hey Trudes, thanks for the lyrics you've posted. lately I've been listening to Clap Hands a lot but haven't figured out all the words. it's so cryptic! any thoughts?

here's what I hear: (feel free to laugh at some of the weird things!)

sane, sane, they're all insane
fireman's blind and the collecter's lame ?
Cincinnati jacket and a sad luck dame ?
hangin' out the window with a bottleful of rain

clap hands

row, row, thunder in the road
son of bitch is never comin' back here no more
moon in the window and bird on the pole
always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal

clap hands

steam, steam, a hundred bad dreams
goin' out to Harlem with a pistol in his jeans
fifty dollar bill inside a paladin's hat ???
nobody showin' Mr. Knickerbocker's eye ???

shine, shine, a Roosevelt dime
all the way to Baltimore and running out of time
Salvation Army seemed to wind up in the hole
all went to heaven in a little rowboat

clap hands...

Bs...Are you signed on to Kim's blog? I just requested to be added to your friends and to subscribe to your blog. Also Shawn. Cool!

Yes Kim's lyrics are quite an enigma, but it's one of the things that I love about her stuff.

Re: Clap Hands, I am hearing what you hear except I hear:
"Nobody's sure where Mr Knickerbocker's at"

OK, it's not great English but it sound secretive and criminal to me, fitting in with the pistol in the jeans. tongue.gif

I am loving the Southgate show (thanks Bill and Shawn).
I'm drooling for the DVD which is coming soon. yay.
The duo of Kim and Josh is fantastic. I don't know which song I like best...
Bruise, Glove and SSB are right up there.
Really love Josh's percussion, too.

Shawn, were you able to record the KY show last weekend?
«°¤°»
"Clap Hands" is a Tom Waits song.

lyrics:
Sane, sane they're all insane
The fireman's blind, the conductors lame
A Cincinnati jacket and a sad luck dame
Hanging out the window with a bottle full of rain
Clap hands, Clap hands
Clap hands, Clap hands

Said roar, roar the thunder and the roar
Son of a bitch is never comin' back here no more
Moon in the window; a bird on the pole
Can always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal

Clap hands, Clap hands
Clap hands, Clap hands

Steam, steam a hundred bad dreams
Goin' up to Harlem with a pistol in his jeans
A fifty dollar bill inside in Palladin's hat
And nobody's sure where Mr. Knickerbocker's at

Repeat Second Verse

Shine, shine a Roosevelt dime
All the way to Baltimore and runnin' out of time
Salvation Army seemed to wind up in the hole
They all went to Heaven in the little row boat

Clap hands, Clap hands
Clap hands, Clap hands

oh, cool. thanks for the lyrics! I'm amused that I heard right about the paladin's hat, but I don't know why I couldn't hear "nobody's sure where Mr. Knickerbocker's at".

Trudy, thanks for adding me to your friends list! I added you back. I'm still new to myspace and don't really use it except to keep track of others (rather than be kept track of...lol).

anyway, back to talking about Kim...I saw she commented on your profile page, "i'm recording the new record in september so a release either at the tale end of this year or february of 2006?" sounds exciting!

I think Glove may be my favorite of the "new" ones, at least at the moment. I really like the poetry and the tune for that one--perfect evocation of a mood or some such. And the djembe works nicely!

I did record the show at The Loft, both audio and video. The audio will be another soundboard/audience matrix, but both sources came out a little below par (long, involved story, and mostly my own doing). Still, I think it will still be more than listenable. The video component should be excellent. Still trying to coax as much out of the audio as I can before I author the DVD, and then I have to come up with menus and art, so probably a week or so. I "titled" the Southgate DVD _Revelating In_ (Kim didn't seem to mind this), so I'm thinking of using _The Earth Unstable_ for this one (from near the beginning of "Glove")--what do you think?

