KT is doing a show for PBS' Soundstage which conveniently tapes in Chicago. smile.gif I wasn't going to go (money's a bit tight) but someone from the Beth Orton board had an extra (free, apparently) ticket, so I'll have a full report tomorrow...it's supposed to air in early July, should be good. smile.gif Man I love the internets.

I'm jealous! I hope this will put an end to your complaints about music in Chicago. tongue.gif wink.gif

Enjoy!

Nah, there's been some great stuff here...sometimes it just sucks that Chicago isn't located on the East Coast. wink.gif

enjoy steve. i tried to get some of those but i guess i replied to the e-mail to late. sad.gif

sounded like pretty limited seating, intimate setting. should be fun.
WalrusOct9
It was fairly limited...a few hundred people, mostly contest winners (the people next to me had no idea who KT was, the guy just enters every contest on the WXRT website that looks interesting, apparently).

Pretty much the same setlist I saw in April, except "Dirty Water" was replaced by a new song called "Hollywood Hill" (or 'Hills', i'm not sure). Must've been a last-minute decision, since "Dirty Water" was still on the printed setlist, but apparently it was the first time they'd ever played the song, and it took them a couple of tries to actually get through it. From what she said, it sounded like she was doing some recording out in LA, so maybe we will see that new album by Christmas.

Setlist:
Other Side Of The World
Minature Disasters
Under The Weather
Another Place To Fall
Universe & U
Black Horse & The Cherry Tree
Silent Sea
Hollywood Hills (stopped during the 1st verse after KT forgot the words)
Hollywood Hills
False Alarm
Heal Over (false start)
Heal Over
Stoppin' The Love
Suddenly I See
encore:
One Day
Through The Dark (stopped because of some radio noise)
Through The Dark (stopped again because of monitors)
Through The Dark
Suddenly I See (played again)

It should make for a good broadcast...it was a bit of a sterile enviornment, being a TV studio and not a normal concert venue, and so not as warm and fuzzy as the Park West show in April, but it was shot with 11 cameras in high-def, and the stage had lots of shiny objects so it should be fun to watch. It was kind of amusing to see how they do these broadcasts, and it was complete with a radio station guy talking to the audience and reminding them to act excited and stand up and dance and stuff...I mean i understand why they want that for the broadcast, but wouldn't it have been easier just to sell tickets to KT fans and have them up front rather than just having it be random contest winners? *shrug* There were a few people who seemed to know the music but by and large it was a very random gathering of people. We'll see how it turns out, it's supposed to air towards the end of July. When I find out the exact date I'll post it in here. (so you can all see me look retarded...the girl at the door let me in after the guy with the tickets ended up being really late, so since I was by myself they put me in the 3rd row right in front of KT, so you'll see me either looking retarded or drooling fairly frequently during the broadcast, I'm sure)

Here is a link to KT's in studio on the Current today in the Twin Cities.

Apparently she's been covering The Flaming Lips' "She Don't Use Jelly" at recent shows. Too bad she didn't do it at the TV taping so we'd have a nice recording of it, but there's an amateur video of it on Youtube.

I'm tempted, but I may have to skip out of this one due to financial reasons. (plus the Cardigans show is the next night) As soon as she puts out another album I'll be the first person in line to go see her again, but I imagine it's going to be the same set she's been doing all year, which I've seen twice already. I was hoping she'd have a new disc out by Christmas (I think that was the original plan..."Telescope" is almost 2 years old already in the rest of the world), but with this touring schedule it doesn't seem like that's happening.

But if you haven't seen her yet, go! She's a hell of a lot of fun. (In concert, I mean wink.gif)

Thinking about it, but I really don't like Bogart's--IMO the drive to Newport Music Hall in Columbus would be worth it, but I have obligations on both of those evenings that I don't think I can cancel. Grrr.

