March 14th show is totally sold out already. I'm so glad you tipped me off to get my tickets early, Shawn.

Funny, the Cowboy Junkies show (I'm seeing them too) for Feb 24th still has tickets available.

This tells me KT is the new HOT. Shortly, she'll be too famous for the little Fox Theater....she'll be doing stadiums.

I'm glad you were able to get tickets, too! We'll expect a full report. I thought Black Horse went pretty well, too, though it struck me as rather up-tempo. And I knew she was kinda short, but I was surprised at the contrast between her and Conan--or is he just that tall? I don't really watch him, normally.

And, for the record, I didn't need sold out shows to tell me that she's HOT wink.gif
WalrusOct9
Word...a girl with a guitar is almost always hot automatically. One who writes such brilliant songs is ridiculously hot.

Trudes, tell her to come back to Chicago. sad.gif

Just picked up the album. Like.... much.

Also, I didn't read back on this thread, but did you see the video of her playing live on the Launch website? Jenni directed me to it the other day. Amazing. I'd love to know what kind of electronics she was using to produce that song live like that.

John, from KT's fan forum regarding her sampling hardware:

QUOTE
She calls it her "wee bastard" pedal, but in fact it is a Akai Headrush e2. It's on the Akai website if you want more info.

I've seen her use it live twice now, and it is amazing how full a sound she can achieve unaccompanied.

I finally figured out who she was by watching her perform on Conan. She smoked the set both musically and bodily. Holy crap. I think my TV almost melted. Now I see why Keith is into her wink.gif. Bagh now i have to get her CD. I'm never going to have any money.
And Conan IS that tall. He's listed as 6'4 without Emma Thompson's heels on(now that was a funny bit, if a leeeetle bit scary).
keith from ny
Here's a link to a Quicktime video of KT's appearance on Conan, courtesy of PattyNet. This is a little faster than she usually plays Black Horse and the Cherry Tree -- I think she was nervous and started thumping her guitar a little too fast, and then it was too late to turn back, lol. But she carried it off like the pro she is. smile.gif

She is a little thing, reportedly 5'2" without her boots.
GhostWriter
Great vid Keith. Amazing. And wow... is she short. Or Conan is huge. unsure.gif
Carrie
Well I FINALLY know her!! I love her voice and she has grown on me instantly!! Thanks for the video. How cool to be able to see it the same day I got into her music.
WalrusOct9
Well, usually I go for tall chicks, but I'll make an exception this time. wink.gif
kylie jo
It was like Xmas morning watching her on Conan.

Apparently I'm not smart enuf to record it on VHS.

p.s. tall girls suck. smile.gif
Brookd
ftr - conan is, in fact, tall as hell
WalrusOct9
Yeah, I didn't really realize how tall he was until I saw the U2 episode...other than Adam, I don't think any of those guys go much over 5'7". It was kinda funny.

OK, so... I'm such a late bloomer.

I just heard of this chica last week, in a clip on NPR. I got her CD last weekend, and love it. In fact, I want to have her baby.

Why am I always so late to the party?

Bob Lefsetz weighs in:

QUOTE
How come we can't break acts like this in the U.S?

Sure, the U.K. gave us "American Idol". But it also seems to give us the only acts focused on music, not fame.

Now it's not impossible for a musical act to be good-looking. Talk to the truly beautiful. They're crippled by their looks. They live a life quite different from the rest of us. So, I feel sorry for the few genetically blessed. And, if they sang about it, I might be interested. Instead old men in suits glom on to the beautiful but barely talented and turn them into "STARS"!

That's what we've got over here, stars. Not talents.

Talent is something that comes from inside. And I'm not talking about the melisma insanity of Mariah Carey. Talent is an inner mounting flame that we, the listening public, want to get CLOSER to.

Go to: http://www.kttunstall.com/. Click on "Album". Then go down to number 4. Click on the SECOND version of "Black Horse & The Cherry Tree". The LIVE one.

Unfortunately, the video is in the dreaded Windows Media format. And there's not enough bandwidth, the frame keeps freezing. But watch this. You'll experience magic. A U.S. label wouldn't even sign this pixie in dire need of a stylist. With a form-less haircut and the uniform of a college freshman. U.S. execs believe people want someone ABOVE THEM! Someone not only coiffed, but altered surgically, like the aforementioned Mariah Carey and Jessica Simpson and now her sister Ashlee.

But those days are through. Everybody knows who's had plastic surgery. Everybody wants somebody real, whom they can RESPECT! People don't respect the "artists" on today's hit parade. Which is why the business is in the dumper. The business doesn't want anybody real, just somebody who'll play the game. Who'll say how hard they're working going from interview to television show and won't go on record about anything controversial.

