Weather is just not cooperating up here, but I'm sitting on 100 this week with the weekend to go. Today's ride was just silly. It was cold (37) and so windy that on the way back, into the wind, I noticed my speedo dip into single digits during wind gusts (of up to 30mph). Climbing hills (not even big ones) into the wind I thought the bike was going to start rolling back down the hill. I just keep tellin' myself it's not going to last much longer.... I hope.

Lord willing and knock on wood, this is shaping up to be a good season! biggrin.gif

That's really impressive, that you're getting out in that kind of weather... it's going to pay off for you, ya know.

I did 25+ tonight, around the standard weekday riding spot in Charlotte (called the Booty Loop.... don't ask). I didnt do badly, but I keep getting sucked into riding too fast when someone passes me or when my (much more experienced) friends start pulling. I looked down today, we're on this little deceptive uphill at the end of the loop, but we're still doing 22 and my heart rate is almost 180. I finally backed off after a few laps of that and got some base in again... but I need to work on doing that from the get-go.

Fun, though!

Rode today on my new wheels. I was a little disappointed, honestly. Maybe it was just the headwind on the way out, but there was no noticable difference in weight, as I was told there would be. They're twenty spokes in the back, 16 in the front, bladed, slightly high profile rims. I can't quite figure out who makes them--the decal says "eleven81," and apparently they're made by the same guy who makes Neuvation wheels, or they're the same as those, but with a different name. They came highly recommended, at least as being a really good deal. Here's a link to see them (scroll down a bit): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...bayphotohosting.

I'm disappointed by a couple of things. First, I can't seem to fit the magnet for my computer on the spokes, since there are so few and they're angled so much more than conventional spokes. Second, after one 15 mile ride there is already a slight wobble in the rear wheel. Maybe it's just that it needs to be tightened up or something, but I just don't understand why bikes can't be made to last longer. I'm really ticked off. At this point I don't care if the wheel weighs 5 lbs, I just want something that will stay round longer than 100 miles.

Congrats Dre. Concerning the magnet... I have 20/24 count wheels. In order to get the magnet close to the receiver I had to put the receiver pretty close to the hub. This is different from my last bike. Try different positions of the magnet/receiver to see if you can get a hook up.

About the rear wheel. You probably already know this, but there is usually an ever so slight "wobble" in the wheel to begin with. If you don't have this, then your cones are likely too tight and wearing out your bearings. That tiny bit of "wobble" can be taken out with the quick release lever. When I put my wheels on my bike I make sure the QR levers are just tight enough to hold the wheel on the bike. Then I check for the "wobble". If I feel it I tighten up the QR a bit until I don't feel the wobble. This tells me I've got the tension about right. Doesn't take much, btw.

If the "wobble" is detectable on a truing stand, then it's likely a spoke problem and disregard everything I said above.

Hope you have better luck! Keep riding baby.

And Troy, sounds like you got caught up there for a few minutes. Happens to me all the time. That's why I try to only ride with the group two or three times a week and treat those rides as tempo rides. Otherwise I have to take it easy the other days and end up getting dropped.

C'mon Spring!!! biggrin.gif

So, this morning was one of the weekly rides with our usual gang. 8:00 am, it was in the low 50s here and dry. I was up at 6:30 am, made coffee, checked with the girlie in whether she wanted to ride... at 7:00 am I text-messaged the leader of the ride and said, "Super tired. Bailing. Have fun." Then slept 'til 10 am.

Does that count as miles put in, since I thought about it? laugh.gif

Friday the 13th was my lucky day.

I got my wheel issue straightened out, for now. I participated in my third bike race, and I finished, and I didn't crash, which is an improvement over my first two races. It was an odd kind of race, the only one of its kind I've ever seen. 500 meters, straight road with a slight dip in the middle, heats of 6-8, winner advances and 2-4th places go to a "repechage" round. I came in third twice, and fourth once, I think. Not bad for the shape I'm in, I feel. I'm just thankful I didn't crash, honestly.

I was scared of that in the first round, so I went out fast and led everyone, and started thinking, "I'm the man!" But two guys passed me in the last 150 yards. The other two I took it easy at first and followed wheels, but that didn't work either.

Troy, I can hardly ever ride in the morning; I don't understand why all the weekend group rides are in the early morning--I guess to avoid crazy drivers? I'd much rather go in the late afternoon. So I won't look down on you for sleeping in.
GhostWriter
Glad to hear you had a good day racing Dre... I've never tried that.

Morning rides are hard for me too. Got a nice one (50) in yesterday with the group. Actually two of us headed west (the harder, hillier route) and the rests went east, but it was cold! I'm trying to ride more with the group on Saturday mornings this year, but we'll see how it goes.