At the show, Kim mentioned February for the next release. I've been thinking about a possible list of songs that might make it on this, and I'm pretty excited about it--lots of very good material. Here's a list of songs she's done that haven't appeared on SBSB or EP (in alphabetical order):

95 Things
Asleep
Bruise
Clap Hands
Glove
Heart and Your Soul
Hit Me
I Came To
I Feel Like a Fading Light
King of Me
Long is the Day (on the list for Southgate, but not performed)
More Than That
No War
The Star-Spangled Banner
Troubled Mind
When I Sleep
Who is Golden?
Wrong Way Bird (also on list but not performed)
You Can Rely on Me

Are there others that we know of? Not likely that all 18 will make the final cut, but I think it's an impressive list.
kylie jo
I can't stop listening to 'Bruise'. Her guitar playing in that song owns me. I don't know a lot of the words, tho. Trudes?? smile.gif
'Hit Me' is one of the coolest songs ever. And I love '95 things'. And 'Maggie' from the EP.

And I didn't know 'Clap Hands' was a Tom Waits song. Thanks, Dan. I love it tho. Especially when they use the djembe!

I think I'll stop in her coffee shop tomorrow. Iced coffee for one dolla(and 25 cents)!!! smile.gif
Trudes
Shawn,
I'm so glad you were successful. Your recordings have been a very nice quality and I know this show will be no exception.
I'm really looking forward to it.
As much as I enjoyed Josh's drumming in 'I Came To', I feel the dejmbe really fit better with 'Glove'.
I agree Kim seemed to be struggling to get what she wanted from the sound person. And I heard the crowd chatting during songs...that's sad...how distracting that must be for the artists.
Tell me, did the rooster ever get onstage?
Yes, I'm stoked for the new album.
That list is awesome.
There's a couple I haven't heard.
I am listening to 'My Funny Valentine Take 2' (MFV take2) 04:01 1886 KB MP3 audio file.
I downloaded it 05/16/05. I'm guess it must have been from Kim's website, but I don't remember.
It's very nice with very nice drumming as well.
Have you heard it?
ShawnF
Yes, the crowd was quite chatty, and this came through even just on the soundboard source (thus, through the onstage mics), which was unusual. I had the impression that most of the people there were primarily interested in Katie Reider.

I really had no idea what was up with the rooster stuff. I came through the front porch to get in (I think you have to), but I was pretty early to set up, and there was no rooster. I'm guessing that Kim went out there after her soundcheck and must have seen it then. Unless it's just some Southgate humor that I'm not understanding. It never appeared onstage, in any event (or it might have fowled up the show. Sorry!!)

Haven't heard her MFV--sounds interesting!

Kylie, if you do stop in, tell her we all said hi!
ShawnF
OK, I'll take a stab at the lyrics for Bruise. I've compared the York St. Café, Southgate, and Loft performances. The latter two are pretty much identical, but there are differences between those two and the earlier York St. I'll put the York St. version up first and let that be the baseline. I'll label the sections so I don't have to retype to show how it has changed.

---------------------
Bruise
w/m Kim Taylor
York St. Café 5/6/05

A1:
You can go now, honey,
Leave your shirt and money
See the rain is cloudin'
Sky is brewin', old town's stewin'

B1:
You are the evil black sheep,
You are the dirty bo-peep,
I heard the news
You are a bruise, girl, a bruise.

A2:
I remember--funny--
how they would torture you
blow below the belt
what could I do?

B2:
You're like an evil black sheep,
you're like the dirty bo-peep,
I heard the news
You are a bruise, girl, a bruise.

C:
How would it be if I come
And set your skin aflame?

A3:
You can go now, baby,
Leave your shit with me
You see the rain is comin'
Sky above

B3:
I am the evil black sheep,
I am the dirty bo-peep,
I am the news
I am a bruise, girl, a bruise.

C
["and" dropped both times]

vocables

----------------------

The Southgate and Loft performances have this structure:

A1

B1

C

A3

B3[first 2 lines]/B1[last two lines]

C
["flame" dropped first time @ Southgate]

vocables

--------------------

So it appears that she's dropped the entire second verse (A2 section), and the second B section has combined the original 3rd and 1st B sections (is this chorus or bridge?). The last choice is interesting, as we now shift from first person to second person abruptly. I think I prefer the original, or at least it's slightly less cryptic that way, but maybe that's not better. The change to first person in the 3rd B is kinda mitagated in the more recent version. For whatever that's worth! The elimination of the second verse may just be due to Kim feeling the song couldn't sustain that length, as it is fairly simple, musically. On the other hand, the end section with the vocables is now significantly longer than it was at York St., but it's done over both the verse and B chords now, which makes it more interesting.

