even though they are owned partly (or wholly) by McDonald's... Chipotle cracks me up [1]... I don't know whether to post this in the 'Food' or 'TV' forums, but alas, here it is... three new commercials by Chipotle to air only on PBS (AFAIK)...
..........Sign Language
..........News
..........Telethon

They're short; so even a "dial-upper" can enjoy...

[1] - in face and belly... as shown below...
..........face: laugh.gif (satisfied during a good laugh at their marketing)
..........belly: closedeyes.gif (satisfied after a good burrito, "cracks me up" refers to the loosening of the belt, obviously)

I'm still looking for my burrito soulmate.

My brother in law is a manager there. He is really hyped about the place, which may be expected.

Anyway, his latest plug for them is that they are being really progressive about thier food. 10% of their beans are now certified organic. They get their chicken from small 'free range' farms. (At least this is true of his Dublin, Ohio store. "Your mileage may vary.")

Plans in the future include moving their beef to a better way of growing it. (Not a meat eater, so I don't follow the meat thing much.) They want to increase the percentage of organic beans, with the goal being 100%. They are also doing something with the pigs. Again, not being a meat eater, I didn't catch the details.

With that being said, I really like Chipotle. It's almosty like making food at home, but with much less mess. cool.gif

Their free-range avocadoes are great. Avocadoes from restaurants who keep them locked up in cages (and only let out to go ot the bathroom) are hideously bad quality.

oh man. i'm getting hungry for a burrito and it's only 9am.

it's a wholly owned division of mickey d's (but, it sounds like a spin off may be coming to help finance and grow the mc donald's brand further). a huge company of it's own within a multi-national...

"Separately, in light of Chipotle Mexican Grill's strong performance and growing popularity, we plan to explore strategic alternatives to fuel growth at this emerging, fast-casual brand which currently operates more than 400 restaurants. We believe Chipotle's value and potential might be maximized through alternative strategies that could include raising additional equity capital in the public or private markets. This would have an additional benefit of enabling us to allocate more resources to growing sales and profits at existing McDonald's restaurants."

The ads are great, and Kudos to PBS for being able to mock themselves.

I'm a little caught in a few places, I must confess:

Owned by McDonalds -- Doesn't that make them the Devil by association?
Should I ignore the ownership since their product, unlike DQPCs, aren't killing us?
Isn't their food way too salty?

... and should I be upset that there are more and more commercials on PBS?

Please Apples ... please tell me how to think!

I have never eaten at a chipotles for a couple of reasons...
Firstly, it's a nation wide burrito chain. That's reason enough for me. why should I go somewhere that is national, when I can support one of the many, many, many kick ace taqueria and burrito joints we have in this city?
Secondly, they advertise - WTF?!?!? NONE of the burrito places I have been to that advertise (on TV that is) are decent. In fact, it has been the opposite experience. The best burrito places in this city are the ones that rely on location and word of mouth.
Third, and finally, they are owned by freaking McDonalds!!! Yeah, ok, even if I didn't boycott McDonalds...

Anyway, just my two cents.

Chipoltle began right down the street from me.

which means,

I am cooler that you are.

but dan is funnier than me. but not cooler and this proves it!!

Ok, I can seee why you would say that about two of my reasons...but the third one? My boycott of McDonalds is horrible?
Not mad, just sayin...
MyWaterMyWine
Aaron, your third point is valid. i stand corrected.

i stopped reading after the first two since they were SOOOOO horrible.

I am an equal opportunity burrito-buyer. No one place (in Cincinnati/Dayton) has the best burrito... Habanero has the best chips and olives, Comet has the best size and salsa and tofu, Kaldi's used to have the best tofu sad.gif, and IMO Chipotle has the best rice and guac... alas, I think back in calendar year 2004, I ate 180+ burritoes (no effin' lie)... most from Chipotle (yeah, they were right by where I was going for grad school two nights a week).

If Ohio had taquerias like Portland or SF does, I'd sponsor them more often. Alas, we don't. And the fact is that Habanero and Comet (the only decent Cinti-local burrito joints) are a bit further away. So, Chipotle gets hit a lot more often.

With regards to McD... well, at least Chipotle makes good food. McD's is atrociously bad for you, while Chipotle's is only mildly bad for you (portion sizes contribute mainly to the bad-ness). Chipotle uses fresher ingredients, and if you get a veggie bowl rather than the one wrapped in a tortilla, you can skate away with a 500-600 calorie meal (high, but not unruly for a dieter).

Anyone notice the hip musak they play at Chipolte?

I often hear Wilco, T-bone Burnett, Emmylou in the Chipotle's here in Austin....

And Peter Mulvey! Simply another big sign of Chipotle's hipness...

A Chipotle boycott is similar to an oxygen boycott, in my mind. Both rubbish.