Sure, part of KT's performance here is canned. But she's not HIDING IT! She's employing new technology to deliver her message. You assemble the pieces to FREE yourself from the burden of others, you can be YOUR OWN BAND! Which KT is.

Oh, the way she holds the pick in her teeth. THAT'S the kind of girl I want. Someone who isn't doing what she's SUPPOSED to, but what's expedient, what's NATURAL! You can hear not only Tommy Mottola but Clive telling this girl that's crude, and that she can stick the pick on the mic stand. But that's not how she does it at home. And the way KT claps and sings...SHE'S GOT THE MUSIC IN HER! She's POSSESSED! You believe she'd be just this into it if she were in her BEDROOM and NOBODY was watching!

This is not my favorite song on the album. But its performance makes me fall in love with KT. And that's what we used to do. Fall in love with the artists. Even if we were both male. They exuded a coolness. They were outsiders. Playing by their own rules.

Then again, that's no longer the American way. We're not even ENCOURAGING our youth to be challenging outsiders. The ****S who run the companies think THEY'RE the artists and break the will of those they sign, if these no-talents are not complicit to begin with. Shit, a true artist would tell the label head to **** OFF!

But if you tell the label head to **** off today, that you want to do it YOUR way, then they put you in purgatory, to teach you and the OTHER upstarts a lesson. They won't put out your music, and they won't release you, just to **** with you.

And then there are KT's boots. Straight out of Ziggy Stardust. This little fillip sells you. It shows, that KT's a believer in the myth too.

What sold me was hearing "Suddenly I See" on XM's Cafe. It's got the energy of "Meet The Beatles". With a break that makes you want to listen to the record again and again. (Get to the two minute mark and check it out.)

It's Chrissie Hynde without the poise. Not the coolest girl in the room, but someone fighting for NOTICE! And her pure desire hooks us. We can feel what she says in her bio: "I've never had a back-up plan. I was never going to do anything else."

We've got to nurture artistry. We've got to turn the power over to the artists. We have to encourage people to explore, to test the limits. Shit, if the execs were creative THEY'D be the artists. But they're not. Artists don't come from the mainstream. They're different. Loners. And that's why we pay attention. Being outside of us they can reflect and deliver the truth about our world back to us.

Listening to KT Tunstall one can see why the U.K. business is still healthy. Because they still believe in the myth. That an artist is the highest player in the hierarchy. That he can come from nowhere and instruct the populace on life. It's so EXCITING! There's no excitement in the U.S. business. Only statistics and lawsuits.

More like this please.

Amen Steve. That is right on!

I agree with his assessment of KT's talent and delightfully unvarnished charisma, but it's not like she was an overnight sensation in the UK music business -- she's been at this a lot of years. I think she would have eventually made it big if she were from Boston (or even Ohio) too, American musical marketing machine or no.

From what I understand she was rejected by several American labels and was only picked up here after she generated such a buzz in the UK, that's why the album wasn't released here for several months.
keith from ny
I wouldn't have been very impressed by her album if I'd never seen her perform either.

i don't know...i love her album and i've never seen her perform. (and a big F.U. to Schubas sad.gif)
Mr. SoCal
I bought her CD the night before I left on my current trip to the other side of the world. Put it on my iPod without giving it listen first and hopped on the plane for the 18-hour haul to Singapore. It wound up being the only music I listened to on the flight and it's also been getting the occasional listen since my arrival here in India. Can't say that I'm at all disappointed in the purchase.
keith from ny
I know a lot of people who love the album, and it does show her to be a good songwriter, but for me it fails to capture the things I really love about KT -- her gritty and unrestrained singing style, her wonderful guitar playing, her raw energy onstage. The production is really drekky IMO. I never listen to it now that I have some good live recordings, but it's been a huge seller in the UK and I'm sure it will be here too.

I'm with Keith on live recordings. I first heard KT live from Keith's link. Though albums in general are purposely beautiful and often sell the artist to the masses, after I say to myself...ok, I like this artist's style...live is the way to go with me. This includes OTR. I almost NEVER listen to their albums....only the live shows. It's here where the real colors show....mistakes and all.

FTR, while I'm obviously a fan of live recordings, I also love OtR's studio albums and listen to them all the time. I just don't like the production on Eye to the Telescope. It transforms KT from raw and vital to something akin to a pop queen. Those songs sound way better to me with just her and a guitar on Morning Becomes Eclectic. KT doesn't even really need a band, let alone all that gloppy production. And she really holds back on her vocals on the album (which was probably her decision, but I don't have to like it).

I'm not opposed to production per se -- for example, FFR is pretty heavy on production but still manages to preserve OtR's vitality and capture that animal that lives in Karin's voice.

From what I've heard, the next CD KT has coming out this year is a collection of one-takes and will be a lot more casual in terms of its production. smile.gif