Shawn, Your detailed analysis of the Bruise lyrics is exemplary.
I just wanna know....
what is she talkin' 'bout? blink.gif
ShawnF
Ah, well, that I can't say for sure and wouldn't want to try to interpret it publically. A lot of her songs seem to just suggest moods or images that, taken collectively, provide some sort of meaning, but not always in the narrative sense that we're used to. Or it could be that I'm just not getting them! 41 Dogs, for example, is one that I'd like explained to me. I assume it's a metaphor, but I'm not following. Maybe it's a literary reference I'm not catching.

But the vagueness is one of the things I like, actually, as it makes you work a little trying to understand. Not that much music (well, popular music, anyway) requests that you think anymore. Her lyrics remind me to a small degree of Jon Anderson's (Yes), though his are much more positive and spiritual and trippy, where Kim seems to dwell on melancholy, loss, and pain associated with relationships or with events that happen to characters (like in Maggie and, I think, Bruise). But the use of not-entirely-narrative images is similar, I think.
«°¤°»
"41 Dogs" is about how to make a batch of Korean Chili.

I agree. I think the uncertain is exciting and scary...and attractive.
Re: melancholy, loss and pain...
yeah, just stick a daggar in my heart and twist. It hurts so good.

On her album notes for SBSB, she references Maude, sadly passed on.
I suspect her songs 'The Drive', Heart and Your Soul' and '95 Things' are somewhat personal, as well.
How frequently beauty is born of pain.

I thought the first verse was this...(and I'm not attempting the rest of it)

You can go now honey
blah blah no idea
the rain is comin'
the sky is blue
in uptown Stueben(as in Ohio).

I'm probably totally wrong.

I just love it so much.
ShawnF
Well, I just relistened to the York St. version of the first verse, and I'm going to stick with what I had, except maybe the last line ends "old town stewin'" instead of "old town's stewin'"

Steuben as in Steubenville? Interesting, but I don't quite hear it that way. Not that what I think it is makes any more sense, really smile.gif

Did you see Kim today?
Trudes
I have to agree with Shawn...I have been listening to two versions, York St and Southgate with earbuds and with Sony Professional phones.
The shirt and money seems to fit...(I just couldn't get that part on my own.)
I think I'd go with 'old town's stewin' but I also thought of
'whole town's stewin'.

Funny--that was one of the hardest lines for me, and exactly because it's easy to hear either way, and both seem equally likely. I think the York St. finally made me lean towards "old" but it's impossible to tell from Southgate and the Loft versions.
Trudes
OK you guys...
Today I'm workin' on 'Glove' lyrics.
Help.
Trudes
This is a very rough draft.
Feel free to laugh at what I'm hearing.
The italicized is an alternate version depending on which show I listened to.

Glove

I’m an earthquake
I’m the earth unstable
Get the strongest
Get the longest cable
Gonna raise my son
To believe in love
Help me feel my fingers inside your glove
I’m gonna waste time
I’m gonna be uncertain
Gonna take down all the bedroom curtains

(Gonna raise my son to believe in love)
(Help me feel my fingers inside your glove)

(Gonna place my fingers inside your glove)
(Help me be my eyes
Gonna give more of me to love)

Gonna write you oh the longest letter
How the deep ache
Only makes us better

(Gonna raise my son to believe in love)
(Help me feel my fingers inside your glove)

(I’m gonna place my fingers inside your glove
Help me be my eyes
Gonna give more of me to love)

Kim's performance from The Loft is now up in the Vines section . . .
Trudes
I have been listening to the newest show (The Loft) and I want to mention that Kim's rendition of The Star Spangled Banner is alone worth signing up for this vine. Josh's drumming and Kim's beautiful voice make this a version like you've never heard.
Kim mentions that she dedicates it to not only recent deaths of local soldiers, but to all the people who have been f**ked up by this war.
I personally relate to the feel of this rendition in our current times. I hear a dark and ominous chant with a still-hopeful cry, rather than the proud version I am used to hearing.
Not intending this post to be political. Jus sayin'...
Thanks Kim.

ShawnF
Exactly!! I also get a sense that we've lost something. For me, the repetitions of "Oh say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave?" make it a question to be taken seriously, now, and the flag is perhaps a metaphor for truth, honor, virtue--something like that. Just interpreting, not politicizing. Much.