Seems silly to say that you don't like Bogart's but you'd drive further for the very similar Newport Music Hall... rolleyes.gif

The only edge NMH has is that the bathrooms aren't downstairs, and now they make the smokers huddle outside in the alley... and sometimes they don't check for tickets and let you walk right in to a sold-out show that you spent too much money for a ticket on eBay and wouldn't have if you'd have known they wouldn't have checked your ticket, you bastards...

Bogart's always wins over Newport Music Hall for me solely for drive time. You're in Germantown, right? It seems like Bogart's would definitely be closer for you, too... eh...

back in the "old days" martin mull wrote a song about the old "great southeast music hall and emporium of performing arts" (where i saw some of the best concerts of my life) called "i've played some shitholes but this place takes the cake". he obviously never played bogart's.

but, a "shithole" will rarely stop me from seeing a show i really want to see. so...i'll prob still try to catch KT there anyway.

Well, my preference is on several grounds, and the neighborhood isn't one of the factors. I think the acoustics are better by a good margin, and, as you noted, the security aren't quite as Nazi-like as Bogart's (in my experience, at least, though I've only been to the Newport once). Much better chance of preserving the event for posterity than at Bogart's, I think (she hasn't yet adopted a formal taping policy that I'm aware of, but allows shows to be traded on her forum. I take that to mean open-taping is probably not going to be actively supported, but if you can get away with taping, it's fine). Yes, Bogart's would be closer. But I drove to Pittsburgh to see Steve Howe (for similar reasons) rather than catch him at Bogart's.
keith from ny
I wish I could see KT at Bogart's instead of the Electric Factory -- 3000 drunken kids in a smoke-filled warehouse with a concrete floor, raised stage and crappy acoustics, manned by a very surly security crew. Truly my least favorite venue.
WalrusOct9
Yeah, the venue she's doing in Chicago isn't exactly my favorite either. The security people at the Riv are real assholes, and the sound isn't great.

She's definitely scaled the venues up this leg...she started out the year playing OTR-sized places and now she's doing the Riviera, which holds well over 2,000. No idea if she'll sell it out, but it's kind of disappointing after she absolutley blew me away at the Park West in April (which, conversely, is the best sounding venue in the city and holds about 1,100). I won't really complain if she's playing there after her next album comes out, but I think it might be a letdown seeing her do the same set for a 3rd time in a so-so venue. But I think the people who are going to see her for the first time still won't be disappointed...she's great live. It's just...bigger now.
«°¤°»
Yo, Steve... speaking of Chicago venues... how's The Vic? I'll be seeing Peeping Tom (and the Dub Trio) there next week...

~fff - np: john zorn - spillane/two-lane highway/forbidden fruit
WalrusOct9
The Vic is awesome. I've seen some amazing shows there...Beth Orton, Paul Weller, Doves, the Charlatans. Probably the second best venue in Chicago. smile.gif (I'm not counting Schubas since it's about the size of a living room)

It's even better when they don't put up those stupid barriers between the audience and the stage. They had them for Weller, but not for Beth Orton, so for Beth we were literally just leaning on the stage right in front of her...that's the way to see a show. But either way, I think you'll like it...it holds about 800, maybe a little more, but feels nice and cosy on the floor. (i've never been in the balcony or in the back of the room but it's still pretty small) I think you'll like it. smile.gif

I second Steve's opinion on the The Vic. The crowds there are really good, and the place has a good vibe.
«°¤°»
Cool... hopefully Mike Patton'll be sporting his pimp suit... and I'll get up close at the Vic... smile.gif For how much he tours in whatever band incarnation he's in at the time, this will surprisingly be only the third time seeing him (Faith No More '97 & Tomahawk '03 being the other two)... oh wait, I'm illin'... it'll be my fifth time. I almost forgot the two Mr Bungle shows in '00... mmm... Bungle... oh, duh... sixth time (another Tomahawk in '03, opening for Tool). Loud Patton noises apparently fuck with my 'membering capa-ma-bilities... I almost went to see a one-off trio show of Mike Patton, alto-sax-ist John Zorn and a trumpeter (maybe Dave Douglas) in Boulder, CO... but that ended up being "cost prohibitive"... Nary a Patton in Fantômas show, though... sad.gif Unless I'm forgetting... laugh.gif huh.gif blink.gif

Well, enough of this hijack...

