anybody else try it? i'm quite fond of the new diet soda. i actually think that i like it better than regular coke, and it should make diet coke go hide in a very dark corner......under a large piece of furniture.....and covered in trash.

a note to drew: i do hope that a topic on soda may be allowed in the general food chatter forum. if you find that i have inappropriately placed it here, please feel free to make its home elsewhere......television or something.

Phenylalinine is a very, very, very, very, very, very VE$RY evil product. I cannot endorse it, and the FDA and all those guilty parties will pay for the damage they have allowed to happen to those of us who have suffered needlessly so they could get rich at our expense!

Rant off!
DJDelicious
okay, you'll have to explain. i've not been informed. why is it a a very, very, very, very, very, very VE$RY evil product?
DustyVolume
Well, without getting into a very long reply. Just do a search on any search engine for the harmful effects of nutrasweet.

You'll find everything from memory loss to blindness and siezures to the onset of fibro myalgia (sp?).

It's essentially a poison that reacts differently in different peoples bodies. Some people have taken 30 years to show signs, others (like me) six months or less. I lost approximately 25% of my short term memory last year, and still have about 5-10% un-regained. I may never get it back.

It's horrible really, and just because you don't have any symptoms now, doesn't mean you won't have any later. Losing your cognitive functioning is one of the most horrible things that can happen to you. Really.

I tell anyone who asks--and some who don't--that you're playing russian roulette by drinking that stuff--and whatever you do--DO NOT put in in coffee, or anything hot. At a certain temperature, it turns into wood alcohol which can be lethal to our bodies...

It'll be the next "cigarette ad campaign" in 30 more years--just wait.

isn't it actually spelled: phenylalanine
there are also studies that the product should not be used by pregnant and nursing women.

i too have had bad reactions to consuming items containing this product.

the lead singer of the once big time zion group guardian lost his voice and had to go through medical treatment and physical therapy to get his throat back in gear after it began swelling up.
QUOTE
There have been reports that L-phenylalanine can promote high blood pressure in those predisposed to hypertension. Therefore, it is important to start off using moderate doses of phenylalanine, about 500 mg a day, and slowly work up to 1500 mg a day. Monitoring in the first few months on phenylalanine can detect blood pressure increases in the minority of people who will have this symptom. In fact, a Chinese study demonstrated the possible implication of phen-ylalanine in hypertension. The study looked at rat offspring whose parents and grandparents had essential hypertension (without known cause or preexisting renal disease) and stroke and compared them to those without a genetic predisposition to essential hypertension. By comparing the radioactive counts of phenylalanine and concentration in blood and tissue after administration of a phenylalanine substance, the researchers found that "A unique aberrant of metabolic kinetics of phenylalanine might be implicated in the inherited pathogenesis of essential hypertension and stroke . . . ." (Zhao et al. 2001).

Phenylalanine can promote the cell division of existing malignant melanoma cells. If you have melanoma, or any other form of cancer for that matter, avoid phenylalanine. According to a study in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, three patients with metastatic melanoma and three with metastatic breast cancer took part in a study that involved a diet of phenylalanine and tyrosine administered at a very low dose (10 mg/kg/day for 1 month). The results were not good. Researchers reported that all the patients experienced anxiety and depression and other side effects. They also lost weight. The authors of this pilot study concluded: "Low phenylalanine and tyrosine diets do not appear to be a viable treatment option for patients with advanced cancer" (Harvie et al. 2002).

Persons who have PKU (phenylketonuria) cannot use phenylalanine. This includes those born with a genetic deficiency that prevents them from metabolizing phenylalanine (Walter et al. 2002).

I haven't tried it myself, but these are some possibilities:

bloating
abdominal pain
gas
nausea
diarrhea
headaches
migraines (severe headaches)
heart palpitations (fluttering, irregular heartbeats)
shortness of breath
depression or overwhelming anxiety
spaced-out or drugged sensation
joint pain
dizziness

according to this web site.

And then there's this...
DJDelicious
i just thought i'd go ahead and say my goodbyes now since there is a possibility that i will be stricken with and brought to ruin from one or more of the side effects from both splenda and phenylalanine due to the long running consumption that i have had (and enjoyed) for many years.

the good news is, is that perhaps my memory will fail (side effect), and by the time of my demise, i will not remember the glorious people in my life (many in this fine orchard), so i will feel little separation anxiety from them when i pass. consequently, i will most likely forget to tell you farewell at that time.

so then....it's been nice knowing you. man, i'm going to miss you.

I only know that if I were drinking soda I wouldn't put chlorinated sugar into my body no matter what the government told me.

I love this. How do you know if you lose 25% of your short term memory? And how do you know that 5-10% still is un-regained? Did you leave yourself notes like in Memento and then have quizzes administered?

I'm with DJ, I'm all for it. As long as it tastes so yummy, and heck - a side effect is losing weight? Jeesh, they might as well say a side effect is getting laid more!

great question. and if you really lost it, wouldn't you have forgotten that you lost it? but seriously, how can you measure the exact percentage of memory loss or memory gain. or was this a diagnosis from a doctor? and wouldn't a 25% memory loss in a single year be virtually catastrophic, just how much nutrasweet would you need to ingest? just curious now that bruce mentioned it...

Blatant honesty ahead, take heed:

I've heard all the studies on NutraSweet. And on how saccharine gives you cancer. There is actually a condition people are born with called PKL (I think K is the middle initial...I'm not sure), and those people can actually die from ingesting even a small amount of phenylalanine. In fact, if you look on the side of that can of Diet Coke, you'll see a warning to "Phenylaneutronics", or something. I'm sure I misspelled it.

I could preach about the health dangers of it (even though I use Equal in my coffee...no sudden death yet ::fingers crossed:smile.gif, but my main problem with most NutraSweet products is that they taste like ASS*.

I mean, if I tried really hard, I don't think I could make something that tastes worse than Diet Coke. Coke is already so sweet...why would you want it to taste *sweeter*?!?! Seriously, the popularity of Diet Coke baffles me to no end. It is the grossest sh*t I've ever put in my mouth. Seriously. I'm serious.

So no, I haven't tried Coke Zero. I try to steer clear of Coke in general in that the worst thing for you in Coke isn't the sugar or cancer-inducing sugar substitutes, but the phosphoric acid...the acid that can clean you engine, dissolve a tooth in a few days, and strip the paint off your walls. I'm convinced that my "acid reflux" is partly due to my rampant Coke abuse during my teen years. If I don't take Nexium beforehand, I can't even drink one without going into agony.

*those of you who are about to make the joke, "how do you know what ass tastes like" can save your breath. it's just a figure of speech.

Just a quick note since I'm time crunched lately. My memory loss was diagnosed with the help of my doctor and nurse practitioner. Of course there is no way to gauge accurately, but just based on the things I was forgetting, and the parts of my life that were missing, this is what we arrived at.

Of course, I could have actually forgotten the number, so, please don't take me at my word. I'm obviously untrustable in this area. tongue.gif

And it seems that my doctor told me that the nutrasweet kills the neural connections in our brains, and not the cells themselves, so we upped my b vitamins (I think) to help promote more growth between the connections.

Imagine if the goverment banned Diet Colas.
Would we go crazy and sell it underground and start snorting it like Coke?

Coke Zero ... I read about it here, and Coke products were on sale at Kroger, so ...

OMG. It's soooooooooooooooo good!!!!! I'd even pay full-price (and if you know me at all, I do not pay retail for ANYTHING, ever!). Oh, this is good stuff. And I know that because I really like it, it will disappear. *Sniff*
