i get a kick out of watching people pick their melons and talking about their theory. my style is to just go for a long cute one. red, with seeds. i spit. cold and pre-diced (usually). they were always a staple at the 4th family reunions, with picnic tables covered in newspaper, juice running down your arms.

has anyone seen a cubed melon yet? i remember reading something about those a few years ago. from japan, maybe? the melons are placed in a crate while still on the vine. producing the desired shape to facilitate shipping and storage.

get out of my way, i gotsta pee !

I had never heard about the square melons, so I googled it.
They look like giant candles.
Somehow, it's just not the same summertime staple.

wtf ? i don't remember seeing pictures of them. those are the oddest looking things ever. spraypaint some spots and they'd look like dice to me.

those are just *wrong*!

for me, i like the seedless ones, cut up or in circles from a melon baller, cold, straight from the fridge. yummy...

but why can't i find seedless watermelons in west virginia? if only i was back home when my dad bought my groceries and there was always watermelon and fresh strawberries...

i just googled too, trudes. did you see those prices?!? in japan a regualr watermelon costs $15-25, and those cube melons are $82. that artice was from 2001. http://archives.cnn.com/2001/WORLD/asiapcf...are.watermelon/

i guess i shouldn't complain about paying $4.99. and just for the record, the "pick the cute one" didn't work out today, its a dud. next time i'll opt for plan B: ask a cute grey-haired grandmother to pick another one out for me.

The fields here in Knox Co. are full of plants, but no melons yet. However, the produce markets that dot the roads will soon be open and full to bursting. I'll have to get some pics of broken melons along the roadside as well ... another familiar summertime site.
