Due to her last name and family, I listened to the snippets on amazon.com of her new cd and dug what little I heard. Almost 3 months ago I bought the cd and it's still a major player in the truck stereo, I absolutely love it. Her voice is totally original and the woman can write a song, yo.

So, Martha, welcome to your own topic, hugely deserved and way delayed.

The video for When The Day Is Short is pretty cool, btw. And there's a free mp3 download for her song Lolita (not on the cd) on amazon.

Lolita mp3 (thanks, amazon)

Rufus and Martha Wainwright are brother and sister. Their father is Loudon Wainwright III. Their mother is Kate McGarrigle; their aunt is Anna McGarrigle. Kate and Anna have recorded and toured together for many years, and have written hit songs for artists such as Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.

Anna's husband Dane Lanken was once, along with Kate and Anna, a member of the Mountain City Four. He occasionally makes an appearance in Kate and Anna's concerts (he's got this really cool, incredibly deep voice), as does daughter Lily Lanken, and the aforementioned Martha Wainwright. (I believe that Rufus has also appeared with the McGarrigles, but I've never witnessed this.)

Older sister Jane McGarrigle has also, on occasion, recorded and performed with Kate and Anna.

Loudon Wainwright III later married Suzzy Roche, who, along with sisters Maggie and Terre, recorded and performed as The Roches. Younger brother David has appeared with them at times, doing his own set as well as singing during the Roches set.

The Roches haven't toured as a trio for quite some time, but Suzzy has continued to record, and has toured with sister Maggie. Lucy (Suzzy and Loudon's daughter, has sang along with Maggie and Suzzy during a few of their songs in concert.

Loudon Wainwright's third-cousin-twice-removed is June Carter Cash, of the famous....just kidding

Damn, yo. Although those kind of connections are often as much of a blessing as a curse, although at least their father wasn't as famous as Lennon or Dylan. Although I've never heard of any of those people except for Rufus.

A review from Australia:

The Basement, August 28

According to family legend, Martha Wainwright's elder brother Rufus once walked into his sister's bedroom, stared into her mirror and declared he was the prettiest. Though Martha has since said he may well have been right, it is still a matter of debate.

But another Rufus declaration, earlier this year at the Enmore Theatre where the siblings were playing a family show with their mother and aunt, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, is not in dispute. With some wonder and admiration, mirroring the response of many in the room, Rufus declared Martha to be "a force of nature". He was right.

Martha Wainwright's voice has light trills and dark valleys; it rumbles but it also leaps and skips; it has commanding power and moments of breathy ephemera. There are times when you are sure she's somehow crossed Kate Bush and a qwaali singer, other times when you think if Janis Joplin had had Tim Buckley instead of Leonard Cohen in the Chelsea Hotel, this is what their offspring might have sounded like.

This first of three shows this week from Wainwright (with a support act in the charming and song-rich Josh Ritter you should not miss) was packed with examples. Take the kick inside of I Will Internalise, which began the night, and the late arriving punch of Bloody Motherf---ing Asshole, which closed out the main set. Each comes to you with disarming gentleness and when you drop your guard slams into your psyche with devastating effect. Waves of "where did that come from?" ran through the room.

Similarly in TV Show, where Wainwright begins by describing herself as "not such a good lover/I'm a better talker", there's a gentleness even as she completes that line with "so when you touch me there/I'm scared that you'll see/Not the way that I don't love you/But the way that I don't love myself". But as the song builds, the rawness of emotion spills over the gentleness the way an overfilled dam tips into the spillway: it can't be stopped.

The rest of the truth of brother Rufus's line, though, comes in the realisation that Wainwright is not always in control. She is by comparison with most singers who harness and focus their (more limited) instruments, loose and capable of missteps, of oversinging and overshooting.

Sensible people would tell her to tighten up, and maybe one day she will. But sensible people can't give you the stunning surprises and thrilling rush Martha Wainwright can. Sensible people may have talent, but they're not a force of nature.

plus Martha is going to be at the Fitzgerald Theater here in St. Paul early March(11?) with Tracy Bonham, besides opening for Neko Case on the 29th in Minneapolis. The Fitzgerald is the home to Prairie Home Companion.

I just got her CD a couple of weeks ago, and really like it.

From Rounder Records:

Martha Wainwright to Release 'I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too,' June 10 on Zoë/Rounder Records
(Posted 03/03/08)

Burlington, MA – On June 10, Martha Wainwright will release I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too (Zoë/Rounder), the follow up to her critically lauded eponymous debut album. On her sophomore release, she strikes a perfect balance between intense passion and understatement. The album’s lyrics effortlessly juxtapose symbolism and dreaminess with literal straightforwardness.

Wainwright is one of the most respected artists in music today, so it’s no surprise that some of the biggest names in music leapt at the chance to work on I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too. Pete Townshend, The Band’s Garth Hudson, and Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen make appearances on the album as well as members of Martha’s über-talented family, including brother Rufus, mother Kate McGarrigle, aunt Anna McGarrigle, and first cousin Lily Lanken. The 14 song album has 12 originals plus unique takes on the early Pink Floyd classic “See Emily Play” and the Eurythmics' “Love is A Stranger.”

The daughter of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, Martha has spent her entire life surrounded by music. In addition to touring with Snow Patrol, Stephen Malmus, Gomez, Neko Case, and The Swell Season, she has also recorded and toured extensively with family members, most notably with her brother Rufus. Barry Walters in Rolling Stone wrote, “If you think Rufus Wainwright possesses an uncommonly expressive voice, check out his sister.”

After a few independent EP’s Martha released her first full length album, Martha Wainwright (Zoë/Rounder) in 2005, to rave reviews. With Q Magazine writing, “Her voice is a thing of wonder,” Mojo added “This is special, many-layered stuff.”

I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too is even more special, and shows that Martha Wainwright-singer, songwriter, unique artist, has arrived.