Morning rides are to avoid traffic to some degree sure.... but it's also get get it out of the way so you can be lazy the rest of the day. wink.gif

Around here early morning starts for group rides are (in part) to avoid the heat of the day. Sure works in reverse when the temp is 35 though.... brrr.....

Close to 40 Saturday, close to 30 yesterday. My heart rate is a little out of control, but my legs are doing fine (though tired).

'Tis the season again! I'm lovin' it. smile.gif

Very cool Troy. Keep getting those miles. They'll pay big later in the season.

Weather is starting to cooperate here. Had absolutely perfect weather for a long one Saturday. Today it looks like it wants to rain, but I'm going to try to get out with the group.

Dre? Julie? How's it going?

I haven't been up there since last summer, but I can try to make it up there next weekend.

Tonight I did 62 km, my longest yet this year. The speed is coming along a little.

There is some cool stuff there John.... how do you upload to it? Or do you just manually enter everything?

Polar has a site that allows my computer to upload to it... but I think the journal on their site is pretty bare bones. This one looks WAY better.

PS - did 40 on Saturday, 35 or so on Sunday.... as of this weekend, it feels like I cycle again. Must have crossed the magic line. Not fast, mind you... but very comfy and enjoying the bike a lot. smile.gif

Comfy and enjoying is good Troy! Way to go...

The bikejournal site IS awesome. Tons of great stuff there. I upload my ride data from my Garmin Edge 305 to the Garmin software (like you do with the Polar I presume). I add the info manually to bikejournal. There are a lot of members from my local club who log to BJ.com. The rankings are a bit addictive (but mainly motivating) and the forum is a trove of great info. I've found the solution to quite a few questions I've had over the past few months on that forum. You can tweak it to your personal tastes also. I tend to log more data, where some may only log a few things. I've also taken to posting the occasional ride photo to my journal there.

Ride on,
J
GhostWriter
Btw, if you sign up for BJ.com Troy, that'd be three of us, that I'm aware of, on there. That being the case, I'll start an official "Orchard Club" on there for us. Just a "virtual club" mind you, but fun nonetheless. I'm a member of three clubs on there: My local BC (Ann Arbor), Club Hypoxia and Team Bikejournal. I log my AA miles to the AA club obviously, but log the rest of my miles to the other two. I log really hilly nasty rides to Club Hypoxia and everything else to Team Bikejournal. The Orchard Club would be a great way for you, Dre and myself (and maybe Julie eventually?) to keep track of one another on there.

This is about running, not cycling, but it seemed like the best place to post. Went out today for a 4.5 mile run late today trying to finish up before the sun set, on my usual route. I was listening to Kent's Disc 2 of his latest compilation and, somewhere between 2 beautiful songs, I heard windchimes to my right, got the sweet fragrance of clover from my left, the sun was setting, and there was a cool breeze. The run felt strong and at the end of it all I wound up knocking my time back down to 11.1 minute mile. What a beautiful way to start the night ~ life is good.

Now off to work...

So, I looked forward all day yesterday to participating in a faster ride for 25 miles last night, to which a friend of mine invited me. Should have averaged close to 20mph, which would have been great training. Well, 5.5 miles into it she (my friend) blew a spoke, and her wheel was seriously out of true. So, I rode back with her so she wouldn't have to go it alone against traffic.

A whopping 11 miles at a breathtaking 15mph pace. THAT'S what I was after, baby!

Does anyone know the comparison in durability between conventional 32/36 spoke wheels and the wheels introduced in the past few years that have fewer spokes. I can't really find anything written about it, but the fact that the pros use conventional wheels in the cobbled classics like Paris-Roubaix makes me think they must be stronger. Honestly some of the roads around here make me think there should be a classic race through upstate South Carolina.

I'm no expert on this, but I did research and by wheels for my fiance last year and I learned a bit about this. I think it's a matter of wheel quality, not spoke count. That is, you can buy 36 spoke wheels that will break a lot or don't and 16 wheel spokes that break a lot or don't.

I have Bontrager xLites, 16 spokes front and rear, and have (knocking on wood here) never busted a spoke in 2 years. I love the wheels, though I think they're a bit toward the race side rather than the ride side.

The ones I bought for Lee (fiance) are Amercan Classic Sprint 350s, 28/32 spoke count front/rear, and she hasn't had a problem in a year either. Now, her wheels by the way are cadillacs in terms of comfort compared to mine, and her rims weigh practically nothing. But those wheels, Dre, are particularly known for their durability over any road terrain... they were written up in Bicycling Mag last month as the best "all-around" wheel for the money... a set is around $750, so it's a good value.