I think I have a pre-FM (meaning prior to compression for broadcast) copy secured from Brian O'D, pending Kim's approval to distribute it here.

Also, notice that Josh is no longer listed for the Taft show . . . There's going to be another guest (and maybe two) that Kim's going to have, though . . . Going to leave it vague in case Kim wants it to be a surprise. [had a nice first visit to Kim's coffeeshop last week with my girls--they liked the hot chocolate!]

I've worked on typing out the lyrics for Everything Ends, which is currently my favorite Kim song, but am having trouble with a few spots. can anyone help me out?
this is what I have so far from listening to three different recordings. variations from song to song are in brackets.

I'm gonna ride like the wind today
I'm gonna trample and vindicate
Me and the boys, we are resolute
We're takin' the reins, we are comin' through

Up through the rain I can hear it come
Off through the hills I can see 'em [a?] run
You move the mountains along the sea
[It's] a hell of a sight for the boys and me
When everything ends when the last whistle blows
I won't leave you alone
When everything ends when the last sinner goes
[or If everything ends yeah when everything goes]
I won't leave you alone

(ooooh...)

Sharp, oh, the knife that is cutting through
[But] tough, boy, the skin, baby, on me and you
Could we have known on [? sounds more like "or"] the final day
Could we have meant it'd [???] be hell to pay
When everything ends when the last sinner goes
[or If/When everything ends if/when the last whistle blows]
I won't leave you alone
If everything changes, if everything goes
I won't leave you alone

(ooooh....)

I'm gonna ride like the wind today
I'm gonna trample and vindicate
If everything ends, yeah, if everything goes
I won't leave you alone
[I won't leave you alone]

Could we have known ere the final day
Could we have mended the hell to pay

ere

I absolutely love this song too. Thanks for typing this out.

aaaah, that must be it! I had the feeling the words made more sense than I was getting out of them and that I just couldn't think of the right word combo. I kept hearing "mended" but that just confused me. thanks for the "ere"!

This is such a killer song! The following is what I think I hear, but historically what I think Kim is singing and what her lyrics actually turn out to be don't necessarily correspond all that well.

I'm gonna ride like the wind today
I'm gonna trample and vindicate
Me and the boys, we are resolute
We're takin' the reins, we are comin' through

(aaaah...)

Up through the rain I can hear it come

I won't leave you alone
When everything ends, when the last sinner goes
I won't leave you alone

(ooooh...)

Sharp, oh the knife that is cutting through
But tough, boy, the skin buried on me and you
Could we have known o'er the final day
Could we have mended the hell to pay
When everything ends, when the last sinner goes
I won't leave you alone
If everything changes, if everything goes
I won't leave you alone

(ooooh....)

I'm gonna ride like the wind today
I'm gonna trample and vindicate
If everything ends, yeah if everything goes
I won't leave you alone
I won't leave you alone

(it doesn't sound like "ere" to me on either version, although that would make more sense)

Yay Kim. I have loved that song since first listen last summer. Congrats!

good to hear some news about the upcoming album! on one of the recorded concerts she says that she has no idea when it will be out, which worried me.

after listening to Everything Ends again (and again and again) I can't hear "ere" either, but I it does make more sense... didn't even think about the possibility of the word "o'er"...interesting! "buried" makes more sense too, but I can't hear it.

I thought I'd update my list of favorite Kim songs.

I'll add "Marlene," which is on the Kent Stage recording, and she also did it at Bellville. Also, "Baby I Need You" that she did at Little Brother's and at Taft, though I don't know for certain if that's the title.

And I'm not certain if The Star-Spangled Banner is truly a cover since the music is original. Hmm . . .

I don't know if there is an "official" one until the cover art is made for the new album. She has introduced it both ways, though among the recordings I have, "95 Things" is the version given in a narrow majority (I think--I ceased to worry about this a few months back and haven't paid close attention lately).

I was listening to the WNKU recording and finally heard some of the lyrics to Who Is Golden more clearly. thought I'd type them out. feel free to make comments and corrections. I am not sure about the meaning of the song but I loved it since the first time I heard it.

who is golden
who is golden

here come the battle and the fallen
here come the fever and the haulin'

hey lonely souls ache
hey lonely souls ah...
hey lonely souls ache
