So a friend and fan did a lot of audio and video taping of gigs from 2005 and I'm lucky enough to have had him show up to my final show of last year's tour with Over the Rhine. This is the title track from the new record (coming out in August) and I hope you like it. Jimi Zhivago on the piano and D. Money on the drums. Thanks to Shawn Fenton. There's a few other videos in there too if you're interested but I like this one best. Sorry about the extra long link. You'll most likelyhave to copy and paste this address. Kim's letter to the email list:
Hello All You Hard Working People On A Wednesday Evening Round Supper
Time.
It's always so difficult for me to start these things. Hope that entry
worked allright.
It's been awhile since I've sent out any kind of nice introspective
word of wisdom to all you die hard fans and I've missed it.
Missed it missed it missed it. As I'm sure you've missed seeing me
blab on about nothing really.
So here's the real scoop for this reaching out . . .
Two things. One. If you live within a 20 miles radius of Cincinnati,
Ohio, I highly recommend you coming out to a little bar called
Allyn's Cafe on MONDAY JULY 3 for a special Fireworks Eve Songwriter
Night. We'll get it going at 9pm and there are several of us taking
long-winded
turns and I think that you are going to love them all. I'll be
beat-boxing the songs from the upcoming record. You don't wanna miss
that.
Here is the scoop on Allyn's: 3538 Columbia Pkwy, Cincinnati, 45226 -
(513) 871-5779
Now, the place is small. So how funny would it be if a ton of you came
and packed the joint sardine-like. On a Monday? I mean how much fun?
Thing Two. If you live anywhere on the planet, you'll be able to
pre-order the new record I Feel Like A Fading Light starting in the
month of August.
There will be signatures. And photos. And printed lyrics. And candy.
And pantyhose.
And that is all of the things I have to say for now!!
I'm so glad you're here. (like Steve from Blues Clues. Steve was so
much better than Joe. )
I am really glad you're here. And I'm really glad I'm here, too.
We're really very lucky.

The tracklist is interesting--I wasn't expecting to not know any of these, but Tracks 2, 10, and 11 are new to me, as far as I know. "The Room Here Above" sounds familiar, though--have to think through her lyrics, as maybe I do know that one . . . And "Hit Me" is absent (which surprises me, at least). I'm excited for Kim!

Well, unless there has been significant additional recording since last fall, it's just Kim and Josh Seurkamp. I believe Jimi Zhivago might add a little bit also, but I think the concept was to be Kim and drummer. I like that approach just fine, personally, though I still do pull out the Schuba's and the York St. Cafe live recordings quite often to hear her with the band. Even on the York St. recording, though, Ric sits out "Hit Me" so it's not quite what you're envisioning (enaudiating?), but yeah, I can hear that, too.
Oh--the other one I was expecting to make an appearance was "Heart and Your Soul" . . . I really like that one, too. But I'm quite curious to hear the ones that are new.

I am recording at Madison--I'll likely be hard to miss during Kim's set. Don't know for certain about Southgate, yet. I may talk to Kim and try to get a feel for just how much she's actually going to be doing there. And I haven't been in the Parlour before, so I'll have to see. Probably.

Aug 10 2006, 07:12 AM
Re: Southgate...
The Parlour is small... skinny and low ceiling... it's a three person show (Todd Lipscomb, Kim Taylor, Wil Cope) for $5. Kim's listed as the 2nd on the bill... don't know if that's truly the order. Most of the time, there's no soundboard (I think), or maybe just a PA with a mic and the guitars are just "
au natural"...
My brother might be coming to the Madison Theater Kim Taylor/Noctaluca show... $10 with free CD (of a kickass band) ain't a bad deal.

After the technical difficulties in
Kim's 1st (or 2nd) song, she put on a great short set. I love her songs. I do miss Josh Seurkamp and Ric Hordinski a bunch (
I don't miss Amos. Amos can go suck an ox.). I think I miss Josh the most, but the new drummer is good... Josh's just phenomenal (and it's hard to compete with phenomenal). I'm looking forward to Kim's album. I saw ShawnF, but he seemed to skuttle off into the backstage area after Kim's set. Saw no one else I knew (
other than the performers)...
Noctaluca put on a
GREAT show. I haven't seen them in over a year, and I only knew 3 or 4 songs -- one of Jason Ludwig's ("Sister Mary Joseph" from
PeLL MeLL), "Monkey Moon" (from their sampler 2+ years ago), "Suck Hard" and "Let Me Down" (from
MySpace). Regardless of my knowledge of their new material, they played close to an hour and half and
didn't disappoint me.
Great live show. I'm bummed that I'll miss them at MidPoint Music Fest... but alas, I think they're competing with Tool or Sufjan Stevens for my ears that night.

Well, I skuttled my gear off, anyway, though I only stayed for the first couple of Noctaluca's tunes. It was Kim's first song in which the guitar went suddenly silent, but things went reasonably well after that, and there were a couple of gems, too. "Midnight Sun" is progressing quite nicely, I think--definitely has developed a bit since the Alchemize show. "Troubled Mind" and "Fading Light" were quite good, too, and I really like "Greatest Story Ever Told." Dan notwithstanding, I'm not sure the crowd was a great fit for Kim, overall--pretty chatty throughout her set.
Regarding "Hit Me" not being on the album--I have it second-hand that it came down to that one or "Bruise" to include, and that she felt "Bruise" was a better fit with the rest of the album. That's a good choice, too

i really enjoy kim's work, love her music and like her a lot personally. but, i really wish she would start playing longer sets, her shows are always
very short even as for an opener and only seem to be around an hour or so (some have been shorter) when she's a headliner, i think one i went to was only about 45 minutes long. i love her music and i'd love to support her but, i just can't justify the drive for the legnth of set she plays. hopefully with the new record, new material, etc she'll start playing longer, full sets.