I need to hear the Peeping Tom album one of these days.

Really though, I wish he'd just go back to rocking. I listened to Angel Dust the other day and it was amazing.
WalrusOct9
Well, I hope you all haven't actually bought this CD yet, because apparently Virgin is releasing a "deluxe/let's rip off the fans edition" of Eye To The Telescope at the end of August. No idea what's going to be on it, but it's already listed on Amazon and a few other sites with a not-so-friendly list price of $25. So if you haven't already bought this I'd just go to your nearest P2P program and get it that way until the cash-in edition comes out.
WalrusOct9
Oooo, I almost forgot...in brighter KT news, her PBS Soundstage episode airs tonight at 10 PM (in some cites. Check http://www.pbs.org/wttw/soundstage/ for your city.

An excellent performance from KT on Soundstage I thought, although her guitar was mixed way too low and I was a little disappointed she was wearing pants. Hmmm, that really didn't sound right ... I mean, I just prefer the skirt & leg-warmers thing.

It's amazing how much staying power that core repertoire of ETTT songs has, I still enjoy listening to KT perform them live (and she still manages to sing them with a lot of conviction). I like the new one Hollywood Hill pretty well although it's not among her best IMO -- that little "Nothing in my mind" interlude is cool.

I thought I saw the back of Steve's head a couple of times. smile.gif
WalrusOct9
Yeah, you see the back of my head a lot. laugh.gif

Her guitar was really high in the mix...her other guitarist is kind of useless though, sorry...you can rarely actually hear his guitar, and he doesn't do anything particularly creative behind playing basic chords. But the rest of her band is really tight, especially the rhythm section, and her keyboard player always seems to be having a lot of fun.
keith from ny
QUOTE(WalrusOct9 @ Jul 30 2006, 03:55 AM) *
Her guitar was really high in the mix...

Not after the PBS engineers got through with it, unfortunately.
WalrusOct9
Hmmm, I dunno...i could hear her loud and clear. Her other guitarist was barely there, visually or aurally. I'll listen again once I finish downloading that DVD...

She doesn't need Steve Vai or anything, but I think she could really use a clever guitarist who knows how to add really cool, innovative guitar parts that add to the music but dont get in the way of KT's vocals or the song itself. But thats just me.
Brookd
oh, dude, I wish I had known you were there! I would have looked for you while I watched it last night.

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Special Deluxe Edition of KT Tunstall's critically acclaimed debut release. CD includes bonus track "Immune" from One Night in Gaia performance. KT Tunstall "Live In the USA" DVD includes five live songs from her show in Washington D.C. on June 9, 2006 plus every video from "Eye To The Telescope."

Price? $22.99. For an album everyone already has. Someone explain to me why they can't just sell the DVD seperately? I wonder if KT even knows about this release...

Anna Nalick has a new version of Wreck of the Day with different songs than the US or Japanese release. Drink Me is on the Japanese release, but I don't think it's the demo version...so for a mere $14.99 I can own three songs that I don't have with her orginal release, single and Japanese release. However, there's new artwork...I guess she looked to all American girl on the original so they've given her a new bad girl image:

1. Breathe (2 Am)
2. Citadel
3. Paper Bag
4. Wreck of the Day
5. Satellite
6. Forever Love (Digame)
7. In the Rough
8. In My Head
9. Bleed
10. Catalyst
11. Consider This
12. Wreck of the Day

13. Drink Me [Demo Version]
14. Soldier [Demo Version]
15. More Than Melody [Demo Version]

At least on this one, I feel justified in buying it used...

Tracks in July is Katie Tunstall's (this was before she became "KT") earlier self-produced/published CD from some years back. She used to give it away at her shows. It's not very good and nothing like what she does now, so don't pay for it -- I'll do B&P for anyone who really wants it, although I don't have any artwork.