Long answer to a short question: research the wheel, and I think you'll find that whether a particular spoke count is reliable depends on the particular make of the wheel. But I'll tell you if you're looking for wheels to ride the roads, as opposed to racing, I'd recommend the 350s. It's also, however, a matter of your own 'look' preference... I mean, the 16-spoke wheels look faster, even if they're not. So, I can sit back as she's passing me and think, "yeah, but I probably look WAY cooler." smile.gif

Edited to add: and Dre, dude... we HAVE to ride some this season. Let me know what your plans are.

Along the same lines, a re-post of the wheels I mentioned earlier... and here's the Bicycle magazine comments on them. Tough, light, and comfy wheels!

I'm going into my third season on American Classic's Sprint 350 wheelset. At $750 and around 1,400 grams, they're the best all-around hoops I've ever used. They accelerate with snap, don't squish under hard cornering, hold speed well when you're settling in for a long bout of near red-zone suffering, and aren't pushed by crosswinds. They're also durable: I ride a lot of gravel and dirt roads, rough railroad track crossings, and take frequent shortcuts through parks, lawns, ditches and construction sites. Late last season I popped a rear spoke, but that's the only mishap I've had in more than 11,000 miles-I haven't even had to true them once. I'll happily take that kind of record. - By Bill Strickland, Bicycle Mag.

OK, so... I ran a little 5K race yesterday, for an average time, and didn't push it.... so my legs were fine today, if just a *wee* bit tired. But nothing major. I went to bed early, drank water, got up this morning and ate a whole wheat bagel w/ peanut butter, drank coffee and water, got on the bike with salt tabs, gel/fig newtons, and fuel in my water bottles.

I went out to ride 60 with a group, and was doing great right up to mile 47-48 or so... and on a long gradual uphill totally bonked. Totally. My heartrate went outta control after that, and I could never really recover. In the end, a friend or two came back and rode with me and ushered me in, and of course I finished the 60 (and I'm fine with it! except that I hate holding people back... I asked repeatedly that they go ahead, but they wouldn't). But I really wish I knew the physiology of it, and what I did wrong. Dehyrdated, maybe? In the end, I cramped when I stood, my heart thumped too fast, and I just had no legs.

Craziness.

Still, a good ride, and my longest of the season... had only done 40 otherwise this year. I'm going to go do the same (hilly, hilly) ride next week if I can. Dang it! smile.gif

Sounds like a rough ride Troy. Had one of those last fall. Century. 40 mile in. Nothing left. Mine was completely fuel related. I filled the tank at the next stop (pb&j sandwiches, yo) and was able to finish strong. Sounds to me like you may have done more than "bonk" (which I understand to be a "running out" of sustainable fuel). Hopefully, with proper nutrition and hydration (which it sounds like you've got going), you'll be fine on the next ride. Trial and error will most likely let you know what happened on this particular ride.

Glad you're getting out! smile.gif

I'm no expert, but if I were doing 60 miles, I'd have more than a bagel to eat beforehand.

The only time I really bonked was 3 or 4 years ago, when I spent the day working in the yard, drank some lemonade, and then went on a fast group ride 30-40 miles, and really didn't think I'd make it home. I think it was mainly dehydration with me.

I think you're probably right. And I think I was dehydrated as well.... someone mentioned to me that dehydration starts over the course of a couple of days, so cramming water the night before and the day of may not suffice. I just need to plan better.

Get back out there, boys!

I don't eat much before any ride (that's not advice, btw). For centuries I usually eat a couple bowls of cereal. After my initial "bonk" experience on my first one I've taken to eating more frequently during the ride. I've got two centuries in the past few weeks with no major problems. The first one this year I felt very strong, but I did get a little fatigued after 80 Saturday. Food helped, but I think I was just working very hard in the wind. Have another one planned for this Saturday, then I won't be able to go long for about three weeks. Looks like about 50% of the weekends this summer will be longer rides for moi.

Tis the season!

New PR. 125 miles yesterday. Got to ride with one of the strongest riders in our club (he's ONLY got about 4000 miles so far this year). He pulled me and another rider through all those miles at 18+mph. Got rained on for about 40 miles, but it was completely worth hanging on to his back wheel.

The third rider in our group yesterday crashed at 80 miles. Nothing broken, but it was really scary. He went down at 20+mph and got torn up quite a bit. Helmet was cracked in about three or four places. He ran into my rear wheel after I slowed and veered away from an oncoming dog. Scared the heck out of me, but when I turned around and saw him on the street I was even more scared. Fortunately we assessed that the damage was not what it could've been. We waited about an hour for his wife to sag him in. Talked to him last night and he sounded well. He even talked about riding with the group this coming week. I was so relieved. This is, indeed, a dangerous sport.

After the crash, I was having trouble staying focused on riding. But the other guy (the leader) took care of that. He started hammering even faster all the way back. Average speed went up .2 the last 20 miles. What an experience.

Hoping for lots of safe miles for all of us this season.
