When I first heard this, my daughter (pailblueyes)was blown away by it, but I was not. As I've continued to listen to ASR, I've been sucked in by this really unique take on the classic Beatles song. OtR seems to really have a knack for covering a song and making it "their own."

First time I heard it was in Bruce's car after the Bogart's show when it was released... I asked Bruce who originally did the song. huh.gif

I'm an idiot. I, quite frankly, didn't get any Beatles albums past Abbey Rd & Srgt Peppers until early 2000... eh... I made up for that lack of basic musical knowledge blunder...

haha......

*feels like this thread could go in a completely different direction, but embraces it*

When I was a kid, at my first real job... I got into a conversation with some older guys about music.... one of the guys goes, "best guitarist... jimi hendrix".... I go..... "who?"

*crickets*

I absolutely love the arrangement/performance of Blackbird on Amateur Shortwave Radio. Can't say I've ever reconciled myself to their version of Ruby Tuesday though.

Btw, Jimi Hendrix looked like this:

I lurve this cover -- it may possibly be my favorite song on the album.

And i'm a huge fan of the Beatles original -- but am convinced that Karin can only make a good thing better. smile.gif

Sarah McLachlan covered Blackbird during her "Afterglow" tour last year. I loved the way she did it (although it was very true to the original). As she was playing it at the Toronto show, there were fireworks going off near the lake. She and her guitarist were just mesmerized watching them while they played/sang. That show is the show that was taped for the DVD and they do a great job of capturing the moment.

I think the OtR version was just so.... unexpected. I had to actually think of it as another song. Now I love it.

And thanks for the photo Keith.... anyone ever hear of a band called the Rolling Stones? I hear they're pretty big these days.....

ghost - about jimi hendrix. i was one of the youngest kids in the neighborhood. i was talking to this older guy one day, and he seemed really bummed out, and I said, what's the matter, you seem really bummed out? and he said, "Jimi Hendrix died today. and i said, who's Jimi Hendrix?"

so he told me as best he could who hendrix was, and that he played at Woodstock. I saved up my allowance, and when i finally had enough to buy my first album, my parents were away, and i was staying in town at my dad's parents. I asked my grandfather to drive me in his big old jaguar to Modell's to so that I could buy Woodstock (which had taken place about 100 miles away). He wouldn't take me...thought the album content was not appropriate for me.

After my parents came home, my dad drove me there, and I bought Woodstock, my first LP.
